Seems pretty obvious that the reason Merc wanted to keep it confidential is because they intend to go the same route, not that they necessarily want to stop Ferrari from doing it, but in doing so don't want the entire field to know that they're going to start doing it too.

And the tyre test?  Really???  :smoking:

I hate these political things in Formula 1. This is not fair for the other teams. Big teams try to use their political power to gain advantage from everything

They would temporary sack some of their engineers for a couple of months, send them to Stuttgart with a W06 to do as they wish.

Simply

1: Setup a shell company to design a race car for undiclosed series (it doesn't matter, as long as it is designed to F1 aero regulations)

2: Send your employees there, to conduct unlimited development (the company can still be based in your F1 offices, that doesn't matter  :D )

3: Bring your employees back to your F1 team, just in time to finalise your next F1 car

What a plan

Great idea, I think.

Good on Ferrari for taking the opportunity

No news from the FIA on the Mercedes enquiry re Haas, but Bernie just hinted to me that the rules on tech sharing will be tightened

Why do the words Horse, Barn, Door and Bolted come to mind?

FIA Stewards have decreed that a new team like Haas should follow wind tunnel rules etc as soon as its application is accepted

In other words Haas should have been following same restrictions as other teams all year

With the ruling, I wonder if Ferrari are still confident that they'll be able to match Mercedes next season. I'm willing to bet that they were counting on a lot of wind tunnel/throwing a lot of money at their aero over the winter test period to make that big step.

They would not have been allowed under the existing rules as the cut off point is the end of November when the entry list for the next year is announced.

Bottom line on FIA conclusion - Haas/Ferrari have to follow strict rules from now on, and no one can repeat how they operated this year

I'm pretty sure they started working on the 2016 car long time ago, so they must had abused that loop hole for quite a while.

I wonder if it backfired to Mercedes, it looks like they wanted to keep it confidential to they can abuse the same loophole like Ferrari did.

Like other teams, they will have had a 2016 car in the Wind Tunnel for a good number of months already, so they have profited from the rules interpretation as it was for all these months..

Toto seemed very happy with the clarification on the BBC (he more or less congratulated Ferrari on finding a loophole and exploiting it).

Mercedes complaining at FIA about Ferrari using more than the allowed 25 hours/week of windtunnel time via HaasF1.

That's quite an odd and sensationalist way to characterise the situation, as per the following document they're merely asking for clarification because Mercedes has its own plans lined up.
