A bit of pre-season fun. You are entering F1 with your team in 2017. You must employ your two drivers, your third/test driver, your team principal/manager and your chief technical director. You can not employ anyone who is already contracted to another team. Team name is optional.

Your budget is that of a mid-field team, so you will probably need one good driver and a 'pay' driver.

What do you mean by "already contracted"? Do you mean someone who has a contract for 2016 or someone who has a contract for 2017?

Let's see, my drivers would be Robin Frijns and Robert Wickens, two former FR3.5 champions, who would really deserve to be in F1 in my opinion.

My third driver would be someone with big money.

I'd choose Giacomo Ricci for the team manager role, I'm impressed by the work he's done at Trident.

And I would try my best to steal James Key from Faenza.  :p

Contract for 2016.

If I'd had my own team back in 2013, my team name and drivers would have been:

Team: New Wave Racing (livery: purple and green)

D1: Robin Frijns

D2: Mitch Evans/Antonio Felix da Costa

R1: Felix Rosenqvist

Take out Rosenqvist and put Mitch or da Costa in reserve and it gets my vote. Except maybe the livery!

1st driver: Jean-Eric Vergne
You need someone with relatively recent F1 experience and he's got pace, he was almost as good as Ricciardo.

2nd driver: Sergey Sirotkin
Clearly loaded with cash and genuinely mildly promising.

3rd driver: Arthur Pic
3rd drivers are largely irrelevant these days, you can just grab the largest bag of cash possible and have a driver that's at least mildly competent and won't bin the car if he actually gets to drive it.

Team principal: Stefano Domenicali
I'm not sure he did a good job at Ferrari, but having Ferrari experience clearly is a plus.

Technical director: Mike Coughlan
Stefano's too nice, you need a bastard to compensate. Also has experience at the top end in F1.

Team name: ART Grand Prix

D1: Stoffel Vandoorne

D2: Nobuharu Matsushita (reasonably talented, plus Honda sponsorship money).

T1: Esteban Ocon

Principal: Federic Vasseur

(This has a serious undertone, I think that ART could actually make the jump to F1 in a successful manner).

That would be quite a decent team, indeed. However, you would have to pry Vasseur from Renault's team after just one season. ;)

Team Name:  Team Sky Professional Racing Team

Livery: See my post in the Fantasy livery thread.

Team Principal: Ross Brawn

Chief Designer: Mike Coughlan

Driver 1: Paul di Resta

Driver 2: Will Stevens

Test Driver: Sam Bird

Keeps with the Pro Cycling Team's ethos of endorsing British talent.  Di Resta provides 'experience' and Wiggins like moaning with Stevens bringing in some sponsorship.  Ross Brawn could be the inspiration coming dramatically out of retirement to work alongside Mike Coughlan who designs a stomping mid-grid car powered by the returning Ford's engines which are moderately faster than a clapped out Renault.

TEAM DISCOVERY CHANNEL!!!

I'll hire Ralf Schumacher. Sergey Sirotkin and Jimmy Eriksson. 3rd driver will be Beitske Visser or some rich guy. Team Principal? PASTOR MALDONADO and no clue for the rest.

I AM THE WINNER!!!

I know, but since ART is Vasseur's project and I genuinely dislike Nicolas Todt, I was hoping he could jump ship after one season

Mazda F1

Driver 1: Jean-Éric Vergne, as fast as DR, probably has a reasonably sized cheque as well.

Driver 2: Tatiana Calderon, clearly showing signs of potential, would be sponsor friendly.

Reserve: Alfonso Celis and a Carlos Sim cheque

TP: Sabine Schmitz

Season one will be an amazing breakthrough for Mazda F1, winning on its first 5 outings. In fact the team will be a shoe in for the title until its discovered my designers have in fact hidden a rotary Wankel engine and we are thrown out.

Livery will be an updated version of this horror beauty:

I'm thinking Donald Trump for manager just for the interviews.

Jim Clark driving both cars. He'd swap over at half distance and still come first and second.

Hold on, not sure  Mr Trumps "hair" could withstand a champagne  soaking, might be some weird chemical reaction.  We'd have to send my chief engineer up there, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The guy named after the University, so he must be clever.

Great to see so many people picking Robin Frijns as one of the drivers... Says enough... Just a massive big shame F1 does not show interest in him, because he has no budget bringing in. It's one of the biggest shames by F1 of the last few years in my opinion ...

My drivers will be

- Robin Frijns (definitely !)
- Stoffel Vandoorne

Test driver: Sam Bird
Junior driver : Charles Leclerk

That is the big mistery. Frijns is obviously a huge talent. Kvyat, Sainz jr., Vandoorne, Bianchi, Magnussen... Frijns beated them all. Later these drivers were praised for their talent. I can't believe that there are no teams that want to take the chance to sign Frijns. Yes he does not have the financial backing, but he is cheap to sign, and he will pay back in results, and could be sold for good money to bigger teams. Probably such investments are to risky in nowadays F1 in crisis.

Hopefully Frijns get's a chance in Indycars, were he can show what a big mistake F1 has made to ignore his talent.

Afterburner Autosport

Scott Dixon
Jean-Eric Vergne
Pipo Derani

I'd operate as team principal and pay Ross Brawn and Roger Penske for consultations; probably cheaper than hiring either of them and I learn something in the process. If I'm not running the team out of my excess Powerball winnings, I'd run the car and team with a 'Trump 2016' livery or a 'Bloomberg 2016' livery for a year in exchange for at least $350 million (I figure that'll be enough to get me near the upper midfield without causing me to dig into my own pocket very much). In an ideal world we find the new double-diffuser, do a Brawn GP, and then disappear until election season 2020.

Honestly, though, I'd rather run in Indycar, IMSA, or the WEC. The atmosphere is more genuine and you get a lot more for your buck (without having to shell out to attention-hungry bazillionaires). Maybe persuade Honda to give the LM24 a shot now that they've won Daytona...
