Did we ever had a driver who was leading the whole season but was beaten to championship in the last race?

I don't know, but I remember Vettel *not* leading the whole of the 2010 WDC, but taking the title in the last race. That's the other way around.

Troy Ruttman led the entire 1952 AAA national championship season before being pipped at the final race. However, he actually missed the entire second half of the season with an arm injury caused on the pace lap of a sprint car race, yet still nearly clung on to win the title. It helped of course that in those days the championship points were awarded in proportion to the length of the races, so his Indy 500 win was worth 5 times more than most other races on the trail.
