Interesting, I guess I assumed that if you got the mechanical flag you had to respond immediately as the car had been deemed dangerous, hadn't realised there was a period of laps in which to respond.

I'm looking for the precise regs for FE, but I have found this in the meantime:

30.19 Animals, except those which may have been expressly authorised by the Organisers for use by security services, are forbidden in the pit area and on the track and in any spectator area.

Looks like that cat will be banned from future events, unless it was an FIA official.

Appendix H to the FIA International Sporting Code, section 2.4.4.1

Black flag with an orange disc 40 cm in diameter

This flag should be used to inform the driver concerned that his car has mechanical problems likely to endanger himself or others and means that he must stop at his pit on the next lap. When the mechanical problems have been rectified to the satisfaction of the chief scrutineer, the car may rejoin the race.

Virgin are massively disappointing for the second season in a row. Renault look dominant.

Exciting race, a lot of battles

Could be worse.... NextEv! Virgin showed reasonable pace in qualifying and good race pace. Providing they can sort out the random locking issues and improve the efficiency they should be near the front. Without the lock and ridiculous amounts of lift and coast they would have been challenging for a podium. Sam Bird tonked the entire field last year in Malaysia and if he's able to reproduce that pace then we should at least see them in a podium battle.

Fun.

But.

FCY? BMW are paying to supply an iwhatever safety car. Use it! Bunch up the field, create a better show.

That would make it IndyCar without Sunoco fuel!!!

EDIT: really enjoyed the race. The eDams cars seem to go really well, so at least Prost is so error-prone that we didn't have total eDams domination.

Interesting to see that all the "big names" Prost, Senna, Piquet, and Villeneuve were classified at the very bottom...

I felt this was a very strong race from Heidfeld. Mahindra doesn't seem to really have the pace to challenge for podiums (which I guess will be confirmed in the next races - Senna was nowhere pace wise as far as I can judge), so it was to keep that podium. The last laps were quite tough - almost feared a similar scenario as last year.

Very much agree with you. I really don't understand this current trend of championships having virtual safety or whatever. In long distance races like WEC, fair enough, it probably makes sense. But I don't feel like it has a place in sprint racing. Motorsport is a sport, yes, but it's also a form of entertainment. The simple fact is a safety car restart usually brings far more excitement than FCY or VSC.

But I guess that could spark its own topic.

A safety car should never EVER be used to provide entertainment. That is not why it exists. Any use of it for entertainment purposes rather than for safety reasons is unsporting and garbage.

And anyway they can figure out how to avoid using it should be taken advantage of. Virtual safety car is a fantastic idea. Not properly mastered and not ideal in all circumstances, but it's progress.

Ahh great race, I was afraid that this second season would feel a little underwhelming, without the benefit of novelty value and still very much evolving, but it is good to see that this series is just so enjoyable.

I am still amazed at how many things Agag and others got right at the first try.

I just hope field will be a little more leveled as the season goes on. I don't want no "It's Buemitime!"

Thoroughly enjoyable, despite the Buemi domination!

People who won't sleep well tonight... Piquet, de Silvestro.

Pit strategy seemed to play a huge role this time... no way would Turvey and Berthon scored points otherwise, but good on them.

Underwhelming showing by Villeneuve, kind of expected.  I hope he picks it up in the races to come.

Loic Duval impresses me more and more.  He finished last season strong, and another good showing today.  Yet he gets no love in the Fanboost.  I voted for him!

JEV's star is beginning to tarnish a bit.  He qualifies well, but his race craft seems to lack in Formula E.  Bad mistake in qualifying too, this time.  Very different performance from his team mate, who seemed to tear it up during the race.   Simona also better start showing what she can do.  Bin it once?  Shame on you.  Bin it twice?  Come on!

Prost's black flag... I feel it was unnecessarily messing with the outcome of the race.  Yes, his wing was skewed, but it's a bit presumptuous to assume it'll actually come OFF.  Nico was keeping pace with the car in front of him, and it would have been a great recovery drive.  I feel he was robbed of a podium here.

Good to see Heidfeld on the BEIJING podium!

Interesting that Dragon hauled a lot more points than the team whose drivetrain they're using!

Very pleasing that every team that started the race ended up scoring (although thanks to Abt's penalty).  Is it just me, or is Daniel Abt the most penalized driver in history?? :stoned:

Cats are very sensitive to high-pitched noises. Formula E is probably like a Top Fuel dragster to them.

This was more full course yellow luck more than anything - but still shows how staying one lap longer can make a lot of difference.

The brilliant thing is that the splits were in the same place as last year. So, across the entire weekend:

Beijing 2014

S1 - 35.671 (Senna, FP2)

S2 - 32.972 (Tung, FP2)

S3 - 32.379 (di Grassi, FP2)

Beijing 2015

S1 - 31.831 (Buemi, SP)

S2 - 33.615 (Buemi, FP1)

S3 - 31.417 (Buemi, SP)

Difference

S1 - 10.7% (chicane removed)

S2 - 2.0% (second chicane tightened)

S3 - 3.0% (no difference)

Difficult to tell just how much faster the cars are year-on-year, although based on the last split, could be a few seconds per track.

We'll see in Putrajaya, were the track is set to remain the same as last year. (Wich isn't a bad thing, as it was one of the most interesting imho)

Some news, they will test seatbelt sensors from next race, aiming to eliminate the minimum pit stop time thing.
We can expect from Race 3 to go that way, with drivers literally jumping at speed from the car to another. The faster you get into the 2nd car the

They've improved dramatically their Youtube & Facebook channels too, lots of videos.

A fair start to the season.  Track looked better than before, but that may be because of all the serious poor ones that followed it last season.

Why have some teams gone for 5 speed gearboxes when they didn't seem to bring even the smallest advantage?

The commentators said that the 5-gear teams use 4 in Beijing, but will use the fifth gear on circuits later this season with longer straights.... which left me wondering: are there any straights that are considerably longer?

Maybe they developed 5 speed gearboxes already with the future seasons and more power in mind.

In the current calendar there aren't tracks with huge straights.
Putrajaya has an ok one, Long Beach too but nothing huge, we still have to see Mexico, Berlin (it will change completely it seems) & Paris.

Next year Hong Kong is set to be the fastest circuit with a veeeeery long main straight.

That front wing bodywork that is covering the front tyres are so ugly to watch, aswell as the backcover of the rear tyres. Ugh theyngot to change that it looks so lame what would otherwise be beautiful open wheelers.

Another entertaining Formula E race. For all the ridiculousness of Fan Boost, swapping cars halfway through a race and the slow speeds, the racing is actually quite good.

That was a good race. Lots of action but no bonehead moves, although they never showed the incident that took Villeneuve out.

Buemi was on another level, well done!

I was also pleased that the cars appeared faster to the viewer. It will be interesting to see how gearbox strategies play out over the season.

That was a good race. There was a lot of action and overtaking.

Buemi was great, Prost was unlucky, happy to see Heidfeld on podium.

Da Costa apologized for taking out JVil. Said he was tinkering with knobs on his steering wheel and forgot to brake.

just watched the race on youtube very good race thought for sure the Dragon cars were going to collide into each other. Pretty outstanding that Buemi could I think go 2 sec quicker at times if i herd the commutators right.

There was an in-car sequence with someone using four gears chasing someone with one gear and making no impression on the gap at all.  Which suggests that gears may not be any help and will perhaps be something more to go wrong.
