I was thinking about the reasons why the forums are laid out as they are - why is there only one forum for all current discussion of racing series, and one for nostalgia discussion? Is there any historical reason for this?

Surely it would be more sensible to have forums laid out by sport than time period, e.g.

F1

Euro Single Seaters

Sportscars

US Racing

etc.

and allow for both current and historical discussion for the sports. e.g. I like talking about F1 history, but I've never got used to checking out the nostalgia forum - and it is rather quiet in there compared to the Racing Comments, but I think more people would talk about historical cases anyway if it were allowed in a general F1 forum (there is already a lot of overlap anyway).

Also given that F1 is the main sport discussed here, in the racing comments forum any threads about Indycar, sportscars, etc. get swallowed up very quickly. Again, having their own forums might enhance the discussions.

Just my two pence  :)

I rather like the mix in the racing forum and I like the nostagia forum as a separate as there is so much high quality content there. The separation makes it easier to brows through it on rainy weekends and is also usefull when searching for something special.

History at other forums has shown the more you separate them out, the more it kills traffic. Forums are nothing without a good volume of content.

Nope racing is racing, if we start moving between subfora a lot of good discussion will be lost, there are way to many discussions which include formula, sports, standard and sports car racing in one thread. We would also run the risk of the Illuminati of the Historical forum to try implement their special version of "we spoke about this in August 1999, use the search function" across all these subfora.

I would want exactly 1 place to fit all, some want to discuss Space Race relics, some the current political on goings in 'choose country', some will be antagonistic, some will have little to say but say it a lot. I log on, all the threads I have not read are marked, I read those I want I ignore those I do not, I mark all as read and start over next time I am on.

Reorganising the structure of something people know their way around is not a good move, even if can be "improved".

So long as the Indycar threads are on the front page I'm happy with what we have.

Dood, Indy Car hasn't been front page news in years.

Er, did you mean the forums? My bad.

Maybe the bike stuff could be separated, that would probably increase the bike related discussions without interfering with the current.

You need to post 'x' number of posts before you can. In my head say 30.

Forum for FULL MEMBERS only (those with at least 30 posts on the board). The place to talk about (almost!) any non-motorsport topic, while sipping champagne and socialising with others. To gain access you have to PM the Paddock bouncer Slartibartfast and beg...

On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?

I can relate. A picture (avatar) is worth a thousand words as differentiating between underlined text or it being a link is sometimes not so obvious.

Finally joined the PC only because of some kind words Star left in the G4E thread. Glad I clicked on his avatar, as it's a whole different experience in there. Weird eh? I told Star as much.

I do personally agree with a change to the forum structure, but not by combining Racing with Nostalgia.

What irks me about Racing is the presumption that the word Racing apparently means 'F1 forum', thus many non-F1 threads have to specifically state the series name in the title to stand a chance. There are so many threads of the ilk 'Who was best champion' etc, that could be about ANY series, but never are. Yes, you'll never be able to include every series but Racing could easily be sub-dividedas per the OP's suggestion, although I'd add 'F1 support' and change 'Euro Single Seaters' to 'Other Single Seaters'. And definitely not just 'US Racing', that would need breaking up a bit as I think Indycar has a large enough forum share to justify it.

Great idea though OP. I rarely post anymore in F1 threads, for reasons obvious to anyone else who also rarely posts anymore in F1 threads, so I see no reason we shouldn't be able to head straight into a forum we're interested in, rather than have to wade through a lot of dross looking for interesting topics.

If I were to split it up at all, I would make F1 a subforum (the only one) of Racing Comments. F1-specific threads (e.g. SF16T thread or Nico vs. Lewis thread) could go in there while general threads about racing which are currently standard fare in there (e.g Red Bull Ring remodel) would remain in RC.
