The lineup at Daytona is more impressive by the day. Shane van Gisbergen (V8 Supercars champion) confirmed with the Weathertech Racing team in GTD: http://www.motorspor...olex-24-859628/

van Gisbergen is a weapon, certainly one of the fastest GT drivers in the world. I just hope he doesn't drive the Merc like his V8 Supercar.

He'll be fine, this will be his fourth start. His previous attempts were with Alex Job Racing in a Porsche, with a best in-class finish of 2nd in 2015.

I have to ask,if none of these OEMs even want to bother with these bits, why did anyone want them mandated in the first place? I had assumed GM was the driving force just as in DP but even their 20,000 dollar annual support budget seems to have dropped to around 500. All the OEMs could've just slapped their engines to stock P2s and rebranded them with stickers as whatever they wanted... Which has already happened before. Even last year they referred the cars as per engine so you had "Mazda Prototype" (Lola) and "Nissan Prototype" (Oreca) and "Honda Prototype" (Onroak) and of course the rebrand DPs...
Even stranger yet, IMSA states that another reason for these panels is to create performance differences... Which is funny considering they want (political manipulation aside) identical clone BoP curves for everyone and no actual development is allowed.

Jeez ..don't come in here offering some simple canon like that !!
All missives must be infused with pedantic hate and derision and nitpicking bitterness.
Fast and Cool....?

And at least Matt isn't here. I'd rather go to dentist for Christmas morning than have discussion with him ever again.

But but... this way anyone with a GT3 engine could just slap it to the back of a LMP2 and hit the track without IMSA "special design approval" (Nissan-not-different-enough-fiasco).

No they won't.
Only GTEs get bopped at Le Mans.
IMSA sanctioned
P "DPi" - Semi-spec BoP racing
P "P2" - Semi-spec BoP racing
LMPC - Spec racing
GTLM - BoP & secret waiver racing
GTD - BoP racing
CTSCC GS - BoP racing
CTSCC ST - BoP racing
Lites LMP3 - Semi-spec free racing
Lites "Mazda" - Spec racing
Porsches, Lambos etc support series - Spec racing
ACO sanctioned
LMP1 Hybrid - Free racing*
LMP1 Non Hybrid - Free racing**
LMP2 - Semi-spec free racing***
LMP3 - Semi-spec free racing
CN - Semi-spec free racing
LMGTE-PRO - BoP & secret waiver racing
LMGTE-AM - BoP & secret waiver racing
GT3 - BoP racing
GT-CUP - BoP racing
* EoT once a year but it's based on actual mathematics and not round by round lottery politics
** nothing except in relation to hybrid cars (nothing inter class)
*** theoretically BoP can be applied per regulations but it never actually happens, hasn't for five years
LMP3 is the only non-100%-spec category to have no BoP in IMSA whereas ACO has quite a few.

Sonny, I'm talking about the DPis going to Le Mans. The ACO wanted to BoP them to be in line with standardized LMP2s: http://sportscar365....pi-regulations/

But they're not going to Le Mans, so it doesn't really matter what they may or may not have planned And in any case it was about the Zytek vs OEM engine balancing, not body panels.
I am however concerned about Beaumesnil's talks of possibly integrating it into LMP1 nonhybrid at some point, that's gonna be a mess of the century. I don't want those things at LM. However now with SMP and (seemingly) Ginetta coming over and actually backing the class, I doubt they want to introduce outsiders. Suppose Beaumesnil wasn't so wrong about potentially ~8 privateer grid by 2018 after all (ByKolles/SMP/Ginetta/probably-Rebellion).

I doubt Dallara will just transform the LMP2 chassis into LMP1 but rather start from clean sheet, as I don't believe it to be as simple as Oreca morphing 04 into 05 or even 05 into 07.
It's a bit curious that they chose Dallara in the first given that they had own chassis in LMP2. You would have thought that to be the main driving force in choosing LMP1 too after the spec rules were enforced. However I'm not complaining, I'm extremely glad they chose LMP1 in the first place and not just took the lazy route in LMP2 again. At this rate, the most shocking thing about 2018 will be if Rebellion doesn't return.
