Trackside Advertising

Why is today's trackside advertising so bland today?

 

Not long ago (the 2000s, and especially the 90s) trackside advertising was a big part of how colorful and vivid the sport used to be. It just felt right to see Fuji TV advertising for the Japanese GP, Fosters for the Australian GP, Air Canada for the Canadian GP, Sinopec for the Chinese GP, etc, etc. Now all the tracks look basically the same, with largely the same sponsors (or sometimes a worrying lack of).

 

Have the rules for trackside advertising changed? Does it hurt the finances of the tracks (the chances of hosting a GP) not to be able to have a local sponsor?

I hate the computer generated advertising. It looks so dated even by today's standards. I can't imagine how bad it will look 10 to 20 years from now when we're rewatching old races on Youtube.

Even the advertising was better in the past. The extent of F1's ruin never ceases to amaze.

Bernie controls it. That's why it lacks a bit of variety and colour these days.

Tracks used to be able to sell the trackside advertising to offset the high Berniefee. But now FOM has control over that as well. So you see $10 drinks and $200-300 entry fees.

I think FOM has controlled all the ads shown at track for a long time. The track don't get anything for it.

Yup, Bernie sells the rights to 'brand' each race. When he signed Rolex to be 'official time keepers' over Tag Heur he gave them something like 8 races into the bargain.

I think Monaco still do their own deal, I always remember the Zepter adverts at the tunnel... I don't even know what Zepter are/do... But I could draw their logo in a flash!

I completely agree, and it's symptomatic for F1's problems. The current regs allow for very little diversity in almost every aspect, so you get this bland formula with tracks that all look alike and more or less have the same characteristics. The same goes for the cars and engines. Just loosen up the regs and let someone with a more long term vision rule F1, instead of having BCE and CVC sucking the life out of F1 for short-term gain.

 Paddy McNally's company called Allsport was in on the ground floor of Bernie's F1

They handled all the trackside advertisement and Hospitality

He left the company in 2011

 

Some guy named David Campbell took over.

Prices are a lot higher than they used to be, especially in naming rights fees. And I just get the impression sponsors don't see the effectiveness in it anymore. A lot of races have lost their name-sponsor. Which is good, if you hate Santander Trophies.

a) CVC/BCE never asked for the new 'bland' regs.
b) CVC has been in this for 10 years now.  What is short-term?

c) Are Mercedes so far ahead, and Honda so far behind, because they have more or less the same characteristics? Is this why Williams and Force India are rarely racing together, despite having the same PU?

d) few tracks look alike

Wonderful superimposed adverts had a major fail when the Ferrari drove 'over' it today.... Noticed they deleted the adverts from the replays.

Strange choice of thing to superimpose anyway, wonder who is paying for the 'Sochi gets things done' ads/pixels...
