Maybe in Austin they can also let loose with some sixshooters like in IndyCar.

Oh God. Don't tell Lewis!

What about selecting one driver after each race who then has to wear a dunce cap at the next event.

Who should be the chosen one after Sochi?

Can't see why not as long as they're not overdoing it.

I like them, adds a bit of fun to the formalities.

And that russian hat looked far better than what Hamilton usually puts on his head.

Does anyone know ANY English person who wears a bowler hat?

I expect there are more Busby-wearers.

Busby is Hungarian traditionally even if more commonly associated with the UK.  I do know a couple of people who wear a bowler hat regularly, but then they are in the Diplomatic Service (friends of my grandad).

I would say yes but I see a big problem with changing the podium hats each race.

I mean we, the fans watching, may get confused who the 3 guys in national hats on the podium are - they could be anyone. No its much safer to stick to baseball caps so we recognise them as the drivers. :smoking:

(and yes I am still bitter about the ban on changing helmet designs )

People who attempt to get their source of humour from 'wacky' headwear are worse than snakes and ought to be left pegged out in the desert. And I'm sure millions of Russians were just so happy to see their national identity reduced down to just a funny hat. Yes, I am grumpy.

You've obviously never come across British university student union officials before!

This reader comment from below that article sums them up perfectly: http://discussion.th...malink/60419890 (scroll about one-third down the page and it will be highlighted).

I lump the hats into the same kind of grouping as I do those signs that state "You don't have to be mad to work here... but it helps!"
The kind of people that find it entertaining/amusing are the same kind of crashing party bores who you'd cross an international date line to avoid.
Tacky, vulgar, gauche.

Race winner Lewis Hamilton obviously did too because he was so disappointed not to see them back last year that he asked for (and got) Sheriff Andretti's so that his hat lust could be at least partially sated:

I've only just now realised that there's a Blazing Saddles joke in there somewhere.

Forget the hats, what about national drinks on the podium instead of champagne?

That comment is about as funny and mature as a comedy ****ing hat.

Hey, what about making them wear turbans for the India race. That's couldn't be seen as racist, could it ? I didn't realize that we were in the 70's again.

I like the idea, but I even more like variety.

So I'd prefer a Russian bear on the Russian GP podium. And someone gave yesterday an even more great idea. Have Putin wrestle with that bear on the podium.

If the winner gets a sombrero in Mexico, can he get arrested for being a racist when he enters the UK? Please don't turn the drivers into clowns wearing local folklore! Look what happened to Bernie in Russia?

I love it. I wish they did it at every circuit. The GPs are supposed to be national showcases. The Olympics makes a show of traditional garb. I'd like to see traditional hats and unique trophies. Hell, if there are no unique hats for a country, make it something else. If there was a Scottish GP, a kilt with the finishing place on it would be cool. Spice things up. Give the drivers some additional collectors items, and it'll be another piece of merchandise for the circuits to sell. PEACE.

Personally I think novelty hats would be a great fun idea and would liven up the podium. Someone make it happen.

Sophie;
That there OP is a beautiful testament to your education and intellect.
It is such a joy it is to read something on here as lovingly crafted and skillfully composed as this.
I'd read the phone book were you to have written it.

Thank You.
