As a teenager I recall reading an artical by an American from California regarding his experience Racing F3 in Europe . The article had detailed information about racing his brabham transported by his VW ( what else) transporter. Does anyone recall the article? Anyone know what issue it was in and who the author/driver was? That era has always interested me for the purity of the racing. I would love to revisit that article. In 1967, as an 18 year old I had the pleasure to drive a Lotus 31 at the JR school. Thanks for any help or comments.

Well, 50 years is a long time ( a lot of scotch under the bridge so to speak) but I don't recall that it was Pike or Wayne Mitchell. As I recall, the driver was from California, and commented that the total cost was about what he was spending racing a Porsche in SCCA club racing.

It was Roy Pike and I believe it was 1966 (at least the articles appeared in Road and Track in '66)--I have been thinking about those articles lately and will dig them up and scan them (assuming I can find them...).  I can PM them to you once I've gotten them scanned.

I believe there were 3 articles, one with details of his racing season and one about the financial aspects of his season and I don't remember the subject of the third article.  They were very interesting reading--particularly on the cost side.

That would be fantastic if you could find the and pm me with them. I do recall lots of interesting info on the cost and life style of F3 racing. Surprised that it was Roy Pike- he always was (and still is ) so low profile. Looking forward to what you find. Cheers

The articles were in Road & Track May and June 1966, and were by Cliff Haworth, entitled Racing in Europe. Part one 'So much to learn' part two 'The cost of racing' Cliff stayed in Europe until the early seventies, when I understand he died in a road crash.

Yes, that was the name! A 50 year bell has been rung.

I sure would like a copy of that article. I would like to read it as well as put it in my Cooper folder.

Just saw a short 2012 TNF thread about Haworth.

Argh!  Mike is right, of course.  The two articles (not three...) were by American Cliff Haworth and his 1965 F3 season with a Brabham BT16 (an F2 fitted with an F3 Cosworth MAE engine).  May and June, 1966 Road & Track.

I should have time to scan them tomorrow.

OK, I've scanned them but they are jpegs so are quite large and separate files.  I'll see if I can use some work software to convert them into pdf files.  But, I'm happy to send the as jpegs if you have space to receive them.

I am reading the Max Ruthford book "Paddock to Podium". Max was the mechanic referred to in the R&T article. He devotes an entire chapter to his year as an unpaid mechanic mechanic for Haworth. Lots more detail than the R&T article and some great pictures. A good read. Got mine on Kendle.

Great, Ron, thanks for the Ruthford link. I'll try in on my Kindle.
