Here's one for ya...

What do we, gentlemen and gentlewomen of this forum, collectively know about Can Am privateers and smaller teams, and their choices of colours and styles for their cars.

Being woefully hamstrung by my tedious predeliction for McLaren / Elva / Trojan, I can but quote a few example from said stable to get us started here...

E.g. Skip Scot and his metallic blue and red/white band, John Cordts and his forest green with red band, William Wonder and his glorious maroon cars, Low-tar and his silver livery, Jerry and his striking Nassau blue with white band etc...

Like I said, this is not a McLaren specific question - it's about time I learned a bit more about the Lolas and other wonderful machinery of the era! :)

I don't think it is by accident that most attractive liveries were found on the factory, or big budget teams.  Privateers were by definition running on a shoestring budget.  After purchasing  a car from Elva or Haas in a basic colour, often they lacked resources to give ii an original eye catching paint scheme.. One of the drivers commenting recently at a Vintage meet, said that the enormous horsepower took a fearful toll  on all components. Thus major rebuilds were necessary much more frequently than normal. This would again eat up private resources, leaving appearance somewhere down the line in priority..There were of course exceptions and you have pointed to some.

One of the best turned out cars I saw was the BRM 154 of George Eaton; this was entered by BRM not Eaton personally. Unfortunately looks didn't match with pace, but it was stunning to see.

I will search through my memory bank and on line sources to find a distinct livery.

Can't remember if I mentioned this, here, before but one of the things I find so interesting about Can Am - and that makes building models of this more interesting than, say, 80's F1 and beyond - is the diversity of colours and liveries.

I love the fact that you got some weird and wonderful colours, deep rich tones and metallics. Stuff you just didn't see in F1 (my other 'field' of interest). I actually think some of the privateers ran some of the classier turned-out cars.

That BRM is impressive indeed -  it features in the latest of two Can Am photo books by Model Factory Hiro / Joe Honda. I plugged it before on this forum and will do so again now! ;)

I tend prefer the clean simple liveries using fairly few plain colours and little embellishment, but one of the 'whackier' CanAm liveries that I thought worked well was the Oscar Kovaleski M8, with the slot track running around the upper body.

Yup I know the one you mean. I am building the M6B which had the Autoworld but not the slot cars running across it. It sold at auction in August, this car.

I thought that was the case but did not want to bias the enquiry - #67 doesn't appear in the records anywhere - not that I can find? RGDS RLT

 LolaT70 Mecom 1965.

This dramatic livery is from the first T70 to be imported to US. John Mecom was the distributer at the time; the car was driven mostly by Walt Hansgen.. The photo is after restoration and readied for dale by Fiskens, probably more pristine then when raced, I missed seeing it race, as Hansgen had an accident and DNS the 1965 Players 200. Mosport.

Great car - lovely zingy metallic blue... love the simple white nose and stripe. I dig it! :)

A livery need not involve 2 tone paint and elaborate stripes to be effective, I always liked UDT Laystall green apple paint scheme. .Predating Can Am a bit, this is the Moss Lotus 19, Can Grand Prix 1961

Ooh, a very 'off the era' colour I'd say... nice!

They also had a Ferrari GTO in the same colour, driven by Innes Ireland. A very distinctive GTO, lots of photos of this car on the net.

does any one have an idea as to the colour of green that was on Brucie's Zerex Spcl./Cooper Olds when he won the players 200 at Mosport in Canada, june 6th. 1964 ? do I remember that the car was referred to as the "Jolly Green Giant" I seem to remember some story, that the team needed to paint the car, and went to the local hardware and bought a couple of tins. I've seen assorted built scale models of this machine but the shade always varies. I was at that race, any colour (they are rare) photos I've seen it is hard to tell, film fades over the years. having some one build this car for me in 1/43.

Xerex Special Bruce McLaren

This is a photo from Mosport 1964, As I recall it was fairly dark green, but the real distinction was the stacks from the Traco-Olds motor. It was a neat car, should make an interesting project. By the way a model I viewed on the net did not look right at all, the green was much too light.

For me, nothing beats McLaren papaya. The current team would do itself a huge favor if it went back to that color for its F1 cars, instead of pressing on with that awful dull black.

Agreed. If F1 wants better days back, that's a good place to find them.

Eoin Young's great memoir McLaren Memories  has a colour photo of the Zerex Special at Brands Hatch, fall of 1964. By this time the car had been repainted, presumably with proper auto paint, still green but with a white central stripe. The stack exhausts had also been replaced with a dedicated system. The models I mentioned are based on a composite of the 2 paint schemes, but the Mosport car was plain garden gate green, no stripe. Let us have a look when it is completed.

Thanks so much. Tony Dean's victory is the answer to todays quiz. I hadn't realized the racing conditions were ideal, no rain, it makes his victory even more impressive.
