RIP Guy Buckingham

B: Oxfordshire, 11 February, 1921

D: Haddenham: 18 November, 2015

Guy, with a life that included clock making, WW2 RAF, lifetime band trumpeter, motor racing starting in the days of the 750 Motor Club,  moving to NSW, Australia, founder of Nota Engineering in 1956, constructor of well over 100 Nota open wheel, sports and closed racing cars before returning to England in 1971 had a very interesting life indeed.

The original form of Nota Engineering involved the whole-hearted support of first wife, Barrie, mother of first son Chris and Michael Martin.  Michael was with Guy in England and came to Australia with the family. Barrie is deceased from many years ago.  Chris has continued the business to this day

Returning to England,

Guy married Jean with whom he had son Lee and daughter Lynne.

Guy remained fully healthy through almost all of his 94 years, having only recently given up on his band trumpeting and playing with vintage aircraft.

May we all have lives as interesting and productive as his.  I will leave this write up hopefully as a seed for which others can provide in fill.

Regards

Sad news indeed, from a Nota owner ( car no. 29 ) We should all be grateful for the work he did in producing such a wonderful and relatively inexpensive range of racing cars.

I will always remember him from his visit back to Australia in 2002.

Indeed, there are many who got to race because he put his energies into designing and building cars locally that would otherwise have had to come from overseas...

He also spawned other constructors, Brian Rawlings perhaps being the main one as he broke away and built his Bulants. And Wal Hadley with his Safaris.

RIP Guy

Without Guy and Michael and Nota Engineering there would be far fewer people who could afford to race in those days. Notas were generally inexpensive, most of them worked, and most of them worked well. Variation in finish, performance, and design was often attributable to owners' skill/knowledge level, because most cars were a result of a shared build between Nota Engineering and that particular owner. Guy and Michael produced many racing cars ( over 250), and many road cars, starting in the UK with perhaps the first Australian-built car Col James monoposto Barclay MG. Just like bad drivers don't win races, so bad cars don't win races -- and Notas won lots. Even underpowered Notas gave plenty of bang for the buck and for the dollar. So many who couldn't afford to race did race. Those who wanted to work on racing cars did that work: Nota apprentices included Brian Rawlings, Dave Mawer, Harry Galloway, and more -- all smart car builders. Guy also had his own TV Show on motor racing, and publicized the sport there and in local newspapers. He was one of the Singer Car Club people who created Oran Park. And he had a wide range of interests

Playing the trumpet was just one of those. I still recall that trumpet echoing across the darkened water at Clareville ( where the Schroders had a beach house where we used to gather for parties). Guy could play a bit.

Thanks, Joe, for letting us know. My condolences to all Guy's family and friends.

Very sad to hear of Guys passing.  Nota's have been part of out family since 1967, and had my start in motor sport with dads car (chassis 45).  I met Guy at the Tribute to Nota at Oran Park in 2000 and something.

sad news.

The Fang was the object of my automotive lust.

Hmm, thinks ... how would one of those go with a Honda in the back ...
