http://www.motorspor...da-wtcc-switch/

It seems Huff could switch to a three car Honda factory effort alongside Monteiro and Michelisz!

Lada wanted to retain their current line-up but if this is true plus the fact that Catsburg is joining Porsche in the USC and would be forced to miss a couple of WTCC rounds as calendars collide (if I'm not mistaken) plus the fact that N. Girolami has already signed to race in Stock Car Brasil leave the Russians in a weird position.

So far:

FACTORY ENTRIES:

Citroen Total (Citroen C-Elysee): José María López (confirmed) / Yvan Muller (confirmed)

Honda (Honda Civic): Tiago Monteiro (likely) / Norbert Michelisz (likely, car run by Zengo?) / Rob Huff (rumoured)

Lada Sport Rosneft (Lada Vesta): Rob Huff (was supposed to stay) / Nick Catsburg (likely) / Nico Lapierre (likely).

Polestar Cyan Racing (Volvo S60): Thed Björk (confirmed) / Fredrik Ekblom (confirmed)

INDEPENDENT ENTRIES:

Sebastien Loeb Racing (Citroen C-Elysee): Mehdi Bennani (confirmed) / Gregoire Demoustier (confirmed) / Tom Chilton (rumoured)

Zengo Motorsport (Honda Civic): They may well run Michelisz's factory entry for next season (they were already and almost-works team). BUT if JAS only will run three factory Civics and Zengo doesn't lose sponsorship because of the Hungarian star leaving, they could run some new young Hungarian like Ferenc Ficza, Norbert Toth, etc. I just don't imagine them leaving the series, specially considering how succesful they've been lately and that last season this seemed to be their only important full time program (they raced part-time in TCR, ETCC and Seat León Supercopa).

NIKA Racing (Honda Civic): Rickard Rydell (possible, thou it's weird they didn't announced him at the event where they announced their plans for 2016 so it could be someone else. It's not known if they have enough budget for a full season by themselves SO that could lead to a pay driver like Hugo Valente, who was looking forward to move from the RML cars, to join)

ROAL Motorsport (Chevrolet-RML Cruze): Apparently they will continue ONLY if they can run two cars. Tom Coronel wants to stay but if they can´t find him a new teammate (Tom Chilton is most certainly leaving probably to SLR) he would switch to René Munnich's squad.

Campos Racing (Chevrolet-RML Cruze): They might not continue in TCR as Opel seems to have chosen Target Competition over them to run their Astras, so they are likely to stay in WTCC. John Filippi owns his own Chevy and he could stay receiving Campos' assistance. Hugo Valente could stay if he doesn't find anywhere better to go. They have another car available thou it's most likely to be entered on a race by race basis like they did with Homola, Sritrai and Al-Attiyah last season.

ALL-INKL.COM Munnich Motorsports (Chevrolet-RML Cruze): René Munnich confirmed to return but only on a race by race basis. The full time car would go to Tom Coronel if ROAL leaves the championship. No news on what is Stefano D'Aste going to do.

Craft-Bamboo: Most likely to quit. They don't even own the car they raced last season (it's Demoustier's)

Lada wanted to continue a three car factory program (they are building new chassis as last season's were a bit damaged and hindered their performances) and did not discard the chance of lending some car to a privateer.

Ribeiro announced there's a new manufacturer developing a TC1 car for 2017. It would be Kia. They would run Hyundai's WRC engine upgraded to TC1 power standards (as Citroen does)

Calendar:

May start at Sochi as the attendance at Moscow has been dismal. More here

Race format: Race 1 will be the reverse grid race now. Race 2 will be the "main race" and will last one lap longer that race 1 except at the Nordschleife (I got enthusiastic when they announced a longer race 2 and obviously disappointed when they confirmed it will be only ONE lap longer). Oh, and we will have the bike-inspired MAC-3 on Saturdays after qualy (Volvo would not be able to participate as they will feature only 2 cars on the grid). It will give points only for the manufacturers championship. I understand it will go on for three laps where a team of 3 cars from the same manufacturer would have to work together to cover the distance as quickly as possible. I suppose it will last only for one lap at the Nurburgring.

Calendar:

May start at Sochi as the attendance at Moscow has been dismal.

If they can't attract a crowd to a venue near Moscow, how the hell will they get anyone in Sochi (the back of beyond, even by Russian standards).  More to the point, how reliable would the weather be in Moscow in March?  Compared to the balmy spring in Sochi.

Now Lapierre signs for a full season in ELMS with DragonSpeed. Two ELMS rounds collide with the WTCC calendar and Lada was expecting to keep him, so...

From: http://en.ladasportr...119/24-12-2015/

"It may be the close season for racing however, the Russian squad LADA SPORT ROSNEFT are hard at work in preparations for the new season of the World Touring Car Championship. With LADA SPORT engineers planning to bring the significant car update to the first round of the Championship in 2016.

