It looks like the war for the power at Renault between Frederic Vasseur and Cyril Abiteboul is hurting the team.

I believe in Vasseur. Abiteboul not so much.

That structure was weird from day 1 when they announced the team, it was a recipe for disaster.

Hulkenberg offered big money by Renault to buy out his Force India contract and be lead driver at Renault

Sainz was initially approached but Redbull hold the option on him and refused to end the contract.

I think he's been at risk of losing his seat for a few races now...

The car has been quick since Hungary, has anyone noticed it.

HUN - PAL and MAG show pace for Q3 in FP3, but rain stops that. In Race PAL runs in P10 until spin dropping him to P12, MAG finished P15

GER - PAL makes Q2 in P16, MAG 17th. In race, MAG runs well near the Toro Rosso's, Haas', McLaren's and finished P16 due to poor strategy, P12 was possible. PAL collides on lap 1, recovers to P19

BEL - Despite this being a power track, they manage P12 and P14 in qualifying. PAL suffers fuel problems despite running in P9 early on and finishes P15. MAG crashes whilst in P10

ITA - In quali, PAL is a low P20 whilst MAG runs of the track and ends up in P21. in race, PAL collides with Sauber and MAG still shook after a big crash in spa, finishes P17

SIN - Quali disappointing as MAG and PAL P17 and P19. In race, MAG drives well to point in P10, whilst PAL recovers from puncture to P15

MAL - In quali, MAG p14, whilst team argues that P12 was possible but PAL  chokes and is P19. In race, PAL steals a point for P10 whilst MAG suffers puncture and damaged and is retired

JAP - In FP3, both cars P8 and P9. In quali however PAL is limited by yellow flag to P16, yellow flag meant that he wouldn't be as high as P13 whilst MAG stuffs his quali and is P18. In race they show as good pace as Willliams and PAL finished P12 and MAG P14 where no retirement;s occur

Interesting article about the pure pace of the Renault compared to the fast car of the weekend.

http://www.autosport...in-the-midfield

It would be interesting to see a relative pure pace comparison to all the other teams. That would give a clearer picture, not just an outtake Renaults pace in relation to the fastests car of the weekend.

Marklar, you game? ;)

Regardless of actual intent, the headline "Renault believes it is back in Formula 1's midfield" comes off like the writer is giving a sly look to the audience.

"In 2016, we cut in half the performance gap with Mercedes, which has gone from one second to half a second.
"For 2017, we want to cut that in half again in order to finish the season approximately 0.25s behind our main rival."

I believe the team did a very good job last year with that patched up and underdevelopped Lotus E23B.

0.25?? Isn't that proximate enough to close in on them in season? 0.5 sec would big enough a barrier to overhaul, .25s?!

Hey mods can we open the new car thread, we have at least as much info on the new yellow car as we do on the red and orange ones.

Yes time to open an RS.17 thread

What I think I know about it:
Renault might use a carbon fiber casing for its gearbox (for the first time since 2009? AFAIR). Anyway the 2017 one is completely new (For 2016, they reverted back to a 2015 casing after they ditched their 2016 for-a-Merc-PU designed-PU Gbox because it didnt fit the Renault)

And the RS.17 might have Y-shaped lower front whishbones like Merc, Ferrari, RB etc.

And the new PU is much more compact than the 2014-2016 one according o Key/Toro Rosso.

RacecarEngineering-April:

But what sort of CF casing are we talking about? are the Ferrari and Merc real carbon-fibre casings? is their CF outer shell that surrounds the titanium internal casing thick enough so you can deignate it as the main Gbox casing? what about the RBR Gbox?

"Enstone has used a titanium casing for many years, along with Xtrac internals, but looking to the future it is clear that Chester and his team are contemplating adopting a composite casing in 2017, though they have yet to fully commit to it. ‘I think there are pros and cons to using a cast titanium ’box. The structure works quite well, but then some people have done very nice carbon fibre cases which could give a bit more freedom on suspension pickups, for example. But if you have a relationship with a good casting firm and a good machining firm then its straightforward – you design it and it gets made. With a carbon gearbox you have to develop all the processes to laminate it, manufacture it, work out the bulkheads – it is quite a big engineering exercise. While it works well for some teams this is not a trivial process. For 2017 it will be a totally new gearbox, a new concept, but it is a bit early to reveal much more than that now."
"A lot of teams have gone for the narrow span front wishbone. Its’ an interesting area to look at. We are looking at the front and we know there is a gain to be had in terms of aero profiles. At the rear there are always things we can do to make the car ride better, too."

And that looks like a photoshop or a 3d render to me but it also seems to be a logical evolution of the late2015-2016 nose: it looks like an optimised-shorteneded/swept back-raised version of the RS16 nose, similar to what many teams did with their nose since 2015, like Red Bull
c.jpg

But the vertical mounts of the nose/FW seem to have an odd shape IMO. They would look like this seen from the side, similar to the austin 2014 prototype nose on the left)  Am I right?
