Amid the new fangled chase and other gimmicks, a weekend for history buffs at Darlington. The race is back on its traditional labor day weekend date after a hiatus in Atlanta. New fans won't recognize most of the cars are throwback paint schemes from various eras (Allison Miller High LIfe, K. Petty Mello Yello, etc). And Ken Squier and the Jarretts broadcasting part of the telecast.
I'm sorry what?

Why are JJ Yeley and Cassill ineligible for points?

Read somewhere that there's a low downforce package for this race, which has already been received positively by drivers in practice. Seeing as there's no IndyCar for the rest of the year, I might consider tuning in for this one. Some of the retro liveries look really nice.

Nascar has a system where in the top 3 series (Sprint,Xfinity, and Trucks) you can only run for points in 1 of those 3 series, Yeley and Cassil are running for Xfinity points

Thanks to the folks over at reddit, here is a gallery of the retro liveries http://imgur.com/a/r2nIl
I like the idea !
Kyle Larson has been getting a little carried away with it all though, as you'll see from the gallery he's running the mello yello scheme as used by Kyle Petty...
Here's the two of them together :
for reference, here's petty 20-some years ago:

NASCAR does a great job at promoting its heritage, so it seems.

I want Larson to wear that mullet wig for the entire weekend including during the actual race

I wish the fans would put away some of their "heritage" getting tired of the increased number of confederate flags since charleston.

If you missed the prerace shows, you really missed out. Awesome stuff there seeing all the legends, cars, and stories. Even if the race stinks, it was already a worthwhile broadcast

Shame we can't throwback to the days when Darlington was exciting.

But note that squier even at his age makes an effort to make it sound interesting, Some of the recent years announcers make a checkered flag call as exciting as someone doing yard work.
Do agree that nascar does a good job recognizing history, more on the end of baseball in the US (which puts a high value on it) than other sports.
Wish they would make the gordon 3M scheme something of the past....

The lady meets the Lady.
Sorry. (I could have said, "The lady kisses the Lady.")
Hornish into the wall, too. Black seems to be the wrong color to have here--maybe the Lady is jealous. It is unlucky to wear her color.

New record for cautions--18.

On the restart, the announcer was saying "three wide," when it could be seen that nobody was three-wide.

The worst thing you can do to a redneck is to ask him not to do something.

Pretty good race despite it taking forever. They need to keep this aero package. Every time its been used its been good and the drivers overwhelmingly support it. I know NASCAR has said they don't plan on using it any more this year but they need to. Sure, it'll complicate things for the teams giving them such short notice but its not like NASCAR has ever taken that into consideration with their whims. And this whim would actually be positive for the first time in awhile.
The worst thing you can do to a redneck is to ask him not to do something.
So true. The worst thing NASCAR did was saying something about it. They distanced themselves from the flag years ago and its presence had died down considerably. You'd still see a couple sure, but not like it was. Now, sadly, its more than ever

I like this low downforce package a lot.
Me too, it made the cars less Formula One and challenged the driver's skills.
geez, it was a long race, and geez, it had a heck of a lot of cautions. But that forced the teams to juggle the tires because there were more cautions than tire sets available.

I understand that the guy driving the pace car ended the night with Mello Yello fever.
Hendricks must be waiting for The Chase before it reveals its secret weapon for 2015. Jeez Louise!
Anyway, that was a terrific scrap for the lead over the final laps.

Race is on. Now if only we can bring Indycar to Darlington......
That would be a wreckfest that makes Richmond 2008 (with its 100 laps of caution for accidents) look tame by comparison.

Indycar at darlington would be insane as Maldonato at a Demolition Derby........
