Even if it doesn't make that much difference to the prize money, I really want Sauber to end the season with a point or two. Good honest established team with good people. Ericsson especially deserves a couple of points on the board to underline what's actually been a pretty good year for him.

As a Manor-fan, I cannot agree with you there, not unless "we" score more as well ;)

Although there is no deserving something in the world of sports, and in regards to this specific battle luck and random events might decide it all I still have to say - Manor deserve this.

Sauber under the leadership of Monisha Kalteborn is not very sympathetic and Manor is the proper underdog. So go Manor.

Sauber - do better and do better nicer.

Go Sauber! They deserve the point and Ericsson is doing a great job and Nasr not that bad too. Sauber has been my favourite team since I started watching F1 with Force India

I've always had a soft spot for Sauber too. I loved the 1998 car with the round steering wheel, loved their discovery of Kimi, the BMW/Kubica years, and when they briefly re-emerged as a force at the front in 2012. They've been in F1 for 23 years, they're good value. Their last three or four years have been a bit painful and with an old engine will probably continue to be next year. I just hope they survive it.

They lost all good people who brought team to the front in 2012, like Key, Morris and Kobayashi, it's all being Monisha's fault. I don't understand why she is still in charge.

Seems like Sauber are getting their act together. Retiring Jorg Zander was a master stroke. Next year's performance differentiator will be chassis performance withe the aero rules changing an experienced designer like Zander makes sense. I doubt there will be much advantage gained by running 17 PUS.

Congrats Nasr!

2p to the team = 30m to the team.

Amazing, these points will be vital for Sauber - glad it finally happened!

Good to see Sauber get points, sad to see Manor likely to get beat in the WCC though.

Always been fond of this team, however, ever since Monisha Kaltenborn took charge, I have went totally off of them.

She is lucky that they finally got the investors and her drivers have stayed motivated (well mainly one Ericsson) to push for the results.

Let's hope they can come back strong in the midfield, but this team isn't going any places with Monisha in charge, nearly two pointless seasons for the team.

Maybe now Sauber can afford 2017 Ferrari engines.

Great result, Nasr must have felt fantastic after that tremendous drive holding his place against illustrious opposition.  Well done to the team, finally some luck turned their way.  Hopefully things will improve next year with the extra funding they've secured.

And the cost for that is?

Too late. The fundamental parameters of their 2017 design will be well locked in, and built around the 2016 engine. A big team might have the resources to accommodate a change like this at this stage, but not Sauber.

Would those parameters be so different?

That depends entirely on how much Ferrari has changed around the periferals (ERS system placements, exhausts, radiators and the various cooling ducts). It could be a really big change in terms of packaging, or it could be quite minimal.

I think Sauber are probably already thinking about 2018 and a longer term plan, possibly around Honda engines.

Ferrari seem to be putting a major emphasis on PU next year so I.would assume that would require a major redesign. Given a tidy design. A 30bhp deficit to a current PU won't be big. Torso Ross has shown.what can be done.

Wehrlein deal to Sauber is done  Just a few details need to be sort out.

http://www.autosport...n-deal-for-2017

It's a bit of a sideways move really.  With their funding woes through the first half of 2016 Sauber might not have a great car in 2017.  Old engine too.  Last chance saloon for Pascal, you have to think.

Oh, are they sticking to just one driver signing per seat again this year?

It's good signing for Sauber - Wehrlein.

As for Manor I think they will make the grid this year, but what happens to Manor's discount engine from Mercedes?

The discount was €4m euros that's all.

No Mercedes was only offering €4m this year for any team, did the same for Ocon and FI

Yeah but Ocon was up against candidates with money, like Haryanto and Rossi, i remember reading Mercedes offered further discount.

Yes they got another €4m when Ocon came in but my point still stands, Mercedes was only offering €4m for Wehrlein this season.

You are right, i on the other hand was pointing that this year Manor didn't lose only 4 but 8M compared to last year so the financial capacity will be sensibly diminished.

Sauber have not confirmed Wehrlein, and Autosport are only quoting "sources with good knowledge" whilst adding that the contract has not actually been finalised - meaning not signed.

Somebody opened his mouth too soon; Lauda being the prime suspect as usual.

Would be funny if Sauber took Giovinazzi instead.

Monisha is in charge so nothing would stop them from taking both   ;)

On a serious note, it would be surprising if Wehrlein in the end isn't confirmed for Sauber. I doubt we will never know, but it would be interesting to know if Mercedes support Sauber financially for signing Wehrlein one way or another as they can't deal with engine discounts in this case.

Nothing wrong with cash. Since they have a Ferrari engine, much better.

Will be interesting to see if he will carry Mercedes identification on his overall or helmet. If he is actually confirmed.

Stickers and badges are old school.

I assume Sauber can't afford to have Wehrlein drive for free, and need both drivers bring financing to the team so I assume Mercedes will bring financing in some form to Sauber. Without putting a badge on the driver or a sticker on the car.

They will already have designed around the chosen engine. Changing now would cost them more than just the extra money.

IIRC it was reported months ago this was the main reason for keeping the 2017 engines as the' 18' would mean a complete overhaul of there rear end which includes everything from cooling to rear suspension. So a few million here or there now wont make any difference
