To save costs Sky are going to merge all Sky Sports F1 from Germany and Italy into one team to save costs after overspending on PL.

It's an interesting risk that Sky are taking although you have to wonder that someone people in the team are going to be made redundant. (Poll Above)

What's your thoughts on this?

I take it this means the likelihood of F1 becoming
'Free' on Sky is no more. Croft, he's an idiot and I hate him.

At what point is it stated that the presenters will be merged into one team? All that was said was that the production teams will be merged. To me that implies everything behind the scenes will be one cohesive unit, however, what we see on TV will continue to remain unchanged (maybe with the exception of VTs being the same). I may have that completely wrong, but that's just how I understood it.

I think you had it right until the word "cohesive". ;)

But who knows, right? Maybe Sky are just cutting waste. Strange how they felt like separate production teams were important in 2012-15 though.

@f1broadcasting: Regarding the #SkyF1 news, I assume the current on air team will not be affected. Would be surprised if they were. Blog post in the next day

https://twitter.com/...666504259190784

This isn't about presenters, it is just the production team. All of the European channels will be controlled by the same people, but the content and presenters on each will be different.

Yes this makes perfect sense, but can we drop Croft anyway?

Herbert. Christ, he's awful. Like Eddie Jordan without the scoops.

Do either Sky Italy or Germany broadcast F1 in English? That would rather preclude any future shared onscreen team.

They've only just merged together, to be fair. They were three separate companies, though all News Corp controlled, up until last year when BSkyB "bought" Sky Italy and Sky Deutschland.

Yes, its just the behind the scenes stuff - the average viewer will not notice at all probably. There will still be separate German, Italian and British broadcast teams.

It makes sense really, to be honest.

But for the fun of the poll - I think Lazenby could be got rid of, though not sure who would replace him. Ted is best making chaos in the pits - actually a Herbert/Hill presenting double act could be quite fun, with Ant and Karun taking it in turns as usual as the SkyPad boffins.

I actually think Lazenby is fairly decent. He didn't beat around the bush with Ron Dennis in Suzuka and asked all the right questions.

Who are we suggesting replace him?! Token Perry is awful on BBC.... Bring back Rosenthal?! :-/

Lazenby isn't the problem. Folk are always whinging to replace the F1 folk... Remember the hate for James Allen, and now he's one of the best at what they do, and yet the baying mob made sure he was blacklisted from the BBC when the rest of the ITV lot made the switch.

Glad he survived that, as his passion and knowledge are second to none.

Allen was never the problem on ITV, it was the production team and their lowest common denominator approach to push the channel's Lewhysteria rhetoric. Plus he suffered from coming straight off the back of Murray and being judged in comparison to him, rather then these days where he's compared to Croft (with very similar flaws to James) and Legard (cliched and cringeworthy)

Sky Italia has the best on screen pundits. It's a fun broadcast.

I dont get the hate for Crofty - I think he is better than Edwards (he always seems a half-a-lap behind everyone else) and Legard (never liked him), Allen (though he is doing a good job in FP) before him.

Actually I think the presenting crew for Sky are better than BBC - I'd take Lazenby, Croft, Brundle, Hill and Herbert over Perry, Edwards, Coulthard and Jordan. Suzy just rambles on about the same topic over and over, Jordan speak BS most of time and Coulthard has the personality of a boiled potato - he should be replaced in the com-box by McNish.

But the BBC have better "off screen" personal - I feel MacKenzie and Gow are more adequate interviewers than Pinkham and Brookes. I actually think Lee MacKenzie should be the main BBC presenter over Suzy Perry. Tom Clarkson is also good, always well informed but will never trump Ted - him and Brundle should be top of everyones F1 presenting wishlist!

I feel that this thread is an inadvertent "which Sky presenter do you most dislike" thread, which is something I think the forums were missing.

Personally, it was initially a tough call between Herbert and Lazenby. But, on balance, Herbert won.

In fact, I would so far as to say that even Johnny Herbert with his appalling bad luck couldn't fail to win this one.

Maybe it's just me but I never understood why people get so worked up over whoever is presenting, commentating, etc.

Agreed on the Murray comparison and I was guilty of it myself in my younger days. The lead commentator gig post-Murray was pretty much the definition of poisoned chalice, anyone was going to fail no matter who they were.

I still feel he didn't "fit" but I still honestly don't feel I can be objective on that because I was always subconsciously comparing him to Murray. I did sometimes sense he was trying a bit to hard with the race starts and "xxxx WINS!!!" whereas with Murray it came across natural. It might be just he was (is) a genuinely highly knowledgeable and informative journalist (going by his written work) who wasn't suited to voice commentary, no shame in that really.

In a different way I felt Brundle didn't fit in 2011 (for the races I actually bothered to watch.. it was the first Pirelli/DRS year so went out of my way to miss a few), good as an informative analyst/co-commentator, but as lead commentator it didn't feel right.

Croft I just find very meh all round.

TL;DR - Murray is irreplaceable.

I thought they were supposed to be doing some cross over this year with the presenters - at the start of the year one of the German presenters was on the F1 show and there were a few features during race build-up in the early races (possibly an ItalianSky?/Ferrari one with a weird game that sticks in my mind which I thought was worse than the stuff UK Sky do but then after Lazenby played hook-a-duck with Ricciardo in Monaco maybe not :drunk: ???) but they seem to have fizzled out recently (or I've stopped paying attention).

Should we not be able to select more than one? I think both Herbert and Croft should go. I'm sure there must be a better commentator or potentially a better commentator somewhere and Herbert would need to be replaced.

Yes at the start of the season they said this would be happening. Tanja was on the F1 show.

Agree, even if he was sometimes clueless, the guy loved his job, you always felt that. Now we have the dull and clueless fanboy Ross instead of him. Sky has already reached the RTL level sadly..

Honestly, compaired to the kind of commentators we get in Romania in the last 15 years (listening to them is a little bit like the chinese water torture) , the Sky team is really sky-high. So, I can't exclude anyone and I'm not going to try making up my mind...does soembody really have to go?

I wonder if we'll ever get a Netflix for sport. Not necessarily Netflix, but an online streaming only service just for sport.