The update package for the LADA Vesta TC1 include developments to the suspension, chassis and steering components. The 380 bhp turbo engine is to be subject to an evolution as well – with changes in the engine management system.

During this off-season break, the LADA SPORT ROSNEFT team will conduct a programme of out of competition tests at its technical base in Magny-Cours and at other European racing circuits. This is a welcome development for the 2016 season as in previous years the Russian team had to build a new car each time before the start of the season due to the changes in the WTCC technical regulations or as in 2015 to introduce all new models from the LADA range.

This time LADA SPORT engineers will use the winter break for the full-scale testing program and the development of the existing racecar. This will translate into a more effective preparation ahead of the 2016 season, which brings a new wave of competition with Volvo joining LADA, Citroen, Honda and Chevrolet brands in the Championship."

I would love to know what sort of return the manufacturers get for their investment in the WTCC? I suppose the same could be said for the WRC of course.

The WRC gets tens of thousands of enthusiastic fans lining the stages, not to mention all the people who see the event in service areas, towns and villages along the route.  There is more than TV coverage there.

An age old argument BRG

I think you ave to agree with me that tv coverage for WRC has always been fraught.

Does anyone know if it is popular in France? Because of the domination of Loeb and Ogier and Citroen, does it get coverage there?

It has always been a popular thing to watch live as often it is free!  And in the UK there is a traditional element.

But as a tv sport it struggles and always will.

I would guess Citroen spent more deve;loping the WTCC car than they did WRC, they were testing it in new rules spec a year before the new rules came out and basically bought the championship.

WRC is far cheaper than it once was when you had tar cars, gravel cars, Safari cars and lots of testing, but because of the lack of manufacturers now you have 3 or 4 car teams.  So it must balance out.

For me the WTCC is the total opposite of WRC. Made for tv and awful live!

Citroen did a study recently about this. They say WRC came as a clear #2 after F1 popularity wise. It ended up a lot more valuable than WTCC.

So Honda would run Monteiro, Huff and Michelisz as factory drivers, while Lada would have Tarquini, Valente and Catsburg. I suspect Lapierre is only doing sportscars next year.

there has been a sight change for this race dates.

cars will start in France April 3 with Moscow on June 12 (no trip to Sochi) which meant the street race at Vila Real had to move to June 26. the rest of the dates remain as per the 1st race date list. need the old WMSC to confirm it

He showed a very interesting improvement in the last races last season especially in qualify pace (he was FAR away from his teammate until then and was very unimpressive in the TC2T class the previous year) so we will have to wait before passing final judgement. I have the feeling he won't be another Mikhail Kozlovskiy (id est, another too slow youngster who shows no improvement)

Surprised no-one seemed to mention it on the forum but Macau GP winner, BTCC and STCC champion, Le Mans class winner and WTCC race winner Rickard Rydell has retired, aged 48. So, he's definitely out of the race for the NIKA ride this season.

20 car entry list revealed thou still some drivers to be confirmed. NIKA will run John Bryant-Meisner while Tom Coronel stays with ROAL, who are going to run just one car despite previous rumours that it was going to be two cars or nothing for them. Campos announed a second car to partner Filippi but has still to anounce the driver. Zengo plan to run two Civics for two young Hungarians yet to be named. René MÜnnich will race for his own team but will skip those rounds that collide with his commitments in WRX.

According to Hungarian sources Zengő bought the second Civic from NIKA and not from Proteam, so it looks like they will not make it unfortunately.

The field is down to 16 cars at Paul Ricard. Zengő will also miss the opening round due to a very late package deal. One of the engines is still being revised at the UK Mugen factory and the other is at the circuit, but Honda won't let them use it without revision.

There were 17 in qualy.  Nearly as many as F1and far more competitive.

Good to see eccentric Icelandic chanteuse Bjork making a strong debut in motorsport.   ;)

Yeah, the story of Zengő has turned into a soap opera. Honda finally gave them their spare engine, but they were not allowed to use it at full power, because the factory team might need it in case of trouble and last year's car was not homologated with the current engine, which makes it technically illegal, but Ribeiro gave them permission to cruise around on Saturday, but they will not start tomorrow

Also Björk was unfortunately disqualified due to ride height issues, so he will start both races from the back.

Looks a bit more competitive this year - may not be a Citroen cakewalk after all.

Shame about Paul Ricard though. No spectators allowed by the look of it, although a dozen Hungarian Norby fans seemed to have sneaked in.

I want to follow this series because I like the cars, and I liked the race in slovakia, but the 2 hungary races came across as pretty boring to me. Not any tension at the front and the onscreen graphics don't show positions when there is a fight between cars so you don't know what you're looking at.  :well: Especially when you're a wtcc noob like me. I dunno. Also there was a different commentator for the hungary races, which might have been a factor in the enjoyment as well.
