Hey All

I was asked a question the other day and I was wondering on what other members of TNF would make of this question.

"Back in '39, the championship is one was never completed and is still to this day one who is the champion based on the points system and the fact that the season was never finished because of WW2 and so on, ('39 thread and points that go with it have been noted in many other threads which is not real point of the question)

But what would happen if for example a F1 season was half way though a championship and it came to a sudden hold because of what ever reason... who would be the champion that would go do in history or will it be an unfinished championship with no champion to claim the title."

Is there a rule(s) governing the championship should this ever come to pass ? or has it never been considered ?

Back in the day the'championship' was of far less importance? Maybe someone has 'Bernies rule book' to discover what should happen if the season had to be suddenly terminated? Last similar senario I guess was in 1955 when 4 races out of 10 scheduled were cancelled-

This sort of question always reminds me of the joke "If my Aunt had balls she'd be my Uncle!"

There are so many possible regulations that could govern the outcome as to render this sort of thread moot.

1957, surely? Pescara was added to the championship because the regulations said there had to be a minimum of eight races that year. And at times I think there were rapid recalculations and rearrangements in the days when the championship was 'best X scores from Y races' and the even more complicated 'best X scores from Y races in part 1 of the season plus best X scores from Y races in part 2', when mid-season races could find themselves switched from part 1 to part 2 or vice versa in order to balance it out after a cancellation or two.

There's probably some sort of force majeure rule within the current regulations though. Given the squillions of dollars that ride on it I can't believe that Bernie wouldn't cover his arse against that sort of thing.

Probably best declare whoever was leading in both points tables [WDC & WCC] to be the champions.

I don't suppose, prior to 1970, that any thought was given to who would be WDC should the points leader be unable to complete the season....fortunately, Rindt's tally wasn't beaten and he was declared WDC that year....

Jackie Stewart in "Faster!" mentioned that someone had proposed the champion had to be alive.  Said the thought made him sick.  The idea obviously went nowhere.

As for the original question, rule 6.1 of the FIA Sporting Regulations for F1 this year states that "the Formula One World Championship driver's title will be awarded to the driver who has scored the highest number of points, taking into consideration all the results obtained during the Events which have actually taken place".  So if every "Event" remaining were cancelled tomorrow, Hamilton would be the legit world champion.

Thanks Ensign, that is the answer I was looking for. So at least the FIA has thought of this possible repeat of history.

On a funny note it would be quite funny if only 1 or 2 events were ever completed out of 19 events, it would go down in history as a very short season.

I have just read the rules that are noted in the section 6, it is quite clear about unfinished seasons, races that are not finished with less than 2 laps completed and so on.

So it really is good thing that we will never have a repeat of 1939.

My God! I would certainly HOPE that we would never have a repeat of the events of 1939!!!
