I have four questions about plumbing and wiring in the cockpit of a Lotus 49 (’68) that I hope someone(s) can answer.  And one more about the battery.

It’s some months since I’ve posted questions here related to a model I’m making, nearing the end now.  It’s modeled on the car Hill drove at Jarama in ’68.  My information about this car comes from many photos of the various versions I’ve collected from the web plus help offered by Michael Oliver and Peter Morley in particular and two books.  As the race in Spain was  shortly after returning from down under, I’m using a few pictures from the Tasman series races as a guide to some details too.  Unfortunately there are gaps.  These may seem like trivial details, but are things I’d like to try and get right.

1) Throttle cable.  I’ve some photos of a non-period car (in relatively poor condition) towards the foot box end, showing it coming from the pedal and along the side.  Is this correct?  If so, where did it ‘disappear’ to and at what point?  What was the routing before it comes out near the top of the rear bulkhead?  Under the seat?

2) Tube on top right of the cockpit.  This may or may not be a related question.  Pictures show a metal-to-rubber tube curving round the top of the cockpit at the driver’s right shoulder.  It seems more likely that this was a conduit for a one or more cables than fuel feed-related?

3) Tubing for mechanical fuel and oil pressure gauges.  This runs from behind the dashboard into the left side of the monocoque.  Was it connected to fittings (A/N fittings??) on the cockpit side, as one photo in Ian Wagstaff’s book appears to show, or did the tubes simply disappear into a hole in the side, along with the rev counter cable?

4) Wires bundled from rear of dash to bulkhead and engine.  These run into a tube under the seat on right.  How were they routed between the dashboard and floor pan?  Some photos show a flattish vertical aluminium ‘cover strip’ fastened to the cockpit side just behind and below the dashboard.

4) Any information about the Varley battery would be appreciated, such as colour of the body (battery black?!) and filler caps.  I’ve found only one period picture of a Varley battery, which I believe was a similar type.  It is attached to the left side of the gearbox of a V12 Ferrari.  Unfortunately, it’s in B &W.

Any and all thoughts/information would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Mark

PS I've sorted and classified the photos I found on the web.   It took many hours of 'research' to locate these.  They are classified in categories like "cockpit" "engine" and in more detail, such as "fuel pumps", "oil tank".  If I can help anyone with photos that are in the public domain, let me know.  Mark

Hi Mark

Can't help you with the cockpit plumbing/wiring on the 49s, but my father used to be part of a Monocoque Formula racing car manufacturing concern in Australia from 64 to 68, nevertheless, they did use Varley batteries and  they were clear/opaque/"white-ish".

Cheers

James

Thank you for this information.  It helps to explain why the small visible portion of the battery in a period cutaway drawing that appeared in Quattroruote (Michael Oliver's book) has a white body and why the battery on the back of the period Ferrari is light coloured in a B & W photo.

What was the engine capacity of the Monocoque Formula cars?  Did they race in the Tasman series?

Regards

Mark

The ones I'm mostly interested in were Elfin Monos that ran as Australian National Formula 1.5 {Litre}   (ANF1.5)   cars.

Elfin Racing Cars did make Tasman and F5000 cars, but only after my father left!

Doug

Thanks so much for the link.  I didn't know about this archive and will be spending more time there in future.  The image you sent as a link is intriguing.  I've not seen any photos of a 49B of this vintage with a partial 'V' (?) oil tank in front.  In fact the whole front-end arrangement is interesting.  It looks like the old-size Serck radiator, with water pipe connection moved to the left edge and what appears to be a flat oval oil (vapor?) tank at chassis floor level.  I'll try to make sense of the cable/pipes visible through the hatch.

I'm delighted to hear from you given your involvement with the sport at that time and, if any pics turn up of 49s insides, would be pleased to hear from you again!

Kind regards

Mark
