So, three races to go, 75 points to play for and 4 points separate the two drivers in Vettel's favor (251 to 247). So far, both have racked up 12 podium finishes, distributed as follows:

1st places

Rosberg 3 (Spain, Monaco, Austria)

Vettel 3 (Malaysia, Hungary, Singapore)

2nd places

Rosberg 7 (Australia, China, Canada, Great Britain, Belgium, Japan, United States)

Vettel 3 (Monaco, Italy, Russia)

3rd places

Rosberg 2 (Malaysia, Bahrain)

Vettel 6 (Australia, China, Spain, Great Britain, Japan, United States)

But who will bring home the second place overall?

Want Vettel, think Rosberg.

I'm convinved that if its needed to Mercedes will help Nico to secure the 2nd place. They don't want to finish 1st and 3rd, they want the whole jackpot. Question is of course whether Ferrari is competitive (probably just Abu Dhabi) and if Rosberg will need to change his PU again. Reliability could also be decisive.

Most people won't give a hoot.

I'd prefer Vettel.

Vettel deserves it more. But I think Rosberg's gonna get P2.

Those 2nd and 3rd place statistics tell it all. Rosberg is far better placed and more likely to secure 2nd at the end of the season. Has way better car. Not much else to it. He'd be way ahead right now if not for some bad luck anyways. It's not like Vettel has legitimately been equal or more competitive than him all season.

I'm sure Rosberg will finish second and that he will be given full support by Hamilton now that he has won the title and them being old friends and all.

I don't know what sort of support Lewis can offer, because there is no way he would or Mercedes would ask him to give a race win (assuming he is in such a position) to Nico, simply for Nico to take second in the championship.

I'm hoping Vettel. He's pulling much more out of his Ferrari than Rosberg does out of his rocketship.

Vettel has a good chance of coming runner up. He is likely to start #3 on the grid and given Nico's poor starts, the Merc advantage could be neutralized by the time they get to the first corner. Also remember that Nico is due a grid drop for a likely engine change.

Nico's morale would be low too after being beaten so convincingly this year and I wont be surprised if Vettel and Nico actually make contact in one of the remaining races. Nico has been hung out to dry and feels aggrieved and Vettel has stated he should have been aggressive with Nico in the last race.

My bet is on Vettel to keep his nose ahead by the end of 19 races and Nico to flounder more than he already has.

Irrelevant, this is a dress rehearsal for bigger things to come from Seb and Ferrari.

I'm amazed Rosberg has managed to be behind Vettel as it is. Did Rosberg got a few extra DNFs due to reliability, I kinda haven't been saving that much space in my memory for the events of this season? Either way I do know Vettel's been driving the socks off that Ferrari this season, extremely impressive season after last year's surprise slight underperformance (of course a lot of that could be due to team-mates making him look better/worse, but Vettel's been amazingly consistent).

Rosberg had 1 dnf more. Not a big difference

With Rosberg and Seb finishing 2nd and 3rd usually it is quite a big difference considering it's only 3 points Nico can get back on Seb per race if he doesn't beat Lewis.  It would take 6 races to get back those 18 points if you see what I mean.

I'm not sure i've been very clear here though.  :well:

Yeah, Ive got what you mean. But stil Nico would just have around 15 points more than Vettel. Thats stil close and not the gap he should have driving a Merc

Without beating Lewis semi regularly the points gap was never going to be huge though because Seb is usually 3rd if he keeps it out of the barriers so only loses 3 points to Nico.

His inability to beat Lewis is what's costing him in the points gap to Seb, well that and Hungary and Italy.  Monza especially as like you pointed out earlier it's likely to cost him a grid penalty in one of these last 3 races on top of the 18 points he lost to Seb. Double whammy.

I think that DNF in Italy could decide it.

Then again, Seb has already taken an engine penalty.
