Are the WEC guys (Lotterer, Nakajima, Kobayashi and co) doing a full season this year or will they have to skip races?

Sadly there's no chance of that happening. He'll be learning circuits others know inside out. And Super Formula is yet another series in which Honda is having their butt kicked.

It is probably better to look at how he does against the Honda drivers. If he finishes 1st or 2nd of the honda's then he will have done well.

Circuits are not likely to be a problem for him.  Just car competitiveness.

Yuhi Sekiguchi to drive for Impul. So no Calderelli, Sutil, Duval, Stanaway or any other European based drivers joining Vandoorne in Japan.

Is that Will Buller? Wonder why he's bothering testing GP2 with Carlin this week if so.

Duval is concentrating on FE as his open-wheel programme alongside WEC these days isn't he?

Edit - just seen list, yes Lotterer.

Yes he raced Super formula last year. I think one race clashes with Monaco gp2. Don't know if he actually plans to race gp2 or not.

Yes sorry for misunderstanding I meant joining the series. Lotterer, Rossiter, Baguette still there. Duval did test at the end of last year and was thinking about returning apparently. Stanaway tested for Honda and Sutil was also linked with a drive for Toyota.

I think in a way it's a shame Super Formula doesn't attract better drivers from Europe because the cars, the tracks, the fanbase and the series generally isn't far from Indycar or even F1 - desperately needs an influx of better drivers than Karthikeyan and co I think. Vandoorne is a good start.

Yamamoto's pole (1:37.459) within five seconds of Rosberg's pole time last year at Suzuka (1:32.584).

Those cars are quick.

Good to see Vandoorne put his car fourth on the grid in his first qualy.

Pay them a million each or something and that will start to happen.

First race of the season is about to start.
Live timing http://superformula.racelive.jp/ in Japanese, but you can recognize non-Japanese drivers by their initials of first names.

Yes. Numbers/Drivers/Teams http://superformula....e/2016/entrant/
As the LT page says, click the [No.] next to drivers name. Their track positions will turn to red, easier to follow.

Â¥1,000,000 for third place. A couple more of those and he can take Haryanto's seat.

1.39.8 for Vandoorne makes his as quick as McLaren in the GP last year. Alonso did a 1.39.6 & Button did a 1.40.1.

The fastest laps were a bit odd as they seemed to be on the out laps from the pits. The 1st sectors were quick so I think they were just timing from the pit exit line. Fastest laps in the race were in the 1.41s

Still pretty impressive considering they are 400 bhp down on the F1 guys. That's worth atleast 3-4 seconds.

honestly with the speed of these cars...its basically japanese formula 1

these cars would wipe the floor of the current f1 cars with equivalent motors

Well it's not exactly a junior series. More like F1 or IndyCar than GP2 and such.

Yep, finally caught up with it.

Looks good and fast. Great and consistent (those lap times!) by Yamamoto. But those pitstop seemed all pretty chaotic, failling front jacks, loose wheels. Also, apparently no tyre deg on those Yokohama tyres.

And there's really a Belgian driver called Bertrand Baguette :stoned:

Maybe because they're not looking so much for talent anymore? It's all about connections and/or money.

Besides, as much as I sympathize with the series and like a lot of the drivers there, I can't help feeling that the lineup is a bit of the F1-rejects type. It's an alternative for other top single seater series and attracts mostly those who didn't really get a chance elsewhere - not necessarily because of lack of talent, but we all know you have to be in the right place at the right time for those best opportunities. That's just how it is.

Yes. In 2010 he went to Indycar after winning the WSR title, although his main claim to fame there was leading a few laps of the 2011 Indy 500 on a fuel saving strategy.

Watched the (belated) coverage on Motors TV.  Hmm, fast cars, no overtaking, bit of a bore really.  And how come megastar Stoffel got beaten by a couple of local nobodies?

That's because they're low on horsepower but high on downforce (cornering speed). I would say third place is pretty good for Vandoorne, all things considered.

They already did when the drivers were in junior formulas.  That's why these drivers are now in Super Formula.

Super Formula/Formula Nippon/Japan F3000 was in the late 80's to mid 90's a solid test ground. Money was there for drivers to get paid, so many bolted if not scooped up by an F1 team out of Formula 3.

Let's see: Debut season in an competitive and experienced field with an underpowered car

1st race: podium

2nd race: unlucky in qualifying and race red flagged

3rd race: pole

Not bad....

on a semi-wet track, he was only three tenths quicker than the next driver. i think the gap has to be at least three seconds, to deserve a chance in F1.
