But I mean if it was so wet in practice that the session were red flags and there was zero laps done before sunday
Doesnt matter. And they have anyway no time left in the shedule. They are happy enough if they get a quali and race.

This is getting annoying. First Sochi now Austin, it would surprise me if the weather followed the F1 circus to Mexico.
Dont forget Suzuka ;)

Can anyone tell me the last time we had a wet FP1,2,3/Q1,2,3 and a dry race?

I don´t expect much from this GP (apart from a perhaps cancelletion of the whole event.) Safety comes first !
Driving in the rain isn't particularly more dangerous though, the chance you off is just a bit higher but unless they put a tractor on the track the drivers will be fine. Besides that, if safety is their first priority they should scrape the whole parc ferme regulation in those circumstances

Change of plan. As the weather is forecast to be getting worse later, Romain will now drive P1, I will do P2 if it's not a washout.
Posted 23 October 2015 - 14:32
Even with the best wet weather tyres racing delays can be expected due to lack of visibility, this has often been the case, with drives saying the circuit conditions (grip and lack of rivers and aquaplaning) are fine.
Posted 23 October 2015 - 14:32
Rain's stopped for now. @alex_wurz, who raced in wet here last year, says track has plenty of grip in wet but there's "a lot of aquaplaning"
It's going to get wet later today. But one team insider said just now: "Wait until tomorrow. It's going to get worse. A lot worse"
Posted 23 October 2015 - 14:40
Not sure why you're puzzled. Tomorrow is forecast to be quite a bit worse than today by the sounds of it.
Re the schedule, doesn't matter about the schedule in terms of support races, they'd always be the first to get sessions/races cancelled if it meant fitting in space for quali on a Sunday or something similar. The F1 will always take priority.
Re visibility, I struggle to buy that argument in the sense that they raced in conditions where you basically couldn't see anything at all years ago, yet nowadays they complain about visibility when yeah it may not be great but isn't as bad as in the past (plus they usually leave it until the cars are more or less ready to switch to inters anyway before starting a session/bringing the SC in etc.

They only need qualy and race to go by the rules. But who knows what they will come up with.

Charlie has been known to halt proceeding on the grounds of visibibility or lack there of, even with the cars trundling round on inters.

I'm sure I've heard drivers say in the past that they judge more where the other cars are by listening to them, as they can't really see much.... so I guess they can't do that as well with the new quiet engines

I think Saturday is almost guaranteed wet. We might see a Sunday morning quali, likely still in slightly wet conditions. Race will be a super green track with potential for intermittent showers.

Because in Japan they can drive the ambulance to the nearby hospital quickly. Remember Jules?
What's the situation at this venue?

The strongest storm in recorded planetary history is pointed at the race. It's expected to maintain much of it's energy going into Texas sunday morning.
I think it will take a miracle for the race to happen. The weather in the states has gone completely haywire, I have friends in South Carolina that got 24 inches of rain in 12 hours last week - and this thing has 245 mph gusts.
Do the teams run CFD analysis for 200 mph headwinds......?
/ seriously, if this thing dumps as much water as the storm that hit S.C. that alone will be a major disaster. Throw in winds and you'd better be considering getting out of there before Sunday I would think. State EMS will be over run.
// the F1 circus will have trouble getting out I would think, pretty much the perfect storm for F1.

Raining at my house right now. Wow. I have to tell y'all, I've been out and about in a lot of bad weather as a firefighter, but that storm out there today was one of the craziest storms I've been involved with...Everything was fine, if very humid, through FP1 and I was thinking we might get through the day unscathed. I was at T11 when FP1 ended, and I started walking to the Grand Plaza to see what was going on. It's started raining about half way there, and about the time I got to T12, the rain got heavier, so I sought shelter. I was hanging out under the T12 bleachers with a bunch of other folks until that ended. Then the second shower hit & delayed FP2. For that one I was under the T15 bleachers getting soaked even under there with a pancho on. They ran us out of there during a lull in the storm & I went to a tent & stood with some more folks when the 3rd wave hit. Stood there a good twenty minutes, then it stopped again and I found out FP2 was officially canceled, so I decided to start making my way over to the Main GS & then hopefully on to my car. About half way between T19 & 20 The biggest storm of the day hit with a great suddenness & I was caught out in the open. Unbelievably heavy rain, the likes of which I'm not sure I've ever seen, driven by high winds, maybe 60+ mph. The crazy thing was how long the winds were sustained at that speed, along with even stronger bursts -- like 15-20 straight minutes of this craziness. I found a food trailer to hide behind because at one point the rain was hitting me so hard I thought it had started hailing. Then the trailer started making weird sheet metal flapping noises on the roof, & the girls working there came bailing out and into their car, scared shitless. People were running everywhere, but there wasn't any shelter nearby to go to. I found a cargo van to hide behind until it passed. It was pretty surreal. I've always kinda been apprehensive about being caught out like that out there, but I wasn't even way out in the hinterlands. I was about a 1/4 mile or so from the Grand Plaza, and there was really nowhere to go. Worst storm I've ever been caught out in like that. It was insane. /csb. I haven't heard anyone talking about the violence of today's storm other than just the heavy rain. Any of y'all hear about it?

Real time Austin weather radar GMT
Tad. Geeky. Maybe
I use that radar almost daily, and the NOAA one.

Apparently there were major problems with cars getting stuck in unpaved lots, leading COTA to serve up some big changes for tomorrow...
Posted 24 October 2015 - 03:56
Well, apparently there is more rain bearing on Texas for the weekend.
Hurricane Patricia hit land already and now "only" Cat4... Expected to dump rain like crazy all the way over there.

Not a good sign...

The rain from Patricia won't be in TX for a few days. This is a different front, it's quite large in and of itself. I doubt they'll be able to get much if anything done on Sat.

Do any other sports have press conferences and media interviews with the owners, managers and participants where the main topic is always how cr@p the sport is and how much it needs to change?
I'm starting to feel like an utter fool for wasting my weekends (and cash every year at silverstone) on this sport when clearly nobody who is involved thinks it is any good.
