That was last year, Merc have scrapped that imo. Only way they will do this is if a driver is out of position.
Nah that was never scrapped. The driver behind can always choose the contra strategy.

I was reminded of Aguri Suzuki's 1995 crash in the Esses. Suzuka seems to produce this type of error that would be unusual to see elsewhere.
And Suzuki broke a vertebrae in his neck during that crash and could not start the race. Long live the HANS system, if ever was needed one, again.

Wouldn't it be so much better if the track was asphalted all the way around so that people could never make mistakes like this?

The weather looks interesting for tomorrow, there's a lot of rain around pre-race with a chance of some rain falling around the start of the race itself. In any case, its likely it will be wet to begin with and then gradually drying out.

Not that I want asphalt around the whole track, but are you saying it's a good thing that Kvyat had a massive crash and ruined the final part of qualifying?Wouldn't it be so much better if the track was asphalted all the way around so that people could never make mistakes like this?

so the question is, can VES and KVY outsmart the competition from the back (with slicks, while frontrunners hopefully will have to start with inters...).

Everyone will move up

I think grid spot is left empty only if driver is unable to start after the grid has been finalized (i.e. if they failed to leva pit lane or crashed during instalation lap).

I think some series had a red flag late in the qualifying and the race control allowed all cars that were on track one more attempt. That would be a common sense solution for that kind of incidents.

It's a tradeoff - I'd rather lose the end of qualifying than lose the increasingly unique challenge of Suzuka. Not that I want asphalt around the whole track, but are you saying it's a good thing that Kvyat had a massive crash and ruined the final part of qualifying?

Unfortunately.

No I was just messing around not trying to make a particular point really.
I think overall it's a good thing there is a natural deterrent to going off-track, although ideally you'd want more runoff, as the problem with Suzuka that makes it so dangerous, isn't so much that everything's grass, it's more that the walls are so close once you you've gone into the grass.
Posted 26 September 2015 - 12:59

Thats ridiculous...
I think Kvyat should also get a 3-place grid penalty, because he stopped parts of his car on the racing line in a potentially dangerous position.
He should start from 130R because the wheel tethers on his car were not up to the job.
Posted 26 September 2015 - 13:18
I glad Kvyat is OK, but I'm annoyed he ruined Lewis' pole lap
Why not be annoyed at Lewis not getting the job done on the first run instead? There was absolutely no guarantee it would be his 'pole lap'. Get over it.
Posted 26 September 2015 - 13:44
Was a massive shunt for Kvyat, relieved he hoped out and was more concerned with the fact he made a "rookie" mistaks rather than being in pain.
That said, this is what makes Suzuka increasingly unique, the tried and tested formula of "setting a banker" then going all out for the final lap means something very different on a circuit like Suzuka, as not only do you risk a compromise in your final banzai lap but also it's so risky to hang it all out for maximum attack.
We used to seeing Q3 times that exceed anything achieved in the free practise sessions or Q1 and Q2 because of a steady ramp up of engine modes, but a track like Suzuka adds that extra factor where you can't risk to drive at 10/10ths until Q3 because an off like Kvyat's today will result in you missing sessions!
Great track, seeing Hamilton behind Rosberg has been rare this year - and I look forward to the dynamic between them both, though my money is on Lewis jumping Nico at the start.

Does that series have cheese tyres too? An extra attempt will help nobody as the tyres wont be at their peak anymore.

a renault powered car gets it's wheels on the grass on the left hand side and and then
Holy Moly

that's not just circumstances. That would never have happened with Mercedes / Ferrari / British Leyland power under the bonnet .

Why do Herbert, Davidson and Anchorman constantly look like they're about to descend into a fit of giggles like a bunch of schoolboys who've stuck a picture of a willy to the teachers back?!
Because they are British.

You've read the reason, right? He was heading towards left, then for some reason turned right, and ended up blocking the whole line, instead of stopping on the grass on the inside, and maybe not effectively stopping the rest of the qual.

More a Schumacher.

If nothing else Kvyat gave us a very entertaining Q, both with his driving and his somewhat dramatic stoppage of the session. Glad he was okay, it looked very bad for a moment.

It would be sad if Suzuka gets paved run-off there.

Mercedes leading again as expected, but Ferrari has made gains. I did a graph of the difference in percentage of pole lap between Hamilton and Vettel and added linear / logarithmic trend lines. As you can see, in both cases trend lines point to smaller difference...hopefully by the end of the year they will be at the same level

I kinda like Lewis starting 2nd. Hes a guy that will go for the win and most of the time is fast enough to pass for it.

He doesn't pass for the win any more than any other drivers do.

No question in my mind that corners are a major cause of accidents.
We need tracks with only straight lines, and a speed limit.

He passed Rosberg for the win at this very track one year ago. It was wet last year though which probably helped. Passing Rosberg in the dry will be a much harder task (unless he gets a better start and is ahead of him anyway))
