The third annual Cars Of Australia was held today at Strathalbyn Oval.

A very nice day made it a pleasant outing. And Strath itself is a pleasant place.

A good crowd of cars, seemingly not quite as many or varied as last years. For that see Lynton Hemers pics on here from last year.

I have quite a few pics from the day. Color is a bit average in the midday sun. Sorry

Gilbert Haywood has had several interesting vehicles in his time.

This one sat in the shed on the farm for most of the time after Bruce died until his sons decided to offer it to Gilbert last year.

The only panel damage was a small guide post scrape on the near side door sill, which happened within a short time after

Bruce bought the truck new in 1970.

The truck was restored in three months, the dent repaired, panels stripped and repainted, and door rubbers replaced.

The engine only had 69000 odd genuine miles on it, and as Gilbert demonstrated for you, and me as well, it runs like the legendary sewing machine.

The manifold has been replaced, although the carby simply came off, was shaken around in some petrol and put back.

He says he took the distributor out of the block, to clean around it, and put it back without ever taking the cap off.

I do love the U turn the airfilter pipe does on these As. Some had a very minimal filter or none at all. Right hand drive steering box the culprit!

The feral V8 went missing as I was going to take its pic.

The Mk1 GT was a very pretty little car, in fact its class winner.

Where were you hiding?  I did keep my eyes open for you.

Reputedly the owner has yet to actually drive the FC,, after 3 years.

I was there for 4 hours and did not see any Studebakers! And I like them.

Cars came and went all day.

A shame the AT4 owner doesn't know his stuff...

The '229' is the truck model number based on the wheelbase (129") and specs.

The engine is a 225 slant.

Yes, he did make an oops. 229 is weird though? Single rear wheels and 2 ton load?  I thought they were all 129s. 129 " wheelbase and 1 ton [not tonne!] load. I bet of the math was done on the tyre capacity I would be fairly close. eg 7 50x16 has a load of 1500kg and even an 8 25x16 has a load of 1800 kg. remember aprox 2/3 of the load will be over the rear axle.

...until the roll pin floats out of position...

This allows the planetary shaft to move, which causes disaster at speed. Substitute a 6/110 or A110 rear end complete and use Triumph 2000 wheel nuts and the problem is solved.

However, it seems this owner has had his number plate attuned to an AT4. 118" wheelbase, 'ATF' for 'AT4'. It looks like he might have International running gear under it too, as it has 5-stud wheels. Unless, of course, he has a later model US-style chassis with independent front end and disc brakes. Any side-on views?

Lee, the MGC engine was a 7-bearing version of the C-series...

Austin A90, A95, A105, Morris Isis, Morris Marshal, Healey 100/6, Riley Two Point Six and Wolseley shared the 2639cc-litre version, Austin A99, A110, Wolseley 6/99, 6/110, Princess 3-litre and Healey 3000 shared the 2912cc version.

The rocker cover is visibly different, I think the engine was shortened a little overall but I don't know the full details. But I do know that it would be a pain working on the inlet manifold with that extension on the thermostat housing!

I always understood the Austin engine was different to the Morris. Different bore and stroke. And I understood the MGC was Morris. I know very little about them other wise. Big Healeys go quickly and I have never seen an MGC race.

I do understand the diffs however. And there was different ratios and drive flanges on Morris to Austin. An Isis diff is about an inch wider than an A90 as are J Vans too.

.

D5N ute body with L300 front cross member and 9" diff. It is a Hotrod based on a D5N100 series ute.

No plate is random issue.

It does have the wrong front bumper,, from a AT4.

The D5N used the same front bumper  pressing as a VG,,, and CL. Who said Chrysler recycled parts!

Couldn't be random issue, surely?

So a Falcon rear end or similar?

The MGC shared its engine with the Austin 3-litre Deluxe...

Sort of a rear wheel drive Austin 1800 with longer nose and tail. Short-lived, neither were sold in Australia.

The true C-series (4-bearing) engines differed from marque to marque in only small things. Some had twin SUs, some had single downdraughts, drive flanges were the same, no trouble with interchangeability over a long period. Ratios differed depending on the car and whether or not it had the overdrive gearbox.

From memory the stroke in all was the same, the 2.9-litre versions had a bigger bore, later versions of them had different heads too. This is obviously ignoring the changes that were made for Healeys, triple SUs, 12-port heads etc.

The Classic Car Show,on SBS in Oz, did a programme on the MG B&C late last year, really ripped it into the C and BMC/BL in general, which is par for the course, copped a hammering from Journo's at the time. There were a few running around Sydney, direct imports i guess.

O/T but very interesting read,GMH in-house newsletter just before all hell broke loose over the HD,apparently Division Managers were told they had 12 Months to get a new model into the Dealer network.

Thank you very much for this excellent thread.

I have about a dozen books on Australian autos and this will give me the urge to read them again after not doing so for ten years.

That Humber how does that compare in size to the 1950d style Holdens and how do those Holden compare in size to say a 56 Chevy or Ford?

Thank you very much for this excellent thread.

I have about a dozen books on Australian autos and this will give me the urge to read them again after not doing so for ten years.

That Humber how does that compare in size to the 1950d style Holdens and how do those Holden compare in size to say a 56 Chevy or Ford?

The Super Snip is bigger than a Holden and a bit smaller than a Chev/Ford. Big heavy pommy car and nearly certainly heavier than the Chev. The 6 cyl engine in them was shared with Commer trucks. Big torquey and again heavy engine.

The Humber though went in that shape until about 62 and looked dated. They were expensive and generally bank managers olr doctors cars when new.

Thank you.

I did some searching  and see the LA Chrysler V8 will fit in a Humber.

That would be a street sleeper.

I have seen a 292 Y block in one a long time ago.

I suspect the original Blue Riband 6 would still perform ok, I have seen those engines with twin SUs and cast headers and the like. Maybe they had a Sports engine?  Though small bore long stroke will not rev very hard.

Just remember they are British!  With all its pitfalls!

Yet more.

1 Lasalle

2 HR X2 engine. This has ticked the option list very well. Power [proably disc] brakes, windscreen washers, reverse lights plus ofcourse for 66 the ultimate engine 186X2. slightly higher compression, very mild cam, slightly bigger valves and twin strombergs and cast headers. Actually they went well, later in the run they were replaced with the 186S which used a single 2bbl on otherwise the same engine. That engine continued until 71.

I suggest this van has been built from a collection of genuine parts. It has all the correct parts though I do not think the vans ever came with the X2 engine. I do stand to be corrected on that,, a dealer with pull could have had one built as such. This car though misses out on the X2 badges on the front guards and tailgate!

3 Very nice upmarket HQ GTS 4 308 4 speed. This car is restored 100% original, even the engine bay is not over restored.

4 Said car engine bay

5 68 Galaxie

6 390 FE in above Galaxie

7 Mk7 Bolwell. These were a  very proffesional kit car usually powered with Holden 6s though this one has a V8 seemingly by the badge. The Nagari that followed were factory built, usually with 302 or 351 Clevelands from Ford. Google 'Bolwell Cars' for a surmise of the models.

8  XW Falcon GS in starlight blue. The GS was the 'budget' sports model. Lots of these were molested and became 'faker shakers' [GTs] as is the car in the background. Probably worth more original now than as a fake GT. This one is even rarer as it is a GS Fairmont that makes it easier to mockup into a GT clone as they used the same trim.

9  Holden 1 ton tipper

10 Holden HR Van belonging too the above engine. These pics seem to go where they want too, not where I want them too!
