Sauber's 2016 challenger will make its late debut in this test. We'll also see a first glimpse of the current pecking order: Can Ferrari challenge Mercedes? Who will be best of the rest? What can McLaren do? And how strong are Manor and Haas really? It is the last test before the season start in Melbourne. Let's go.

Some "tyre corrected" lap times. I simply assumed that there is a 0,75s dífference between each compound and calculated a lap time on ultra softs.

FI 1:22,3

Mercedes 1:22,6

Ferrari 1:22,8

STR 1:23,1

RB 1:23,5

Sauber (2015) 1:23,7

Renault 1:23,7

Haas 1:24,0

Williams 1:24,1

Manor 1:24,4

McLaren 1:24,5

All this really shows is that we probably don't have a clue who is really fast? I'm expecting Mercedes to be able to do a 1:21,0 just based on Sauber's lap time.

To give teams transport time? As the last test only finished Thursday... ?

Hadn't even realised the 2nd test would already be this week! Testing this year is practically 1 long test of 8 days, there is very little you can do between Thursday and Tuesday.

I know they draw the cost saving card every time the see fit but they are also constantly talking about safety. To me, to go racing with prototype machines with nearly no testing is dangerous. Yes, most teams have experience with building F1 cars but the cars are still brand new and teams have just 8 days (or in Sauber's case just 4 days) to make sure those prototypes don't fall apart.

Drivers practically just have 4 days to get to grips with their new car, that's if the car doesn't break down otherwise it'll be even less. In case of the rookies, they also just have 4 days of testing but not only to getting to grips with their new car but also getting to grips with a Formula 1 car in general.

I think the testing restrictions have gone too far, they constantly talk about developing technology but yet they don't really have the time to properly test this newly developed technology and put their drivers in a so to speak untested car.

I know I'm exaggerating a bit but if you look at it from this perspective I find it a bit hypocritical to hear them constantly talking about safety.

It's a pity they didn't give the reserve drivers a chance to drive the cars on the 5th day.

No Renault sounds?

Watching and hearing the Ferrari and Merc on track together was fun, but the Merc looks utterly dominant while the Ferrari is on the ragged edge.

Honda sounds like a motorcycle!

I agree, it is like firing any manned spacecraft without ever testing it.

A glorified testing season like McLaren had, should never happen again. They spend upwards of 2-300 million for nothing, while 10-20m worth of testing would have hammered out most gremlins and it would be near the front. I'm no McLaren fan, but I find it hard to see a former opponent in such bitter times.

The other one, Williams, have not won a race since 2005. Yes, the planets aligned in 2012, but other than that, that is quite bleak for a team owning the nineties.

On my way to Barcelona as we speak.

Hoping Hamilton shares Day 2 with Seb so that me and my girlfriend (Vettel fan) can spend Tuesday being touristy and then see both of our drivers on the same day

Agreed completely.

I also hadn't realised the 2nd week of testing was this week already. Bit weird that they do 2 consecutive weeks. So if you find a major issue with your car the first week.. you've got pretty much one weekend to sort it out? It's ridiculous.

Well considering the cars (and teams) need to be in Australia on March 16th you do  need some time after the cars testing to get them back in the factories, rebuild them and ship them off. The schedule gives them what? 11 days ... I doubt they could have run a second test much later.

Test Two ready. Dany and Daniel to alternate Test days in Barcelona. More 1f449.pnghttp://win.gs/T2DKDR  #F1Testing

And like at last week's first test, both of our drivers will take two days at the wheel of the RB12. Dany will jump in the car first on Tuesday 1st and then on Thursday 3rd March before Daniel takes the wheel for the Wednesday 2nd and Friday 4th of the second four day test in Barcelona.

They could've started earlier. Testing started unusually late this year, for example I just checked it out and last year they were at Jerez for the first week of testing in the 1st of February. The reason it doesn't feel like it, is because the season ended very late in 2015 with some extremely late race weekends.

This test (1st-4th March) was initially scheduled as the 1st test, with the 2nd planned to be held 15-18th March. When they rearranged the 1st race then they had to shift that test, but as teams were already planning to have cars ready for 1st March they moved the 1st test as close to that as possible to give teams a chance to still be ready, still wasn't enough for Sauber but the rest made it.

Anyway luckily this test kept the same dates (except for being test 2 instead of test 1) as I had it all booked by July :p

I 'm pretty sure the argument against earlier was the wasted tests run in too cold for useful f1 testing in  the past. And I think they didn't want to spring for airfreight to go testing in the middle east where the weather is generally ok in early february.

Plus don't forget, the central idea was to compress the F1 calendar ... Australia was originally supposed to be at the last weekend in March, moving Australia forward meant compressing testing.

nothing wrong with the tests being back to back, the cars are pretty reliable this year, even the new team, and it means we don't have too long to wait between both.

Nice that it ends on Friday too this week, so it will be great start to the weekend on the mIRC channel.
