The biannual Bay to Birwood Classic for cars 56-78  happened today. Weather was perfect. And it went quite smoothly . At least for me! The route was the same used last year for the older cars. Closer to the traditional route used for decades. Unlike the debacle of 2 years ago where it went down the freeway and through the Onkaparinga Valley Rd which was a parking lot for some hours!

A full entry of about 1750 cars which had cars from the sublime to rediculous as well as very rare. Featured where Goggomobiles! MGAs and a raft of early Falcons. Many which were not Falcons!

I have taken a whole pile of pics. The morning sun was not kind too many so some will look washed out.

Hopefully some others took some too. Linton?

78 VB Commodore

A40 Farina

Grunter Wagon.

Slow Belvedere.

Edit, ooops the pics loaded in opposite order to what I have listed. Operator error!

Is pic no 6, the wagon with the GT badge on the grille, a Hillman Hunter wagon? Looks very much like a Hunter from the front view. I owned a sedan back in the day (pos), but never realised they may have made a wagon, if that's what it is!?

Yes, Grunter wagon. Not all that common but hardly uncommon. The GT badge,, well it is not!

I did sell him the wheels though, give customers some exposure!

Not so long ago those things were written off when the thermostat housing corroded out. Like most older cars they now have some value.

MGA was a featured marque. There was quite a few. I feel all the std colors plus a couple. While I have heard of MGA twin cams this is the first one I have ever seen up close. Last twin cam car I saw had a Holden engine in it!016.jpg089.jpg017.jpg

Thanks Lee, never realised that they made a Hunter wagon back then! They were all rubbish anyway.

The Volkswagen Australia Country Buggy was a local product. It was only made for a short time. But I think it ended up getting made in Asia for a while.

I went to the Angas Creek Road junction, about a kilometre from Birdwood.

The traffic jams, as they waited to get into the town, were quite long at times.

Most of the cars were a bit "modern" for my liking.....I prefer the oldies.

I must adjust my spot focus more precisely.....in dappled light, the bright part of the car wins the auto-focus battle at f9.

For the benefit of overseas readers...

Morris Major Elite, from either 1961 or 1962 to about 1964, the extended front and rear panels were 'updates' grafted onto the Wolseley 1500/Austin Lancer/Morris Major body which came up to '59, Majors and Lancers had these panels from 1960, Lancers were shelved when the Elite came along.

Other changes for the elite were a 1622cc engine and upgrades in the rear end. Telescopic rear shocks, a major advance, a heavier hemisphere casting in the differential and fine splines. The axles were also stronger at the outer flange. All the same, there were still breakages, mostly the new hemisphere. The housing for the differential centre had been changed from aluminium to cast iron during the '60 to '61 period, as I recall, probably at the same time as they put a wider nut on the wheel bearing and a spacer to take up the difference in the commensurately wider hub.

1956 Cadillac

Late '70s Lincoln

1958 Buick Roadmaster

I think that's a Lanchester, probably earlier than '56 too. But maybe some of the Poms can help with the year?

Finally, early Subaru 1300 (?), probably late sixties.

Entered as a 56 Daimler. Which is what I thought though I reckon it is closer to 54?

Some of those clubbies too I feel were a bit new.

Westfield from '69?

I didn't know they made them that far back, you might be right there. And the Elfin Clubman, I thought they stopped making them in the mid-sixties. Joe Bosworth posted as such on the Clubman thread last week, in fact.

Mid-seventies Moroni 350...

Which I have never heard of. Italian? 350 is very small for a V twin.

I've been told many times there are literally hundreds of makers of motorcycles in Italy...

I thought it might have been a Laverda, just from the look of the engine, but when I went to google and put in '350 Laverda' I got a good pic of the bike with '3½' on the side.

Don't forget that Yamaha once made a 100cc twin and I'm sure there are others. 250cc fours abound.

And Italy, don't forget, is the place where they made a 1100cc (or 1000cc?) van with a 7-speed gearbox.

Lovely pictures, Lee and Lynton. But I see this as an event to look at rather than to take part in. This morning on ABC Local Radio several listeners called in to voice the complaint I figured out 10 years ago, the last time I took part.

My last experience was a grid lock just about all the way from the start at Barrett Reserve to some distance north of the Adelaide CBD. A tremendous way of burning out your clutch and, for those with iffy cooling, boiling if there's any temperature on the day. Even after we started to climb into the Adelaide Hills, the convoy necessarily moved at the speed of the inevitable slow car because no roads were made one way - as it used to be years ago. Callers to ABC 891reminded us of that and one caller noted that during The Tour DownUnder (bike race over several days) roads are closed. That said, cyclists are, as we know, god-like and motorists are infidels.

