...99 laps is quite a bit less than all the other teams....remember some other teams run 2 drivers sharing one car.....all the teams have done well over 100laps but only macca under 100.....also ericsson in 3rd....at least run without problem it seems which is positive....

cliff is the last thing i want...I want tyres that can be bullied with which drivers can attack to their satisfaction.
i know, there's always tyre saving aspect. Just normal tyres i'm talking about, like Bridgestone tyre, like Michlin tires, like goodyear tyres, like tyres in any comtemporary motorsport series except F1.

I think the aim is to produce tires that allow the drivers to attack for 10/11 laps, but then fall off a cliff forcing them to pit.

I think that is the best compromise, tires which give full performance but degrade quickly after a certain point.

Aren't they all testing different compounds, they don't know which compound, etc, et al?

Yes - different compounds (and also different constructions as Pirelli are still deciding which way to go, think that was from the autosport article posted earlier). As Sky put it though -

The new ultra-soft compound was tested for the first time, but all compounds were unmarked during the running, with the teams and the drivers in the dark over what rubber they were running. Nevertheless, race drivers will have been able to sense roughly what they were running.

(Some of the tyres were marked as you can see from photos)

There are 4 variations of the ultra soft tyre that no driver used before today, so everyone probably knew they were testing an ultra soft but unlikely they could tell which one.

The primary concern for Pirelli is ensuring the ultra-soft tyre works, with four variants overall to be tested as it tries to find the best solution.

"The ultra-soft is the real priority," added Hembery.

"We've four different proposals for the ultra-soft, but it will be completely blind for the teams so they won't know what we are looking at.

<Conspiracy theory mode>

So, if Pirelli knows, and the teams don't know, and if Pirelli sees that a certain car perform better with a certain ultrasoft, then by picking THAT ultrasoft, they are giving the advantage to the car they want....  :p

Or: A certain dominate team tested every single ultrasoft variant and Pirelli will choose that one where they performed worse ;)
