Mclaren is a tough school.  Ask Nick Heidfeld - he was brought right through the junior ranks by them and never got a Mclaren race seat at all.  And he was better than Magnussen.

One of the great injustices of the last few decades in F1...

My point was really that Kevin was discarded too quickly. At least with RedBull they give you a couple seasons in a TR against a rookie of similar experience before kicking you out.

Scott Speed, Luizzi,Bourdais are three that come to mind.

They all had 1 season or less to prove themselves.

Eh?

Liuzzi drove two seasons for TR
Speed quit TR
Bourdais got 18 months before being dropped as he was way out his depth

Bourdais was far from out of his depth. He had enough ability to make a success of that time at Toro Rosso. In 2008 he was one lap away from third place at Spa, and similarly close to fourth in Melbourne, he was so unbelievably unlucky while Vettel just took off mid-season and was flying. Had he managed to start properly from his fourth on the grid at Monza, too.....

By 2009 he was absolutely beat and wanted to be anywhere but F1 I think. His 18 months in F1 were littered with missed opportunities, lots through zero fault of his own.

Thinking back, what really great drivers needed more than a season to prove themselves?

Nigel Mansell, Niki Lauda, Alan Jones, Mika Häkkinen (arguably, Herbert looked as good as he did in 1992), etc.
