Thanks for highlighting this, Ian - hadn't realised anything was amiss.

This is a shame. I didn't know what had happened to them after they were taken out of service, but they're surely something the government has a moral responsibility to preserve - they're part of the nation's history and heritage.
I only went on one once, there and back, when I went to Le Mans with Page & Moy in 1976. I've never been very far so it was an event in my life. It was noisy and rough and a bit crude, tbh, but an awful lot quicker than the ferry, even if it left a much longer bus journey to Le Mans. The other times I've been to Le Mans I've either gone from Southampton to Le Havre or from Newhaven to Dieppe, on the ferry. I've never been abroad otherwise.
I had the Airfix model, although I never did build it. IIRC the SRN4s were run by British Rail and by a private enterprise (Hoverlloyd?).
I really hope they save at least one.

Brief update today courtesy of the BBC. Seems that there is some progress behind the scenes but I wish the museum would update its website. There are more than 15,000 supporters on the petition now. Would be nice to think that some of that support could be converted into cash when push (or lift) comes to shove!

Maybe we could start a petition for the Connew on that basis....

Good news today from the Hovercraft Museum. The extract below is from the museum's press release issued today (15th August)
SR.N4 "The Princess Anne" saved for the Nation !
The Hovercraft Museum
15 AUG 2016 — The Hovercraft Museum Trust is delighted to announce that they have been successful in securing the future of SRN4 "The Princess Anne". We are also absolutely delighted to announce we will partially open the craft to the public at the Hovershow next weekend!!!
We have worked very closely with our landlord, the Homes & Communities Agency to land an initial 3 year lease (at peppercorn rent) with the intention of the HCA to hand the craft over completely to the Trust at the end of the 3 years. This time period allows us to fulfil obligations in making the craft safe and of smart appearance.
We would like to thank the team at HCA, the 23,000 signatories to our petition and the support of the Museum's local MP Caroline Dineage. There has been an awful lot of work going on behind the scenes. Special thanks also goes to our hardworking team of volunteers and trustees who have managed the campaign and we would also like to thank Cliff Valize-Jones for setting up the Save the SRN4 Facebook group which massively raised our profile.
The real work starts now though - volunteers to undertake work on her please get in touch! Wednesday this week we will drop the bow ramp to allow access for volunteers to prep part of the craft for public access but we have a huge job list to do before the craft is fully open and accessible.
Also, share and support our fundraising page at http://www.gofundme.com/srn4hovercraft
Many thanks again for all I your help and support.
