Personally I don't find the cars ugly at all and I'm at a loss as to how anyone can think these engines are poor (well the merc one anyway!).

The engines are incredible, but FIA/FOM/teams do a horrible job at actually praising and marketing it.

I agree with him. I went to Spa this year, and despite the great weather and good atmosphere amongst the fans, the F1 parts of the weekend were crap. The noise was nothing like I've been used to in the past when going to races (no matter how boring, just hearing the engines stirred the soul - I really thought it wouldn't be too bad, but it was), and just looking at the santitised corners with the cars being dwarfed by acres of asphalt also disappointed me. Add in the complexities of the sport now, requiring quite detailed commentary to follow that you don't get at the track, then the experience there just wasn't worth the money of travel and tickets over being sat in my own living room. I never ever thought I'd say that about F1, but for the prices Silverstone need to charge, I just cannot justify buying next year (which I originally planned to).

Good point, forgot to include my hatred of the paved run offs, mis the gravel sand beaching and ruined classic tracks. Forgot to add to... Drivers being muted cause of political correctness and sponsors. I miss irvine, Jacques, Montoya characters... Sceptical do Alonso moaning there is next to no drivers speaking their minds n passion on the grid.

OK.So the bossman of Silverstone, the only circuit that hosts a GP in the UK is spitting blood that F1 in its current format is shite...Question is what's he gonna do about it? ....cancell future GPs unless or what?

He can't do anything about it. He's just stating the obvious but sadly it will fall on deaf ears. Nothing will change and the format will remain a complete borefest.

The general public know when people aren't being genuine, any false praise would go down like a lead balloon

Well you don't have to do the PR bullshit the paddock usually does of "best race ever! sell out crowd!" but you can look at in a different way. Ie how fast they're going on so litle fuel is actually impressive. You have to underline that efficiency can still be competitive.

I think a lot of the criticism is just as false. It's not like F1 2013 was Racing for the Ages.

Look, I agree the current F1 product isn't that good, but if you're the person responsible for selling the product, calling it sh*t in public ain't a great idea.

He also claims it is not "saleable" ......., so what was the crowd this year?

Technically they might be, but the racing is pretty crap. All the praise and marketing in the world won't make the viewer any happier if they are not enjoying the event.

The engines are impressive pieces of engineering, but that similarly applies to thousands of other products that nobody would pay money to watch.

Besides, F1 isn't cutting-edge technology. They're maximizing performance within a formula drawn up years ago. The people making F1 cars could easily built a car that is at least 10 seconds faster.

If the organisers are going to bamboozle the public they're probably going to need a different storyline than saying how fantastic the engineering on the engines is.

Sadly it's a mirror of life generally, certainly as far as the automotive industry is concerned. I grew up watching adverts for cars that focused on BHP, 0-60 times, motorsport success and driving excitement.

These days I'm supposed to get 'excited' by multimedia connectivity (who on earth needs social media in car?), MPG, green technology (that's blue, obviously) and parking cameras. All of which are, to me, about as exciting as watching a 70's OU programme on quadratic equations.

Couldn't agree more!
1. The track limits defined by white lines, with massive runoff areas, make it more akin to car park racing. No one wants to see drivers injured but track limits must be defined by a physical barrier (Tekra?) so that incursions are physically penalised.
2. Lamentable Pirelli tyres should be binned. Drivers are wasting their talents husbanding inferior rubber instead of racing near the limit. How do dodgy tyres contribute to racing, or, indeed, to road car technological development?
3. The money should be distributed to allow the junior teams to compete and remain financially viable - with deductions for teams employing 'pay' drivers.
4. Engine development should be de-regulated to allow new engine suppliers to enter the formula. And there really must be a step change between GP2 and F1 performance.
5. Bernie Eccleston is a greedy little **** and should be put out to grass! With him it has all been about chasing the money in the emerging markets at the expense of supporting the heartland of the sport. That isn't to say we should limit F1 to Europe but a season without the British, French, German, Italian, etc is IMO the kiss of death.
