You, sir, have a one-track mind. Good track though.

Mmm, that's a really lovely smile.
Back to cold hard reality:

"We have some experimental parts in the car, in preparation for next year, so we need to finish the race to give them as much mileage as possible," Alonso said. "The cars are in different configurations, to get comparative data, so from that point of view it’s also an interesting weekend even if we’re not competitive. We won’t have a spectacular race but we’re trying some very interesting solutions.”
Dunno what they're testing but I do remember some talk on ride height testing a day or two ago.
"We don’t have enough top speed and that’s very important on this circuit, but the car is well balanced. We knew it would be difficult, so we decided to take the penalty here but keep the new engine for the next races, so for here we put one of the worst engines we still have because, in any case, we don’t have many chances to fight for the points. But we’ll try to have some fun in the race, pass a few cars at the start and give a good battle to whatever cars we’ll have around us."

Reflecting on the very good starts we saw from the McLaren for most of the season, it seems to me that in Singapore and Japan neither driver had a really great start, and I'm wondering if that might be the pattern from now on.
Maybe Honda have tried to solve the deployment problem by lowering the amount of peak boost which is available, to make it last longer.

At one point in practise (this morning iirc) button's car seemed to be slithering round on its belly, even making sparks through the middle of corners

Having qualified in 13th place, Button will be racing in the pack on the opening laps and he's wary there could be a repeat situation as the Honda ERS inadequacies are highlighted in race trim.
"Unless Fernando gets a very good start, I think it is more of a problem for me and it will be an issue," Button said. "Whatever we do on lap one can be undone very easily. It’s tough in that situation – we are both very emotional and passionate about racing and we want to do all we can, even if it’s fighting for 13th.
This is what I've been expecting too, unfortunately. Lack of MGU-H harvesting will cost us far too much and we won't be able make up time with superior tire wear, most likely. Personally I'd suggest starting on the prime tire and going long, hoping for a SC then go to the end on the options.

Fuel management will be the key as well. I hope we won't run out of fuel at the end.

So frustrating.
What is?
Our terrible speed down the straights? Yeah, it's bad. Down 10-20 kph.
Wonder if we can get to the end of the race on these tires.

Another painful race where we're only ahead of the Manors. Good times.

Be happy that you are ahead of the Manors! That might not last forever

Looking at the sector speeds and sector times on live timing, it seems they are experimenting with deployment strategies.
Some laps JB is fast in sector one others FA, with a 7-8kph delta 236-244 kph. No traffice to deal with so strange really.
22kph down the Mercs on sector 2 speed trap, 15kph down on the RedBulls.

No kidding, with those Mercedes engines next season, I am honestly afraid we're gonna be last.

It was a pretty stupid thing to say, Massa is already 10 seconds ahead, there is no fun, no racing with this car.

Double points finish!
Fernando did 40 laps on the SS.
Here's an interesting point: no reliability issues at all this weekend IIRC. First time this year. Had minor one in Suzuka in FP1 for Fernando. Nothing here that was meaningful - had minor issue at end of FP2 for Fernando but no idea what it was and didn't seem significant. Reliability has definitely improved. Didn't even get lapped.

Points! Yep, that's what must be happy about now. Unfortunately though, Sauber scored even more points, so McLaren' isn't getting any closer to them.

Points, yes, but only faster than Manor, and a long way off the next faster car (Sauber)
#45

Coming to the race per se the car was a sitting duck on straights not just for Mercedes and Ferrari powered cars but even the Renault powered ones as well. This track with its two straight full throttle stretches exposed the Achilles heel of the package. The lack of ers boost on straights was there for everyone to see. Preseason will be massively important when Honda will sort out the ers and that is when the real beginning of this partnership will be made

You say that but the gap from us to Mercedes was less than the gap from us to Manor.

Jenson : deployment issues still persist. ERS cutting off way too early, getting overtaken in turn 12 was scary. Sitting ducks in the initial lap. The only car he was racing was Fernando. Deployments issues will not get better till next year.

Fernando: Positive result , double points finish, car kinder on tires, and reliability improving
