I have frequently come across a slot car (or images thereof, rather) of this car on the interweb - but has anyone ever seen this car in real life or seen images of it?

I saw Roger compete in the 1970 CanAm round at Mosport.  I don't specifically remember the car but for a certainty, it wasn't the blue shade of colour indicated as per this slot car.  Roger's typical colouring was a shade of orange somewhat darker than the factory McLarens.  There is a b&w image of the car at that Mosport race here...

Regretably, no image on that site of his car at Road Atlanta.

Agree with this assessment. McCaig was a regular runner at Mosport and Watkins Glen and I remember his cars as orange.

This doesn't mean the Atlanta blue livery is incorrect, as the car could have had a one off paint job. The link above lists the car as orange with Calgary as sponsors, but again this is not proof.

I did find that McCaig was a director of United Westburne Industries so the sponsorship is likely, just need to see a photo.to confirm.

That link is for John Cordts, not Rodger McCaig.

Not sure if a fb account is needed to see the photo but if you can't, the car is orange.

Thanks, that is evidence enough for me, photo is available and is the usual orange.

There are many examples of that model on the net. We have established it never ran in that livery at Atlanta 1970. But it could have been painted over and run somewhere else, or perhaps painted and never ran anywhere.

The fact that McCaig was a director of United Westburne Industries, makes such sponsorship possible. I doubt if Vanquish would have made the livery up. Maybe someone gave them outlines.of a new livery, which never materialized. This warrants further looking for a race shot with that paint scheme.

Maybe the photo's a negative. ;-)

This is M8C 70-03, the same car that William Wonder drove later.

As for John Cordts, he drove a least three races in Roger McCaig's McLarens in 1969, two in the M6B and one in the Formula 5000 M10A.

Thanks Vince. Yup, I've got a fair bit of research together on John Cordts' drives, including the ones in McCaig's cars. So, are you saying you have seen 70-03 in baby blue - or orange?

No, I've never seen 70-03 in blue.  Maurice McCaig, brother of the late Roger McCaig, now has 70-03.  I sent him the link to this thread with the photos of the slot car.  His response:

"That’s quite amazing,, with Rogers name on it etc,,Don’t know why the Blue Color as it was never Blue

Cheers

maurice"

also

"I do own 70 03 but didn’t know it was Maroon when Bill Wonder owned it…

Its now in The McLaren Orange colors"

Nice to learn that Maurice McCaig is still with us. His son, Mark, briefly drove...(edit; errr...; drove briefly)...in Formula Atlantic in the late 1970's.

Seems like Vanquish did make it up. Maurice McCaig would certainly know.the details.

This begs the question, Is Vanquish required to get permission, pay royalties for the use of Roger McCaig's name on their slot car? Wouldn't his heirs have to OK the product including livery?
