First press release regarding next year's Members' Meeting on the 19th and 20th March

GOODWOOD MEMBERS’ MEETING TO

HOST INCREDIBLE SUPER TOURING DISPLAY

The Goodwood Road Racing Club 74th Members’ Meeting will celebrate the golden age of the British Touring Car Championship in 2016 with a special on-track collection of Super Touring machines of the 1990s.

Sixteen cars, spanning Super Touring’s most outstanding years, will play a starring role at the Members’ Meeting on March 19-20 with a colourful high-speed demonstration on each day of the event.

The ‘Super Touring’ name came into being in 1995 and was applied to the set of touring car regulations that became the  BTCC’s sole class in ‘91 that centered around two-litre, normally-aspirated saloons such as the Vauxhall Cavalier and Nissan Primera.

The Members’ Meeting track activity will focus on the spectacular winged machines of 1995-2000 that resulted in championship successes for John Cleland, Frank Biela, Alain Menu, Rickard Rydell and Laurent Aiello.

Two-time BTCC Champion Cleland and podium finisher Patrick Watts – both of whom race in the HSCC’s Super Touring Championship – will take part in the Goodwood demonstration in, respectively, their own 1997 Vauxhall Vectra and ‘98 Peugeot 406.

The 2000 Honda Accord in which Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen won the last BTCC race held to Super Touring rules, the Ford Mondeo in which Rickard Rydell won three times the same season, and Jo Winkelhock’s 1994 BMW 318i are also confirmed already.

So are an ex-works Audi A4 Quattro like the one in which Frank Biela won the 1996 title, one of the Volvo S40s used by Rydell in his title-winning campaign of ‘98 and David Leslie’s Nissan Primera, in which the Scot finished second in the championship the following season.

Another Leslie car, the RML-run Ecurie Ecosse Cavalier in which the he took his maiden BTCC success at Thruxton in 1993, will take part, as will the ex-Jean-Christophe Boullion Renault Laguna from the 1999 season, with more names added in due course.

The Super Touring high-speed demos join those for sensational ground-effect Formula 1 cars and monstrous five-litre Group 5 sportscars on the Members’ Meeting line-up.

Goodwood can also today announce the names of all 11 races that will be held over the weekend. New events include the Hailwood Trophy for two-stroke grand prix motorbikes of 250 and 350cc, and the Alan Mann Trophy for Ford GT40s.

Members of the Goodwood Road Racing Club can secure their spots at the event now with those on the Club waiting list able to purchase from 2 November. A small number of tickets will go on general sale on 1 January 2016, subject to availability.

RACE-BY-RACE GUIDE*

Gerry Marshall Trophy – For Group 1 touring cars of a type that raced up to 1982 (two-driver race with ‘sprint’ race to decide grid for main event)

Graham Hill Trophy – For GT cars of a type that raced at Goodwood from 1960-66

Peter Collins Trophy – For sports racing cars of a type that raced from 1948-55

Hailwood Trophy – For two-stroke 250cc and 350cc grand prix motorcycles of a type that raced from 1970-82

Bruce McLaren Trophy – For Can-Am and Group 7 sports prototypes of a type that raced up to 1966

Parnell Cup – For grand prix, Formula 2 and voiturette cars of a type that raced up to 1953

Whitmore Cup – For saloon cars of less than 2-litre capacity of a type that raced from 1960-66

Brooks Trophy – For 2.5-litre, front and rear-engined Formula 1 cars of a type that raced from 1954-60

Derek Bell Cup – For one-litre ‘screamer’ Formula 3 cars of a type that raced from 1964-70

Alan Mann Trophy – For Ford GT40s Mk1s of a type that raced pre-1966

Sunbeam Trophy – For Edwardian racing specials of a type that raced up to 1923.

High-speed demonstrations featuring ground-effect Formula 1 cars, five-litre Group 5 sportscars and Super Touring Cars of the mid-1990s will also take place on each day of the 74th Members’ Meeting.

Details of the Revival and Festival of Speed dates here:

Goodwood announces provisional 2016 Festival of Speed and Revival dates

Goodwood is delighted to announce provisional dates for the 2016 Festival of Speed and Revival, ahead of tickets going on general sale on 5 November.

The Festival of Speed, which celebrates the very best from the past and present of motoring and motor sport, will be held on 23-26 June, 2016*.

As usual, the event will open with the Moving Motor Show on Thursday, 23 June, featuring many of the world’s largest motor manufacturers showcasing their latest models, alongside exciting and innovative concepts. From Friday-Sunday, 24-26 June, the famous Goodwood hill will be taken over by a glittering collection of the greatest cars, bikes, drivers and riders from the history of motor sport.