One caller suggested that the participating cars start from three locations, all joining up further along the road to Birdwood. An idea that's not ideal, but in light of the large number of vehicles, worthy of consideration in my 'umble view.

So I say long may the Bay to Birdwood last. It's a great event, with 1750 wonderful cars. The scene at Birdwood Mill is wonderful if the weather is clement! But it could be greater if those providing the spectacle were considered a little more.

I had a reasonable run. Stop start for no apparent reason from Tolley Rd to Hancock and a slow run from Houghton to Birdwood behind a very slow Belvedere [pictured at the top!]  It took me about 90 min.

There was still cars coming in at 1pm though and reputedly a 3 hour trip.

Again a lack of interest from the Govt. A couple of thousand cars is no worse than peak hour every day. Make the traffic lights work properly and control a few turns.

Though as I said I had a reasonable run, far better than the last 2.

I am sure tourism minister Bignell turned up for a photo opportunity at the start and then departed with no thoughts of the real world.

My view is that there was more interesting cars parked on the side of the road watching than on the run. The earlier [why] start meant less spectators on Anzac Hwy than usual. A little early on a Sunday for many.

The commentator at the start was waffling about that a third of the entrants were new,, probably because they had burnt many of the others in the past!

I entered the day entries closed, as late as a week before the event  I got an email that they would still accept entries,,, at the increased fee. The program has 1755 official entries plus the Police, ETSA etc entries.

I do know after last time many regular entrants did not enter,, a well known circuit owner has given up after 2 years ago. And he had multiple entries for vintage and classic events.

There was a HUGE amount of interstaters this year, maybe a quarter?  Are the Victorians taking over the event!

A friend was on Hwy 8 Friday and said he saw a LOT of cars coming over from Vic.

The surprise in there, Lee, is the Simca station wagon...

They weren't a bad thing. Purely Australian production as I recall.

118.jpg073.jpgUtes and trucks. Edit above!

Above,

1 EJ Holden ute. Last of the old grey motors.

2  Ford Mainline. Aussie only I believe. Very popular in its day. Y block power and quite  few options too,,, and they rusted! This one was for concours. Look at the Aussie racing thread, quite  few are pictured as towcars/ transporters in the day.

1 A lovely restored little Bedford, even still 6 cyl power.

2 C10 Chev

3 F truck LWB

4 HG Holden ute

5 Holden HQ 1 ton. These were based on the HQ sedan and were super popular with tradies and farmers etc. A heap still in regular service including this one seemingly. Lots of these are modified and dressed uip with all the sedan goodies. See my initial post for pics of the upmarket sedans . Edit,, this tonner is later than HQ. The tonners retained the HQ shape right through to the WB in about 81. I looked at my own pic, the dash did follow the sedan versions.

6 HK Holden ute, modified!  HK was the only one of the 3 models in this shape to have HOLDEN pressed in the tailgate. That t/g showed signs of a LOT of repair!

Great photos L and L.
Re the Elfin Clubman. You will note a Mk 2 badge on the grille. Jeff Gransden owned a workshop just down the road from the Elfin factory. He always liked the Elfin Clubman and was able to buy an original in the 70's. he later sold this, but always wanted another. Around 1988 he approached the then owners of Elfin and obtained the chassis jigs and body moulds. He made seven chassis of which five were finished and registered. One of the remaining chassis has been completed and competes regularly in hillclimbs at Collingrove. The Gransden cars differ from the originals in the front suspension and the wheelbase is shorter. Gransden called the cars Elfins and they were sometimes entered in competition as Elfin Clubman, Elfin Clubman Replica and Elfin Clubman Mk 2. The photo is of one of these.
There is a lot of angst among the owners of original Elfins as these cars were not made by Garrie Cooper, they were not made in the Elfin factory and they weren't wheeled out of the Elfin factory when they were complete. The fact that they also have Elfin ID plates does not help the feelings of the original owners. Years later the Gransden jigs and moulds were borrowed and another four cars made, also badged as Elfins, but that is another story which will be shared when my book is finally published.

That Prince Skyline with the race number on the side is a fairly rare and probably quite valuable car.
It is an ex Prince factory lightweight race car. It was sold to a Kiwi Carlos Neats who raced the car quite extensively with quite a bit of success. It was imported into Aust a number of years ago and is now owned by Noel Sinclair.
Quite a lot has been done to get tha car back to an extremely well presented unit.

Induction noise is courtesy of three 40mm DCOE webers standard from the factory fit out on theses cars.

As I said some of those clubbies were a but suss for the 1978 cut off. I was aware there was some odd cars around with Elfin badges made during Don Elliots /Tony Edmondsens reign. I did not it was that many. Keith Poole built several Vees too. Next door.

Which workshop did Jeff build them? In 88 I though he was still in the service station, later he was in Woodlands Tce
