How old was Denny when he died? I suspect younger than he looked.

That Bathurst he was on the pace, and as a semi retired racer probably upset a few regulars.

Like most Aussie motorsport tragics it was very obvious he was in trouble as the car bounced off the fence several times. And the look on the people assisting it was fairly obvious what had happened. Very sad.

Not many people remember that Denny almost - repeat almost - tried his hand at rallying in the UK. Immediately after he had won the 1967 World F1 Championship, Barry Gill of The Sun newspaper managed to persuade him to have a go in the RAC rally of that year. After a brisk bargaining session with most of the British 'works' teams, Denny was 'placed' with Standard-Triumph, where he was all set to use a fuel-injected TR5-engined Triumph 2000 saloon.

Although Denny knew nothing about rallying, in the run-up to the event at least he carried out some familiarisation and 'training' at the rough-road circuit at Bagshot. This was the year, incidentally, in which Graham Hill was lined up for a 'works' Ford Lotus-Cortina drive.

Denny turned up at pre-event scrutineering on the day before the event, went amiably through all the formalities, then disappeared home until the start on the following day. That was the event, though, when a rapidly-spreading Foot-and-Mouth disease caused the last-minute cancellation of the event.

Denny never got to go rallying therefore, though he sometimes admitted that he had been looking forward to scrapping with Graham Hill ....