The Revival is the world’s largest and most celebrated historic motor racing and vintage culture event, bringing back to life Goodwood Motor Circuit’s glory days as an active race track from 1948-66. It will take place on 9-11 September, 2016*.

A host of superstars from the world of motor sport attended Goodwood events this year, including the most iconic grand prix motorcycle racer of all time, Valentino Rossi, alongside fellow World Champions on two wheels Casey Stoner, Freddie Spencer, Kenny Roberts and John Surtees, plus F1 title winners Jenson Button, Damon Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart, US legends Don ‘Big Daddy’ Garlits, Richard Petty and Ken Block, and Le Mans heroes Tom Kristensen, Derek Bell and Emanuele Pirro. Expect a similarly star-studded line-up in 2016.

Key highlights of both events, including the Festival of Speed theme, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets and hospitality packages for both events will be on sale to Members of the Goodwood Road Racing Club on Saturday, 31 October. Those on the GRRC waiting list will be able to secure their tickets from Monday, 2 November, while tickets will go on general sale on Thursday, 5 November.

Tickets for the 74th Members’ Meeting, which will be held on March 19-20, 2016 are already on sale to Members. Those on the wait list will be able to purchase from 2 November, with a limited number of tickets going on general sale on 1 January, subject to availability.

I'm re-watching the whole thing, and am seeing the ground effects F1 cars, that I missed.

I may have soiled myself!

Lotus 86 indeed.  :)

Shame she never got pushed out - would have been good to get a proper side view.  She was at Goodwood as a static a few years ago as well.

That car has always looked as if it was designed for a V24 and the driver accommodation appears to have been added as an afterthought.

There is usually something unique or special that has convinced me by this time that I should attend the year's FOS, but I have found nothing to date.

Any clues, anyone?

My personal score card:

Revival: 7

Members' Meeting: 2

Festival of Speed: 0

I'm sure it's a great event, but for some reason it just doesn't move me....not enough to make the big trip and take the financial punishment, anyway.

I've stopped going to the Festival, it's just not worth the hassle.  There isn't enough of what I'm into to justify the expense and high blood pressure, last attended 2014

FOS:  14

Revival: 12

MM:  2

Now aiming for all the "classic" events

Would agree that there is quite a lot of stuff at FOS that I'm not into (bikes, F1, 'celebs') but a great deal that I am: especially the odd visit by LMP2 machinery and maybe (though not often enough!) cars from the British Hill Climb Championship.

And the odd (and many are odd) historic gem is well worth the hassle. I would like numbers to be limited a bit more, but I understand the way that goes:

FOS: 10

MM: 1

Revival: 1

(soon to be FOS 11 and Revival 2)

Confused by the pair of you, the forecasts seem to say 17 degrees and dry. Perfect, in other words.

Edit - there was lots of mud (some of the metal walkways were atrocious), and was warmer today than I thought it would be. Less confused now.

There was a 936C, but this doesn't look like it, certainly not in its 1986 guise.

But maybe it is 005, and it's only pretending to be 002?

It's a great looking car and it probably won Le Mans, does anything else really matter?

Most likely: 1986 936 would have been Ernst Schuster's 936CJ (IIRC?)

I also thought the 919 2016 Le Mans winner looked remarkably pristine for last week's LM car. But Jaguar did it back in 1990 with that year's winner: car shown at Abingdon had Brundle's name on the door, so obviously something awry. It turned out to be the No.4 car (I think), repainted as the winner, but with history revised to include Brundle as the named driver.

It will not be the first or last time...

But it does make the hobby a little less enjoyable if one is constantly doubting provenance.

This year there appeared to be many more errors and spelling mistakes on the caption boards above the cars than in previous years, so the mistake on the Porsche 936 may have been down to ignorance on the part of Goodwood rather than misidentification by the car's owners.

There were also quite a lot of cars parked under the wrong sign.  And the motorcycles were even worse!

We had the same problem at Cholmondley - the Goodwood of the North Midlands. However with several no shows on Friday several competitors spread out and were parking their cars in the adjacent bay under the wrong signage. Not a problem for anyone who knew what to expect but confusing for the masses.

Pretty amazed about the lack of Goodwood posts after what seemed (from the live feed anyway - unfortunately I could not attend) to have been a great event?!

I would love to see any pictures of the pre war offerings please. The Austro Daimler sprint racer looks to be a super car, and did the Lorraine Dietrich GP racer from the Brooklands Museum run properly at last?

I was in too late to see the pre-war cars do their first run and browsing the stalls when they did their second.  So I only got some static shots.

One Austro-Daimler, as ordered:

And a couple from Renault:
