Saw this in the dumbest ideas thread. As we are in the off-season I think it deserves an own thread.

CZZ0iODWYAAUR3x.png

Gianlu D'Alessandro ‏@Gianludale27
New layout for Monza. Probably there will be a new chicane (yellow line) with an elevation change of 2,5m #Gazzetta

It seems Vettel has already tried the new chicane (maybe at the simulator? ): according to him would be very difficult to get the right trajectory (for the elevation change of 2,5m), but his impressions of the new chinace would be very positive #Vettel [#Monza

Whiting would have already approved the new chicane (also for LMP1 cars). Ecclestone, instead, wouldn't like the layout change | #Monza

Your opinion?

If it makes the track harder to drive, as Vettel suggests, bring it on

I saw this on twitter earlier and really  hoped it was a joke

Well even if they get it wrong they will just be able to cut straight across the tarmac run off and keep their position

So would a number of corners. I don't get the reason for adding a corner.

There was an overtaking opportunity into the chicane after curva grande. Wouldn't a short distance to the chicane negate that opportunity?

Well, it is a unique corner where you need balls to overtake, I cant imagine that any chicane will be better than that

I dislike chicanes enormously - I feel that they disrupt the flow of the circuit, but I'm aware that I'm notoriously conservative, and maybe it will help.

I still want a course that encourages pedal to the metal, sideways drifting insanity.

Chicanes don't do that.

A lot of nice battles happen at that particular corner in the acceleration from T1/2, also one of (now few) memorable and iconic corner with trees on both sides, so i dont see reason to change. It might work, it might be better, but "dont fix if it's not broken" applies there for me.

If it means they can get rid of the chicane on the main straight then that could improve things for bikes.

Mostly though I want Monza to be distinctive, and this feels like turning one of its (few) corners into an identikit esses thing.

Why on earth? This is ridiculous! The most exciting action at Monza happens between the 1st and 2nd chicane! In all types of cars this is the case! First they made a joke of parabolica a now this? I would rather f1 didn't race at Monza than ruin it!

AFAIK it is no problem to skip the chicane for the bike races

I hope that in the end this change for the Curva Grande will just apply for the bikes and F1 can stil use the old layout. But that is probably just a wish  :(

Spa's been ruined. May as well go for some more destruction at Monza too. F1 continual pointless tinkering must be catching.

Not only would that ruin what what we already have, it would destroy some of the remains of the old Pirelli circuit. That's what might pain me the most.  :(

Oliver Harden @OllieHarden

@RichJLaverty of at the minute is commercial reasons. The outside wall at Curva Grande is devoid of any logos as it stands. Very rare for F1

so maybe a chicane - a change of direction - will lead to new camera angles & give Rolex, Pirelli, etc a little more exposure

The part between the first and second chicanes is about the only exciting part of Monza. :well:

Not for the drivers, of course, I get that, but moves elsewhere are very rare - and the main straight is hardly worth mentioning anymore thanks to DRS.

Meh. Good job, I guess.

Curva Grande in to Variante della Roggia is the iconic. Don't fuck with it.

And it will bring the average speed down.

Curva Grande typically has crash risks towards the bridge...is that the real reason?

They get a little extra money and the first thing they do is give more of it to Bernie and put in a chicane on one of the most famous corners on the calendar?

What a joke.

Sod it, let's just do away with any other tracks and drive around Yas Marina 20 times a year.

It's so damned sad. They'll probably ruin Monza and then lose the GP anyway, just like Hockenheim.

I think the same saying is "squadra che vince non si cambia" = "you shouldn't change a winning team"

Seriously, the idea is so ******** it doesn't even deserve the time of discussion

But, I wonder if such chicane means that Roggia loses its point...if Roggia was eliminated, maybe we would see good racing through the Lesmos

Take out the first chicane as it exists now and lets see if Vettel still thinks it's easy.

F1 makes me angry like a man with a fork in a world of soup.

It's not that I even care about F1 anymore but the ruination of old circuits is just depressing.

It really doesn't surprise of shock me anymore. It would see the point to slowing down the entry to Variante Ascari to improve overtaking. But this just ... screws up the track basically.

Getting used to it happening now. Although its not like Monza hasn't already become a shadow of its former layouts. As with Silverstone over the years.

Oh FFS.

Is it too much to ask for people to stop ruining the great race tracks of the world? They've already wrecked the Parabolica at Monza, why do they need to bother with this crap?

Just to clarify that the main reason is probably to get an appropriate track for the WSBK together. Considering that they are building the corner on the old Pirelli circuit (so Curva Grande is stil there), we might be lucky and F1 will stil race there. I guess it depends all on Bernie, who doesnt seems to be in favourof this layout.

If their plans are to just add the corner to make a layout for WSBK to run on why not just announce that so that other motorsport fans don't freak out and try and second guess what they're doing.

Given the massive backlash against their changes to Parabolica you would've thought they'd learn something from it.

I wish this was April 1st and a massive joke but sadly not. Why ruin such a great track with another chicane? What next redisgning the parabolica with a Mexico style section?

I think these old tracks should have some listed status, like you get with old buildings etc. So you can't go radically changing bits whenever it so pleases you. :p

I'm only half joking. Why can't they just leave things alone and stop constantly tampering with it? It's been fine for god knows how many years, save your four million for something more worthwhile like facilities or something.

That's right, go and ruin one of the few iconic corners left. I bet it will be surrounded by a car park as well (seeing cars racing on the edge of the Curva Grande gravel in the early laps of an Italian GP is one of the few thrills of the season left).

I might come round to it if they got rid of the first chicane, meaning there would be an epic straight, but I doubt that will happen. It looks awful for overtaking as well.

i also see it will cost 4m Euros - I mean seriously, they can barely afford to pay for the race contract, why waste this money on blatent desecration?

Curva Grande would be fantastic without the first chicane.

Who knows, maybe that would promote better racing - more slipstream effect, and the corner is fast enough that there should be more than enough grip, even in the wake of another car.

Please, please, please do not mess with Monza. It has suffered enough over the years without blighting it with another chicane.
