Didn't Coulthard overtake Barrichello for P1 after the safety car in Brazil 2003?

I can only find clips of their battle later in the race on YouTube, but StatsF1 does show Coulthard leading the lap after the safety car came in.

2002 Australian GP IIRC.

This was quite the amusing situation; Coulthard led Schumacher and Montoya as the safety car pulled away. Then Coulthard outbraked himself and ended up in the grass, and Montoya sped past Schumacher into turn 1.

Third to first for Montoya, I guess.

It is quite rare though, isn't it?

The fact that two of those restarts involve JPM should tell you something ;)

All these current restarts are entirely predicatable...leader creates huge gap to safety car, stacks the field a bit, and then accelerates at a point several corners previous to the S/F line.. Not sure why there isn't more rigorous rules or enforcement regaurding maintaining minimun gaps to the safety car until the moment it exits the circuit.

Once the safety car is said to be coming in, the leader in effect becomes the safety car. Always been the same, always will be. No reason to change it.

There is nothing more frustrating than seeing your favourite driver being caught napping on restart. Yelling at the screen 'Why didn't you close up!'

From what I remember (and backed up by P123's post) Montoya was very good at restarts coming from racing in the US. He'd be on the gearbox and alive as the track went green.

Glad it's like this. Safety car already erases any lead a driver has worked to build. It would be even less fair if the restarts were designed to give the person behind a better opportunity to get by.

EDIT: Actually I think I misread your comment.

Schumacher passed Barrichello for the lead at Indianapolis in 2004. If I remember rightly, tey crossed the line 0.000s apart.
