Seeing that there is an airport in Nice, why not have it there? (red is the main track/pit road, green are alt. layouts).
But how fans get there is another story

That's a bit more believable. It's not a major airport is it? If they shut it down in Cleveland (I think that was an active airport?) they can shut it down in Nice...

Seeing that you are not here in America, let me tell you about Cleveland.
The main airport in Cleveland is Cleveland Hopkins, 9 miles (14 km) from city center.
Burke Lakefront Airport, right off Lake Erie, was a reliever to Cleveland Hopkins. Burke was the venue for the GP of Cleveland. No main passenger flights come in/out of Burke anymore, although there are flight schools and small cargo planes that are active at BKL/Burke. The Cleveland airshow (in 3 weeks) is held there annually.
Technically except the last years of the GP at Burke, it was an active airport.
Since Nice is bigger than Cleveland, and doesn't have a 2nd major airport where for example DHL planes and European commercial flights to land, it would be a massive hassle.
On the other hand.......
Getting back on topic, Addison, Texas hosted a trans-am event in 1990 (i'm not sure if there were any more, i've only seen 1990). The track was part of an airport and the streets of the town.
I posted this on the unusual race tracks thread, and planes may have landed during the race ( I don't remember as it has been a year since i watched the broadcast).
I just can't see bernie allowing a random Czech Airline plane land in the middle of lap 12 of the French GP.

If a driver can time it right, they get a helpful tailwind when the plane uses the engine braking.

If a track has to be close to people for anyone to attend, then the problem is not with the track.

Out of use airports do seem like pretty good potential venues... always love the immense width that permits a magnitude of different lines.

Off topic. I think a great track requires a track that makes best use of the location to provide a technically and physically challenging circuit. Austin wasted the opportunity with regards to the uphill section. Should have been a med-high speed sweeping left hand corner that rose and fell. That would have been something. But
While your track looks nice but whats the topography of the land? You just plonked it in somewhere.

I like a track that feels like you are going somewhere - a circuit like Spa you feel a long way from the pit lane when you are at the far end of the circuit, even at a smaller track like Oulton Park the hairpin seems a long way from home. Most airfield circuits lack this, you can usually see the pit buildings the whole way round and you never really feel like you have gone anywhere.

I don't think location is too important when designing an F1 track. The tracks(generally) are hostage to the regulations. Hungaroring, used to be called a boring f1 venue, but the last 4 races have been top class. Then compare that to the Russian GP last year which should've suited these cars, and look what happened.

Say there was no track at Suzuka today, would Tilke/FIA come out with that brilliant track? Nope.
A flat track could never match something like Spa, Suzuka. Elevation changes are a must for a exciting track. But then you would say racing at Hungary/Hockenheim was top class, so was was it at Spa/Suzuka. Can't sell you Spa and Suzuka, can I?
