Last thing - seeing Gidley take second, and with the Rolex 24 next weekend, I can't help but wonder how he is getting on these days. Hopefully his ongoing recovery from those injuries sustained in 2014 is progressing well.

From what I've read in Robin Miller's column, Gidley's still not walking. That was a horrible crash. :(

What, no winner's interview?

But wow, what an entertaining race.

On a serious note, I enjoyed that. Great idea, Sheep. This forum is great, five pages for a race that happened 15 years ago!

Well, that was more fun than I was expecting, even if I missed the start time--our Atlas Autosport time machine apparently only works so well :p

We should make this into a permanent thing, to do a race each weekend during the offseason!

Yeah, this has been great, scratched an itch for me. I'd be up for doing this again!

I'm glad you all enjoyed it. It was a lot a fun (so much fun I've now run out of likes to give for the day. :( ) and I'd be eager to do this again. Any suggestions as to when and where can be sent on a postcard at:
Help me Paul Page
Laguna Seca
Monterrey
Po box 2691
:drunk:
Or send me a fax sheet of your suggestions.

But seriously we need to do this again. :)

That would be very sad if true. This was the most recent update I could find:

http://www.racer.com...timism?showall=

It's great to read how optimistic he still is, even after everything he's gone through. Sounds like a top bloke.

Was about an hour behind the rest of you, I'd forgotten how violent that crash of Servia's was, ouch.

A cool idea, I'm up for this again, not least for the kind of forum commentary that could only come from Indycar Champcar.

Let's do it again two weeks from now; we've got the Rolex 24 next weekend.

There's an odd sort of brilliance to this and the thread. It's like watching the Star Wars prequels, except somehow they're fascinating, well-made, and possibly better than the originals. :p

That would be a tragic parallel with Regazzoni's crash at Long Beach, where he also hit a stationary car.

I very much enjoyed the first hour I watched, and the banter!

I was so desperate for some Indycar action that I sat through the Indy Lights Iowa race from last year...

Mid march and St Pete cannot come soon enough!

Sadly I missed it, as least you guys had a great time, the Rolex 24 is next week so maybe we should do another in 2 weeks (oh, and Bathurst 12hr, that slipped my mind, thanks Victor)?

I suggest for the next time we do this Denver '06, maybe we could take in some more suggestions?

Bathurst 12 Hour on that weekend. That will rule me (at least) out.

Let's keep 'em special and not congesting the, er, real racing. Is my opinion. Formula E from Buenos Aires is on Bathurst 12 Hour weekend as well.

14 February and 6 March (NASCAR from Vegas excepted) are the last two race-free Sundays of the off-season. I think we should go for one of those.

Not to make a humorless, correcting post (because that's Prost1997T's job  :D ), but last I read/heard, Gidley was able to walk, boat, do quite a bit, but is in constant pain from nerve damage. That is, unless there's been a change since his second spinal fusion surgery in December. Here was his update in December, posted at his website and on the RACER website: http://memogidley.co...-sixth-surgery/

If you send it to Monterrey, it will wind up in Mexico ;)

Aha, my mistake. Perhaps I took Miller's wish to "get Memo Gidley back on his feet" more literally than intended.

Thanks

(p.s. don't change, Prost: we love you and your accurate memory)

Memo was briefly on FS1's broadcast of the Rolex 24 last year, as a guest commentator. He said that his goal was to get back into racing at some point and that he didn't plan on giving up. That's the last I'd heard from him--hard to find any news elsewhere. Loved his one-word reaction when he was first showed video of his crash: 'Bulls%$t.'

Also seconded with Prost1997T. The factoids are quite helpful. ;)

Before this gets out of hand, it was a good natured ribbing of Prost1997T in the spirit of our Indycar posts, not meant in any way otherwise. Which means it actually wasn't a humorless, correcting post  :D

LOL, I watched the race late yesterday. Boy, they really knew how to indycar back in the day! :rotfl:

My brain had somehow decided to not store this crash-fest in permanent memory, so I was genuinely entertained   Even enjoyed the commercials  :cat:

I'm working on that hand-gesture for my next meeting.

Was too all over the place lately and too Mercury Retrograde to be live for this one here. But I've read the whole thing.

You did it, Sheep. I knew you had it in you.

So next one will be on the 14th? Can I have dibs?

I've had a think about when and where we do the next one of these and maybe the best way to decide is if everyone nominates an event (be it champcar or indycar) and a time that would suit them, then after about a week I will compile them into a poll and you can all vote for your favourite one and we'll do that. Does that sound like a good idea? :)

I find the 14th the best date as well. I have no idea about what event to see, I've only watched 8-10 races from 2014 or earlier so all races are fine with me.

How about Fontana 2000 for a quirky title decider, on the 14th at 6pm GMT.

My nominations are:

New Hampshire 1993
Vancouver 1997

Road America 1999

Super races all three. And I'd guess that they're not so famous that we know the story already.

I want to do the thread, and I'll let you dudes pick the race. Van '97, Fon '00 and Den '06 are all fine by me. If it's ok with you lot, maybe we can have a double-header?

Also I do like improvised random decision making... like let's say the 8th race of '03 Cart/Indy/whatever season. Have no bloody clue what that race even is. Is it thrilling? Is it boring? Is it cool? Is it sad? It's Indycar. **** knows.

So I actually just checked to see where I was on this day and to my surprise the answer is...

7952b8fdcae6a6d81dc7ca73dd2d597f.jpeg

Jp

Wow, that was like barely 1 month after the face of the world changed forever. Must have been quiet an atmosphere.

I remember being in NYC in May 2002, so more than half a year after 9/11. At some point, we were strolling through lower Manhattan, through the streets surrounding Walstreet. Business as usual. Busy expensive suits rushing by, checking mails on early blackberries. Mobile phone glued to another ear. Suddenly, all went quiet. Phones were cut off, Blackberries stored away. Without knowing it, we had reached ground zero. It felt as if the city turned into a sea of silent sorrow...

That was more than 8 months later. I can only imagine how emotional it must have been barely one month later.

Cool idea. I missed the January 24th-race viewing, but February 14th may work.

Maybe a late 90's CART event coupled to a Nascar-race of the same era. Or why not a CART/F1 combination?

The idea of doing a "classic Champ Car" for Laguna Seca 2001 is so perverse it's brilliant. I'll see what I can do to check in tomorrow.

That is, if I'm not too wound up over who the father of Rachel's baby is. Or for that matter whether I can tear myself away from my Sega Dreamcast.

I hope Tokyo Bus Driver is included in your collection.

The Valentine's Day things isn't such an issue for me ( :(), but that day is a problem because it's my dad's birthday. :p

But otherwise, whatever day people decide on I'll see if I can join you. This was fun, and I'd definitely be up for doing it again, whenever that is.

1996 was the year when they ran the Indy/US 500s at the same time, a ridiculous decision prompted by the disgraceful 25/8 rule promulgated by Tony George and IMS.
