Overshadows what had been a stunning race up to that point.

Best wishes, Justin. We're all thinking of you.

Let's keep in mind it's entirely your own decision as to whether you want to watch the crash.

Worth noting that the Pocono facility is fairly remote, it would be quicker to airlift him than drive.

Thoughts and prayers for Justin right now. Hope he's okay.

Hope there's nothing too serious for Sage, either.

UPDATE (7:19 p.m.): According to Brant James of USA TODAY Sports, winner of the ABC Supply 500 Ryan Hunter-Reay was told Justin Wilson is unconscious and unresponsive.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does "unresponsive" mean in this context?

:(

I don't like how ambiguous that is. Was he told that in victory lane or recently?

He was likely told that over the radio during the caution. Patient privacy laws will prevent any further information release until his family reaches the hospital (they're flying in from Colorado).

Usually it means unresponsive to various stimuli. Even when unconscious, we will often react involuntarily.

So it's going to be quiet for the next few hours?

Looks really bad. I understand the lack of info at this time, and I'm hoping for better news in the morning. Justin may not be one of the young stars of IndyCar, but he is a class act and a fine racer. His career is a story of perseverance and love for the sport. Hope we get to see him on the grid again real soon.

That and head injuries are complex to diagnose. He's in good hands though - Lehigh Valley is a well-equipped hospital, and the Indycar medical team led by Dr Trammel are the best in the business.

From everything I have heard (unofficially), he needs a miracle :( Sad day for the whole racing industry.

Another board is saying Sage Karam has sustained fractures in both legs too.

That was a horrific accident.

Unofficial sources, rumours and speculation do not help anyone. They only make people worry more.

The waiting part after a serious accident is one of the worst things about being a racing fan, but please, let's wait for something official before making dramatic statements.

While this is no doubt very serious, I have every hope that he will make a recovery, until we are told otherwise. I remember with the Massa situation in 2009, that was considered a life threatening injury at one point.

All we can do is to be positive and to hope for some good news. But things like this majorly suck. I hate it.

Too early to be writing him off, considering Cristiano da Matta took a live deer to the head (and lived) I'm not predicting doom just yet. Bianchi and Schumacher hit significantly heavier objects (a recovery vehicle and solid mountain rock).

Reading on twitter from multiple sources that Tony Stewart has lent his plane to Wilson's family to get them to the hospital. He's a cool guy.

Not good news, but it could've been even worse.  It was highly unlikely that he would not be in a coma immediately after such a blow to his head.  At least there doesn't appear to be bleeding in the brain.

Apart from Cristiano da Matta, both Roberto Guerrero and Karl Wendlinger raced again after significant head injuries. Fabrizio Barbazza ended his career, but has built himself a good life in Cuba.

Dont' give up hope, guys!

I assume that if he had bleeding in the brain, he would've been in surgery long before 9 pm.

Justin is a great driver. I wish him all the best.

I am convinced it is time for fighter pilot styles cockpits, too many people have died or been severely injured by debris, tractors on track and catch fences.

I love open wheel cars, but I love the drivers more.

How many exactly? I count Surtees, Massa, Hinchliffe and now Wilson. AFAIK there have been none such type of accidents in the history of World Series by Renault, Formula Nippon, GP2 or Formula 3. We shouldn't exaggerate the problem as if every years there are dozens of casualties due to open cockpit.

Pardon for drifting more toward the land of the offtopic: there are exactly zero racing cars in the world that have drivers positioned roughly the same height as F1 cars have, that would've saved Bianchi that rainy day. Specifically, a fighter pilot style canopy (even one capable of redirecting a runaway wheel) wouldn't even have made an obvious difference to the after-impact motion of the truck he collided with. Please do not use this freak accident to further any of your agenda. (The aforementioned may apply to Dan Wheldon's case as well, but I know not enough details to make more claims on that.)

Maria de Villota

Jules Bianchi

Every year there weren't dozens of casualties due to lack of HANS, but they still mandated it eventually.
