The first Mexican GP since 1992 saw rather unusual eventfull practice sessions and a good qualifying session - witnessed overall by incredible 201329 spectators. For the 4th time in a row Nico Rosberg secured the pole position ahead of his team mate. Start will be obviously crucial with the long run into turn 1. Due to only having one DRS detection point, but two DRS zones overtaking might be well possible. Besides turn 1 and 4, turn 12 before the stadium section might be also a spot for action. Potential rainfalls might spice up the whole thing as the asphalt is anyway slipperly already. After watching the practice sessions a safety car will probably be inevitable. Everything is geared up for a great race! Who will follow Nigell Mansell as the latest winner of the Mexican GP?

Oh, and meanwhile Jenson Button has to start from....somewhere....

On my phone it's just gone up from 60% to 70% chance of rain/thunderstorms near the city arriving around the race start. It's going to be sunny until atleast 12 local time though

Or spitting on the grid already confusing teams about what tyres to start on and forcing some to make gambles

Everything is looking good for a good race. Don't ask me why but this track reminds of AVUS track.

The long run to the first corner and Nico potentially wanting to show that he can't pushed around will make the first corner very exciting. :D

Agree with that, I do not think Lewis should expect anything but hitting a car if he try his Austin shenanigans once again. If happens will pee Toto of to no end, I am ready with the pop-corn and soda.

Be it dry, think Vettel can challenge Mercs for a win by preserving the softs longer. Be it rainy, RBR will be up there, as they were the only ones getting their best lap in on their first try, which implies that they'll work their tires better in the wet. Not to mention their  usual great form in the wet.

Either way, hope someone will challenge the Mercs,

I'm very interested to see how the race will unfold, or more specifically, how the circuit will lend itself to on-track battles.

It'd be great for the Mexican crowd, who has been very welcoming the past few days, to see Pérez do well.

I expect a very exciting start if it's dry.

The run to the first corner is nearly 1 km long, so even the 6-7th on the grid could leapfrog anyone in case of a great start.

All the expectation about a first corner crash among the Mercs almost guarantees it'll be a dull, uneventful procession. Further down the field expect the usual bits of flying body work.Desperately hoping for rain,

One thing I did notice from playing F1 2015 last night is that its very easy to make an overtake into T1, but then get compromised heading into the second straight out of T3.

This might be true, but in this case probably just for the start. We have two DRS zones, both on these two straights, but we just have one detection point. This means that if I pass someone at turn 1 I will have DRS on the straight tu turn 4 to defend myself.

You mean Kobaybashi ?

I couldn't help but feel sorry for the people he worked over at Suzuka ..one of the drivers (victims) twice i think if memory serves me correctly.. They werent the cleanest overtakes and im sure the aggrieved felt as if they were being mugged...

Oh well ...

It got the job done though !!!  :rotfl:

Really makes no difference at this stage where Kimi starts nor finishes in races does it now? Not unless Ferrari think its important Sebastian bags 2nd in the WDC; in which case he might be usefull as a loose cannoned rear gunner interfering with Rosberg!

Despite forecasts saying the race should be fine on F1 sites etc, it's been pretty steady/consistant since earlier in the week that there'll be a thunderstorm in the afternoon of race day on weather underground.

Was supposed to go fishing earlier in the week but a raging thunderstorm was forecast so we didn't, and then the thunderstorm didn't actually come (dammit) but credit to the site, in that it did keep up to date and adjusted the forecast early on.  Many hours before.  Now it's only a few hours out from the race and it's saying 100% chance of 2pm.

Have been scared to even talk about it, hoping not to jinx it.

Two wet races in a row would be nice.  Another false alarm (like my fishing day) would suck!

Ferrari don't have anything to gain with Kimi now, and every new engine will cost them money. What's the point?

The engine you are using in qualifying is also used in the race. Unless you have a failure you are not allow to change it (parc ferme). So this engine was not only for practice obviously. They  changed the engine in Austin, it would make no sense to use an old engine again in that sense. It was the new engine from Austin which got damaged here, thats why they changed it again.

Engine failure and engine damage are not the same thing. The cause of the FP3 issue was not necessarily an engine failure , but the subsequent fire on the car could very well cause engine damage the same way it caused the damage of the gearbox.

Any damage which prevents it from being used is a failure in my eyes...

How about he looks at what happens when you have races in countries that give a stuff.

Probably securing P4? Probably because out of fairness to the driver? Or because they want to score every point possible as they're not exactly on a tight budget?

Looks like pretty much everyone will go with a one stopper..the mediums seem to last for an eternity..Except for Raikkonen perhaps, really dont know what Ferrari will try with him..perhaps a long first stint on the mediums and then a sprint to the end on the softer compound..

Also depends on potential safetycars ofcourse, I have a feeling we might see some of them today.
