Basically, if it falls apart like this as soon as Renault stop subsidising it, it probably wasn't really that brilliant.

Not really. GP2 & GP3 are both also struggling to fill the grid.

With the all new F2 next season, you've got to either mental or in a YD programme to be raving in either to year. Sadly for WSBR, Renault left at literally the worst possible time.

GP3 managed to increase its numbers (by allowing 4 cars per team), although I can't see that lasting too long.

Since F3 had a bit of a resurgence, series like FR3.5 and GP3 which are essentially at the same level as F3 have taken a hit. And with both series being a bit more, I can see why entries are moving away.

Still a much better looking car than the GP2/GP3 machines. Dallara really does hit and miss when building a race car.

European F3 has declined in numbers this year. There were 21 at Paul Ricard vs 35-36 last year. Euroformula Open is about the same.

Any particular reason F3 has dropped by so many cars this year?!

Prema dominance, costs, general shift in the market (more young drivers looking at tintops or other non-F1 routes). Then again F3 has generally been a route into DTM in recent years anyway (or Indy Lights in the case of Felix Rosenqvist).

What also doesn't help are the new rules (which in my opinion are good) that you can't participate in the series longer than 3 year. And you can't make the step from karting straight to F3, which again also is a good rule but it does mean that other series will benefit.

Regarding the 3.5, there aren't much gains to participate in this championship other than it's probably cheaper than GP2. I don't think this series can stand without FIA licensing or a manufacture.

All feeder series are subsidised by someone, if not by a big manufacturer then by the hordes of paydrivers.

This championship helped graduate the likes of Vettel, Kubica, Alonso (in a much earlier guise as "EuroOpen by Nissan"), Ricciardo, Vandoorne, Kovalainen, Bianchi, etc etc. It's been consistently one of the most important career alternatives for F1-hopeful drivers for roughly the past 15 years. It was also always highly entertaining. I think that's a very harsh dismissal of this championship's contribution to motorsport.

Not to the extent of this one.  It was part of the whole Renault package including FR 2.0 and some other series like Megane based specials and such like.  The tickets for those meeting were free.  On our way to the Spa Classic last year, we were offered free tickets in a Belgian petrol station.  The whole thing was bankrolled by Renault, and now that cash is going into F1.

F3.5 same level as F3?... I guess you don't mean performance wise.
