Looks pretty certain that Renault will buy the Lotus team now. They waited for all the media to leave Singapore and announced Maldonado in the middle of the night so the press couldn't ask any questions until they get to Suzuka... But PDVSA will advance the team next years dosh and this will help put the cogs in motion for the handover.

However, if they're happy to keep Maldonado and Merc engines for 2016, with a focus on 2017... No cars will have Renault engines in 2016.

Could Renault 'withdraw' next year, and then return and have all the benefits of being a 'new' engine manufacturer? How long do you have to have been away from the sport to qualify for this?

Probably this is one of the things the FIA will make up as they go. They probably haven't even considered such a possibility!

Then again... are engines homologated for a season or for the whole time the regulations are valid?

They're trying to get a share of the historic bonus that Ferrari and McLaren get, would Bernie let them have the money if they didn't compete?

There are different stages of homologation, with more parts becoming completely locked in over time.

The in-season development is a 2015-anomaly. For more information, see: http://www.f1fanatic...ine-rules-2015/
