My reading of that is that one of the Red Bull reserves has the number, so Buemi or da Costa has it in case they need to sub for the main guys.

For those of you with a penchant for numbers, we can confirm that RSI will be #53@AlexanderRossi says his 1st choice of number was 16, but he was told it was a Red Bull reserve number. But 53 "will make a cool logo"
I've never heard of a team reserve number before.
Reserve drivers have also numbers, for example: Wolff #41, Wehrlein #23, Marciello #36, Palmer #30.
Whats a bit funny, which makes me wondering if it was really important that it is a RB reserve number: Rossi himself drove last year different numbers in practice. In Canada #45 (Caterham) and in Belgium #42 (Manor). Maybe the teams are really choosing a reserve number which is only for them in case a driver has to be replaced.

Proves driver numbers was a ridiculous idea. An actual race driver can't have a number that is meaningful to him because a seat already has the number, but the seat won't be occupied.
I must admit i thought it would take a few more years before there was an example of this.

A bit childish if you ask me. Give the guy number 16 if he wants it.

They've been doing it this way for decades in Cup. The numbers are assigned and reserved (though technically to teams and not drivers). If you come along and it's not available, it's not available. For example Jr was the 8 for years. When he went to Hendrick the 8 wasn't going to be available to him so they chose the 88. It's way more of an impact on someone like Jr where swag sales outstrip anyone in the F1 paddock (including that saggy pants blonde haired kid...) and the number is the personal extension of the driver. So 16 wasn't available an now he's 53.

Well, it does seem somewhat fair. Merhi hasn't exactly delivered "the good" thus far, at least if you compare him with his team mate...

Surprisingly, I didn't see this posted...

Have to admit I haven't followed the Mehri - Stevens battle. How does that time compare with Mehri vs Stevens?
Oh, and what abbreviation did they end up using for Rossi?

If you look at the European races onward, that's closer than Mehri ever got to Stevens (in terms of raw difference in seconds as well as percent difference).

Rossi back on track with 20 minutes left in FP2. I thought he was only running FP1?

STE went off 10 minutes in, dont think he has returned to the track since.
And you really didnt know Rossi was doing the entire weekend of 5 races until the end of the season (missing Russia and Abu Dhabi for GP2)?

I knew that bit, but I read somewhere earlier that he was only doing FP1 this weekend. So?
So then, STE had almost as much running as RSI then. RSI 3.2s quicker.

Stevens, only one flying lap on soft at the start of the session. Rossi, 3-4 fast laps on super softs at the end of the session. Apples and oranges really.

But that's different init - and has spawned a whole terminology "The 42 car was really good today, i had time to munch a burger during the yellows" might be something a chubby Columbian might have said. You drive a number, you don't have a number.
As you say when a driver moves, he can't take his number with him. Whereas the F1 model is precisely that the driver "owns" the number. So, here we have a driver not in the series owning a number and preventing a driver in the series from having it. I don't think there is a NASCAR equivalent? I guess the closest would be Chip Ganassi pulling out after the first race leaving Kyle Larson trying to find another drive and having to ditch his u-haul full of caps.

RSI with the quickest Manor lap of the weekend in FP3.
Didn't see Fp3, but 3.3 secs on your teammate seems more than just driver difference?

Yep. Probably. But then again, it's significantly quicker than FP1. Was there a problem then? Serious question. If there was a problem specific to Stevens's car in FP1 or FP3, I haven't heard of it. Maybe someone else knows. They both ran a good number of laps. I don't know why Rossi has set the quickest lap so far. I only know that he has.

Its possible his backers have bought manor some or a lot of new running gear to make that much off a difference to se what he can really do in a car

Good effort today.
He found the limit yesterday.
Just bring 'er home tomorrow.
Baby steps this weekend.
Silly Season thread mentioned that Eddie Jordan has thrown the rumor about Manor, Mercedes, Wehrlein, and Rossi in '17. Anybody else hear that?
