Nope, horsepower as well. The V6 turbos of the 80's.

I was at Montreal this year with my son and it great knowing I didn't have to worry about hearing damage. Past engines were just painful to the point of absurdity.

The V6 turbos of the 80s sounded good, in stark contrast to the raspy blowdryers we have now, but that debate has already been going on for 2 years in the thread devoted to engine sound.

As a counterpoint, I didn't go to Montreal this year for the first time since 1998 (not counting the canceled race in '09) and that choice was influenced in no small part by how utterly uninspiring these current engines are.

You can always head to the Aeroport and stand next to a jet engine to get your dose of hearing damage.  :p

Anyway this is off topic and as stated has been discussed ad infinitum elsewhere by a noisy minority of luddites, I gave up contributing to the thread a long time ago.

I guess you guys that enjoy the current hybrid powertrain note are the whispering technocrat majority then.

Just to dispel a myth that's prevalent on these forums, most of us who hate the current engines don't think the only solution is to go back to V10s or completely abandon the "green" push by the manufacturers. I don't need my ears to bleed, I just want to hear something unique and interesting that sounds powerful. The old turbos you mentioned from the 80s had that appeal, the current ones do not. We'll see if the exhaust changes and possible fuel flow increases in coming seasons make any difference. I certainly hope so...

"Todt and Ecclestone to get mandate for F1 decisions"... well, Todt and Ecclestone to get a mandate to do their jobs, then?

This headline in itself is very telling on just how much power they've let go of in recent years. Specially Todt.

It's not as simple as that really. Todt sold that power to the teams, and he can't just come back now and get it back. This will most likely go to court eventually.

Will the LH fans turncoat when merc loses its edge or LH changes teams? Demanding the engine formula to go away?

Don't be so short sighted guys, the way it's heading by the time LH retires no one will be caring about F1 any longer, his greatness winning or not.

Regardless, I believe that having someone make the decisions for the sport is better than the constant bickering of the teams attempting to come up with solutions by committee. However I'm not sure that Bernie and Jean are the right people for the job, time will tell.

Ah, I thought you were referring to, you know, this years V6T's. I'm well aware of the 1,5litre engines of the 80's reaching 12-1400+ hp.

I'm sure I clicked on the Todt/Bernie thread, but somehow I landed in the V6 Hybrid thread....
