For those that can access the BBC website, a few nice photos have appeared...

I love the first one. Ron Flockhart's Connaught in the centre of the picture. Started 23rd on the eighth row of the grid - finished third....... Nostalgia at its very best!

I like the one with Denny Hulme sitting in his F1 Brabham having to wait behind a humble Mini to refuel.

Had already seen the one of Colin Vandervell, and showed it to him some time ago and again today. He is of course the one sitting on the back wheel. I think it's Brendan McInerney on the right. The girl is unknown and had anyway nothing to do with Colin! He says he still has the jacket and uses it for gardening, or perhaps for taking out the trash! The car belonged to the works.

That's a nice set of pictures. Does anyone know if there is a particular reason why they've appeared on the BBC News website today, there's nothing obvious in the text?

I was wondering that too, Ian. Auntie isn't usually known for giving plugs for books on the website - but the page does specifically mention their title 'Gasoline and Magic': TNFer Colbul1 gave it a thumbs up a couple of months ago

...I wondered if it might be Alan Jones. I thought Brendan McInerney was shorter than that - however, I'm not sure that Alan Jones would have worn white leather slip-ons.

The thing about these random extracts is you can pick up info that you won't get in even the most erudite tomes.  Who on earth is Erwin Sommerhalder?

Swiss hillclimber, mentioned in some earlier threads, eg:

Formula 1 class in hillclimbs

1952 Maloja hill-climb

and here are Barrie Hobkirk's thoughts on the car:

Dear Macca,
In late 1956 the Interim 250F numbered 2510 (a 1953 A6GCM fitted with a 1954 250F motor) was taken in by the Factory and refurbished. It was fitted with one of the engines used in the 'cast-asside' "Streamliner" 2518. When sold to Swiss Hervin Sommerhalder in November 1956, it carried the paperwork identifying it as 2518. No connection what-so-ever to 2512.
An all to typical Maserat story.
Cheers,
Barrie

Don't think he ever competed outside Switzerland but you'll find him in the entry list for the Erlen sports car race in 1949 in an MG TC. Owned various Masers including the ex-Mandirola 6C.

Is that actually Hulme or is it a mechanic sitting in the car?

Ah thanks!  I hadn't made the connection that "Gasoline and Magic" in the first caption was a book title.

I think it is Bev Bond, whose "original" Ensign is now up for auction with Bonhams I see.

Slightly baffled as to why the BBC website would be showing these images, but they are a strange organisation at best. More images if you click on the link at the bottom of the page if you haven't done so already...

Which link, please - there are about a million!

(And I don't want to end up on yet another pointless celeb page...)

On the link at the bottom of the page there is a picture labeled "1962 Cheshunt, Lotus factory — David Buxton’s Lotus Elite"

Did this car ever compete with the wobbly-web wheels, and were there others without wire wheels?

Looking at the F2 Register site and the F3 results, the meeting appears to be the October Shell Super Oil round, won by Jochen Mass in his Brabham BT35.

Is that Historic racer Richard Bond stood behind Vandervell at the back?

I had always hoped that Vandervell would write a book about his racing exploits, especially given his closeness to Andrew Marriott.  He was involved when racing in the UK and Europe was at its pinnacle in my view.

Of all the many, many pictures the Beeb could have chosen to illustrate the Apple / McLaren scenario in their Business section on their website today (22/09/2016) they chose a somewhat obscure illustration of Joe Bonnier in an M5A carrying no. 23!  No doubt someone will identify the race and year and report back. However, I am not complaining just surprised, so much better a picture from that era than that of a latter day machine.

Mind you, it does not surprise me - a few weeks ago the BBC News had a feature on the 100th anniversary of motor gun boats, torpedo boats and similar craft which first saw service in the first world war. One craft was shown launching a torpedo - unfortunately the ship shown at the receiving end of the attack by the Royal Navy craft was HMS Barham as she blew up whilst still underway having keeled over in the Mediterranean in 1941 after being torpedoed by U331.

863 RN personnel lost their lives on that ship that day. A truly insensitive blunder by someone in production.

I guess the Bonnier one was the cheapest they could get from Getty!

The Barham one was an awful clanger - they had a lot of emails about it and even apologised on Newswatch!

I was truly aghast when I saw the feature - so glad that many responded by complaining.

Yes, it was a bit of a surprise wasn't it? Bruce or Denny perhaps, but I didn't expect Jo Bonnier!  Vitesse is probably right, perhaps it was one of Getty's cheaper offerings, although it does remind me of the Motor Sport squabble some years back when the then editor (Andrew Frankel?) insisted on illustrating a major Brabham feature with a front cover shot of Hector Rebaque! An earlier editor (Matt ??) wrote to complain. I might have the details wrong, but I agreed with the complaint. Choosing a picture of Rebaque in his BT49 seemed bizarre, almost disrespectful.

Well found Tim.

I hope that the Beeb continue the trend and illustrate big Lotus stories with Pete Lovely in the 49, and Ferrari retrospectives with Giancarlo Martini in the 312T.  :drunk:

Sadly, I think that nowadays Bruce and Denny aren't any better known than Jo Bonnier anyway.

You're right. If only they'd all had the chance to appear on Strictly. Or Bake Off.
