I have just come across this announcement that there is to be a celebration of the 90th anniversary of Sir Henry Segrave's setting of the world land speed record on Ainsdale beach on the 16th March.

Sir Henry's Sunbeam Tiger is scheduled to appear, the car currently in the ownership of Force India owner, Vijay Mallya. Many TNFers will recall Mallya racing the car in VSCC meetings in the 1990s, after which it went on display at Brooklands for a while

Already signed up for the 16th March.

The Cub and the McCalla 2-litre GP Sunbeam (from Ulster) are promised plus hopefully other racing Sunbeams and some Twin-Cams (and at least one anachronistic Talbot Saloon  )

A couple of snaps from Ainsdale Beach yesterday. It was great to see Sir Henry's Sunbeam return to the scene of its triumphant runs 90 years ago. The car was immaculately turned out by the Mallya Collection and was driven by their collection manager, Malcolm Page

Wonderful sight - thanks, Alan.

Bet they had fun cleaning all the salt off afterwards.

If you check on the Daily Mail website, you will find a further selection of excellent photos of the activities at Ainsdale yesterday
Thanks for the thread Alan.

Yes, excellent photos, but I have to say there are some unreliable and/or misleading captions.

But two links from here to the Daily Mail in a day must be a record.

1) There were a lot more than 27 cars taking to the sands.

2) Programmes for the event are still available at the Atkinson Gallery in Southport priced £5.00

Thanks Alan, thanks all. In this day and age - as they say - it is, at best, unusual to see such things.  That the Daily Mail has carried the story is nothing short of incredible.

There were two GP Sunbeams at Southport. The 'Cub' (DA 8667) which lives at the NMM and the former W. Trevor McCalla car (DA 8420) which lived at the Ulster Museum at Cultra for years were/are on display in The Atkinson Centre, Lord Street. Neither were running. DA 8420 appeared to be in the middle of a major rebuild with stripped aluminium bodywork and no engine or gearbox. The Tiger was returned to display at The Atkinson after the runs on Wednesday.

There is a cavalcade of Classic Cars through Southport today (Saturday) as the final event of the Festival of Speed.

Thanks for this information.

Does anyone know where the ex-Jenks GP Sunbeam is now, and if it has been restored yet?

I seem to remember it went to one of his friends in the USA.

Really nice pics.  Too much to hope for that they'd actually spell Sir Henry's surname correctly I suppose.    Around 1990, I tried to persuade Windermere that the town really should try to acknowledge its connections with the Segrave story and at the time was looking to "twin".  I suggested that Baltimore (Segrave's birthplace) and / or Daytona would be appropriate but they not only failed to understand the connection but their response also spelled Segrave as Seagrave.  I did, however, manage to persuade the Old England Hotel in Bowness (where Sir Henry stayed when attempting the Water Speed Record in 1930) to feature Miss England II as their inn sign.  Long since replaced...
