So, after Button's comments over the radio in Singapore, and Alonso's comments today, it's obviously that (unsurprisingly) neither McLaren driver is particularly happy right now.

Button's future has been the topic of much discussion recently, and today Alonso said he 'did not know' if he would be in F1 next year either.

My question to you is who do you think is more likely to leave the team at the end of this year? Or do you think they'll both be there next season?

if one was to leave, I would say Jense. He's been like this for the like 90% of the season. Alonso seems someone who is a lot more into it and committed.

Ron said they'll both be there next year.

Of course things can change, but for now, that's pretty solid confirmation.

1/3 Some things from today that seem not clear to everybody: -Today was our 3rd best result of the season !! we keep working hard.

2/3. When we are fighting in group is difficult, we all want to win, and sometimes transmit the team radios, but it should be private chats.

3/3. No one should have any doubt that I have 3 years with McLaren and my career in F1 will end with this team, hopefully winning everything

The more Alonso keeps insisting that he's staying at McLaren, the more I expect him to leave.

I don't believe it will happen. But for the championship, it would be much better to see him in a Red Bull next year!

Neither probably - but I cant think of a reason why either would want to stay beyond the fact leaving would end their F1 careers.

What's the betting Alonso ends up back at Enstone to replace Grosjean?

The one Ron appeases less. The rumors of Button leaving and Alonso whinging could be attempts to curry better favors within the team. Seems to have worked for JB as RD publicly had his back whereas Alonso as usual has rubbed the TP once again the wrong way.

Of course he said not just "I don't know", but "I don't know, there are still five races to go now and I think we need to improve the situation and make sure we are competitive and on top of our problems.", answering what might have seemed to him like a stupid question if he is committed and has no performance clauses (like Dennis said). I think it was more like "I don't know why you journalist people keep asking stupid questions like this when we are in the middle of the current season".

Formula 1 arrived in Japan with speculation raging about Jenson Button following newspaper reports he was poised to announce his retirement.
Within 24 hours there were murmurings that, in fact, it was Alonso's position in the team that was in more serious doubt....
"What makes you so sure Fernando will be around next year?" said one senior McLaren figure when the question of Button's future was raised with him.

Would like to see both alonso and button leave. Having two champions only emphasises how crap the car is. They are paying around €45m for two drivers who dont want to be there and complain after every race. Get vandoorne and magnussen in for €1m and they will have two motivated young prospects. Of course they do not have the experience but there are positives and negatives in both situations.

Alonso wants title number three. The less likely it looks, the more he will cast about elsewhere, he has already mentioned how endurance racing is something he may like. But it's too soon to tell, whether the car show any promise at all by the end of the season. But if it's still the POS it is right now at Abu Dhabi, hope is quickly drying up.

Button seems to be still enjoying the carnival, and still making a lot of money. There's little reason for him to leave right now, although driving that car has to be painful.

It's guaranteed that the car will be just as **** at the last race as it is now. The question is 2016 and beyond

You'll recall that last year after the Russian Grand Prix, Alonso said:

Alonso: 'It's good, and I will do the best for my future and the best for the future of Ferrari as well, because it's the team that I love, and when you know it you will say: "it was so obvious that you will do that".'
Question: 'So still in F1?'
Alonso: 'We'll see.'

Anyway, I don't see how either of them would be able to go anywhere else in F1.

If there are third cars they'll most likely end up being for young drivers as that's been just about the only way they've so far been discussed.

It's seems to me that it's either McLaren or out of F1. But who knows...! :stoned:

Why isnt Alonso angling for RBR? The McLaren Honda project aint picking any pace, at least till 2017.

I'm sure he said he was going to end his career with Ferrari.

Maybe his career is to be finished at McLaren - just a shame it was in 2007  :drunk:

Swop a car with a crap engine for a car with no engine?

I don't think RBR would want him.  I think it was pretty telling last season when VET jumped into Ferrari, instantly RBR promoted KYV.  ALO who went from self-styled "i can go to any team I want" found that his only option was to go to McLaren Honda.

Now, the fact is he was probably always going there, and the further fact is that he needs to be in a works team, as VET did, and HAM had made the move the year before., the other two world champions on the grid already had their works seats

The thing is hiring ALO brings some massive baggage and it isn't a given that every team wants to deal with that.

A couple of reasons, I think:

  • A bad engine is still better than no engine.
  • Red Bull is openly questioning its desire to be in F1. I recall this being part of the reason Alonso first left Renault.
  • Red Bull doesn't seem interested in Alonso. Even their A-team is pretty new! And with Sainz and Verstappen they have two of the most exciting rookies already under contract.

It is very likely that RBR will end up with a Ferrari or Merc engine next year. Nothing can be worse than Honda surely.

Button is leaving, Alonso is leaving, Lotus is leaving, Red Bull is leaving, Toro Rosso is leaving.

And Renault maybe too. And the end of next year Honda will be gone too.

So true

the forum would go in to melt down if Hass announced Alonso as well as as his driver next week

Some quotes from BBC link already posted above:

At first, this seemed hard to believe - the Spaniard is less than a year into a three-year deal, which he signed after extricating himself from a Ferrari contract that still had two years to run. But it soon became clear that something was indeed going on.

"What makes you so sure Fernando will be around next year?" said one senior McLaren figure when the question of Button's future was raised with him.

"Definitely I can tell you I will not go anywhere else," he said. "I will hopefully win. I am in this project because I trust this project."

That was classic F1 - it sounds like a denial, but it isn't really. There is enough wriggle room in there for it to mean a number of things.

I went to find Alonso on his own later and asked him to clarify whether he would definitely be at McLaren next season.

"I guess so," he replied, with a big smile, knowing exactly what he was saying and the impact it would have.

Then came the race. And afterwards his interview on the BBC. Will we see you in F1 next year? "I don't know," said Alonso.
