Polls like these always give surprising answers.
Like really, ~14% here doesn't believe Alonso or Vettel would lead the championship according to the circumstances in the poll question?
Or 25% doesn't believe Button would. Who, I remind you, won a championship in a car far less dominant.
We need to look at the drivers this year.. Button and Alonso have a crap car, so it's hard to judge their performance. Personally, I can't see them not winning but still, by your logic, you can put any retired driver in the car, and he'd win. So for example lets put Lauda in that Merc and have him win another championship? Doubt it.

I think you're confusing my logic with something involving drivers that retired 30 years ago.

If Hamilton was in the Ferrari and some second rate driver was in the Merc, Lewis would still win a feW races but perhaps not enough for the title.
Kind of what Seb is doing this season...

Nope. Button isn't the same as when he won 6 years ago.Same goes for Alonso who's last WDC is even further back. They would not be the first drivers to lose their edge, when they have to drive a sup-par car. And I'm not talking about this season, but of the previous ones.

I think Vettel and Alonso would probably be closer to Hamilton but in this form, I couldn't see them beating him over the course of a season.
That assumption is based on nothing, only in Hungary did the best car get out of order and Hamilton messed up big time, in Singapore the merc wasn't dominating and suddenly Hamilton didn't look that special. Hamilton is being flattered by a mediocre teammate.
Most drivers would lead the championship in that rocketcar

So according to the poll all drivers could win. So who's the slowest of the drivers in the poll and who would be his team mate?

So you agree with AMUS ridiculous ratings about McLaren drivers this season…
I have been quite disconnected from F1 this boring season (IMHO), but I´ve been reading about McLaren-Honda, Ricciardo and races results. These are difficult times for McLaren and Honda. They´ve been losing money and prestige, people have been making fun of them, they should retire, they will never ever be competitive again…really difficult times. The only thing that has been working perfectly in the team is the thing placed between the wheel and the seat, the drivers. I read that Button is not the same, he has lost his edge, young drivers would be doing a better job…this is based on what? What would other drivers be doing if they were driving this car? Who would they beat and why? McLaren and Honda know quite well that their drivers are the best asset they have right now; this is the reason why Button will be in the team next season, why Honda defends Alonso after his outburst. Button is old, he should retire and blah, blah, but when things turn really bad, Button is the man they want. Alonso is disruptive, he criticizes the team and blah, blah, blah, but they want him no matter what.
I couldn´t care less about Button age (the always underrated driver, I have no idea about why Raikkonen is currently on Button level or why several other drivers, even the rookies, are better than he is right now) or Alonso character (the team must fire him because he says what everybody can see, sure. By the way, I have no idea about why Rosberg is on Alonso level), I care about them being professional drivers, fighting every race and helping the team to improve. McLaren and Honda say this, not me. The team was about to get rid of Button last season and here he is, fighting and helping, giving his talent and experience. Alonso is the driver that all teams have wanted, that several teams would want right now if they could pay him and fulfill his expectations. Both drivers could be doing gardening if they wanted, they have enough money and don´t have to prove anything at this point, but they are fighting race after race with a car full of issues, being guinea pigs race after race. They will probably be fed up of this situation if everything keeps the same or improves marginally next season, but talking about this season, up to now, they´ve been doing a superb job.
About the poll, most drivers is my vote, I don´t say all of them because there are some drivers whose performances can be quite unpredictable. I think Hamilton is the best or second best driver of this generation (Alonso is the other one who is the best or second best in my opinion), but thinking of this season, the only thing I can say is that he has been better than Rosberg, who hasn´t been especially brilliant this season. In no way I can say he has been better than some other drivers who have been driving totally different cars under totally different circumstances. I can´t understand why people state that those drivers who are driving the best cars are clearly the best drivers, I´ve seen several mistakes made by those drivers this season and they´ve basically finished where their car let them finish, sometimes far behind, even Vettel (who has been clearly better than Raikkonen and better than Rosberg too) has finished behind in some race. Nothing is clear regarding this matter, nothing at all.

I do I do...I DO! Fact is and allways has been, Without a good car underneeth you, you are nothing.A case in point. Why did one of the alltime greats - the late great Aryton Senna offer to drive one of Sir Frank Williams all conquaring car for no salary?<snip> I can´t understand why people state that those drivers who are driving the best cars are clearly the best drivers,

Fascinating how drivers who are losing against an stronger team mate are suddenly becoming "mediocre".

Well, considering the situation explained in the poll text (designated P1 driver at the fastest team, and for some reason Mercedes decided to hire Dumbo the Clown as the second driver), I'd go with pretty much any of the more experienced drivers.

Rosberg never looked anything than mediocre. already earlier in his career. Not just against Hamilton, also against Webber etc

Not a viewer of the 2009-2011 seasons then? For a poster who started off complaining about assumptions based on nothing, you are making a lot of anecdotal claims yourself.

There is someone. his name is Fernando Alonso.
Rookie Ham at least equaled him in the same machinery already in 2007, and Ham is a much improved driver since then.

Ok I will concede that Lewis is much improved driver than he was.... And he would perhaps be beating Fernando by a small margin if they had faced off again.
