One of the classics of the racing season is again here, the Macau Grand Prix!
The events start tomorrow, or rather today as it's already Thursday in Macau. The schedule can be found here.
The F3 race gathers the best F3 talent to race against each other. The race features the top 3 of both the European Championship and the All-Japan Championship. The European champion Felix Rosenqvist is attempting to win the Macau GP for the second time in his career.
The inaugural FIA GT World Cup will take place at Macau, featuring Mercs, McLarens, Audis, Bentleys, Porsches, Astons, and a sole Ferrari. Unlike most sports car races, this will have only one driver per car. Qualifying will take place on Friday, qualifying race on Saturday, and the real race on Sunday.
TCR has replaces WTCC as the touring car series at the Guia Race of Macau. Like WTCC used to have, TCR will have two races with a short break on Sunday.
And maybe the most spectacular race of the weekend, the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix will take place on Saturday.
F3 and bikes will have their first qualifying sessions tomorrow morning. I'm gonna check if there's a almost semi-official looking Nigerian like last year showing all the action. For more official coverage, BT Sports will show F3, GT, and bike races.

Not sure if the other stream also continues.

staying on the subject of flags and F3 last time we saw F3 was in a messy Hockenheim race 3 when people forgot not to race under SC and overtook under yellow, i wonder if there be a quick telling off from the last time we saw these F3 cars in action plus its the old add a hour just in case of a block track during the car races. how about show last year blockage of the F3 cars to remind people

Red flag for the bike session. A rider is down and seems to be injured.
It was Russ Mountford. He's conscious with no head injuries, but he fractured his pelvis.

Bikes? I mean, BIKES!
Yeah i know, it's nothing new to me either but it's just incredible that they are running bikes at Macau.
I want to see Rossi and Marques race in Monaco!

One of these events, along with Bathurst, that I'd really like to see. But the time difference makes it rather difficult, and I do enjoy my sleep, particularly at a weekend.

There was a motorcycle GP in Monaco once. I think it was 1948/49 ish. It was a one-off. I don't know if its demise was entirely down to the fatal accident, but it didn't help.

It seems like you can't watch footage of bike racing from the 50s and 60s without seeing at least one street race from unidentified southern European city...

Big old crimp for Couto there.
I went to Macau in 2008, but totally missed the bikes unfortunately. I saw a few helmets zipping past over the top of the armco on the Saturday afternoon, but thought i'd get to see the race on the Sunday. That WAS the race. Oops.

I love Macau! Been there 3 times working with the bikes. It's just an AWSOME event. A Shame many of the car guys don't attend the prize ceremony though, and a shame theres no WTCC this year

Martin Jessopp is on pole for the bike race, 1.1 seconds ahead of Michael Rutter with Peter Hickman in third. Ian Hutchinson and John McGuinness round out the top 5.

Rosenqvist on pole again. Please give the man a GP2 seat!
The guy has over 160 F3 races under his belt. Unless he's bringing huge money, nobody is going to be looking at him.

Re: Rosenquist. It just shows how stupid motorsport is, and that talent is not the biggest factor in getting chances in higher classes . If he had been a Brit och an American, he had already driven a couple seasons in F1. However, I do believe he will get his chance in GP2 next year with Prema.

It doesn't.
Last year was Rosenqvist 8th season in car racing and his 4th in the F3 euroseries. He wins 1 race. Car racing rookie Max Verstappen wins 10 races and F3 rookie Ocon wins 9 races. Felix isn't F1 material.

He is 24 years old and needed 5 years to win F3, I think GP2 would be already more than enough for now, based on his talent/achievements....

Unfortunately i think you are right. But it would be nice to see him get a chance in GP2.
I heard a long interview with him some weeks ago where he told us that the current F3 car where the tires are more or less indestructible is not really his style.
And this years Prema-car was a struggle to drive and it took a while for him to adapt. He likes a car/class where he has to manage the tires. Like Gp2 or F1.
I think he will be in Gp2 next year. It's dead silence from everyone in the "circus", and to me that indicates that something is already done. But that could be a false hope.
Back to Macau..
I have just watched the incident between Giovinazzi and Juncadella and think that the penalty for Giovinazzi is a bit harsh.
They where almost side by side and neither of them drove like there was a car alongside. Stupid moves from both considering this was only the qualifying race.

Giovinazzi wants the pen drop but normally you do not appeal drive thoughs therefore i think that pen will stand

I honestly think there's not many years left for the bike race, it's just an insane risk, sooner or later there'll be an unfortunate incident again and they'll finally end the event. This race is dangerous enough for cars.Rosenqvist and Juncadella are ruining the interest on the F3 race a bit, I get that they are good drivers and that being at the front at Macau takes always a lot of merit, but they're veterans compared to everyone else really.
The competitors that choose to enter the Macau GP typically race at events where fatalities are more likely to occur.

1. Why TCR and not more presitgious WTCC?
2. Racing bikes there seems insane.

1. Why TCR and not more presitgious WTCC?
I remember reading it was something like the former WTCC promoter founded TCR and he made Macau choose TCR over WTCC.
First TCR race starting now.

did the camera catch the crash that brought out red flag number 3 of Sunday, i turned on and saw the race suspend logo when i turned on BT Sports, also people moaning about a race ending stoppage. when its go past 2/3rd of laps then FIA can declare a race..

so we need someone at the track that had recorded the crash and upload to youtube, the above touring car crash reminded me of at the very same turn of a WTCC crash with the same outcome, at least the cameraman caught that one
