The British Racing Drivers’ Club will continue to lend its support and play an active role in the championship, which will run alongside British GT for seven of its eight rounds in 2016, effectively restoring the traditional F3/GT package that ran successfully on UK circuits for so many years. As a National F3 Championship, BRDC British Formula 3 will also offer FIA Super Licence points for the top five drivers in the overall standings.

The current grid outnumbers that of European F3 as well, with 23 drivers confirmed for the first round this weekend.

What are the attendances like for British GT racing these days?

A sensible move, fitting with the FIA's wish to see national F3 series just slightly below their one.

Frees up the F4 name to move to MSA Formula which is actually F4 in all but name.

So will budgets increase to replicate F3 costs too? What a stupid story. They are NOT F3 cars.

Not spectacular. Certainly nowhere near as good as the BTCC, but I guess that's partly to do with a lack of live TV coverage on a channel everyone can get as much as anything.

I said that the MSA and Palmer should swap the F3/F4 names as soon as this series planned to position themselves in the old British F3 market. This puts an end to the confusion of having an FIA F4 series that is not allowed to call itself Formula 4, a series called Formula 4 that is not actually Formula 4 trying to be Formula 3, and the former Formula 3 series being defunct in the United Kingdom.

I wonder how this works with the recent FIA changes to Formula 3 regulations, requiring the compliance with current F3 technical regulations and open competition for any series calling themselves Formula 3. Is the new British F3 car compliant with FIA F3? Or have the FIA waived the rules to allow national F3 to re-establish itself in the UK?

The autosport story on this explains most of it.

Budgets are significantly less than FIA F3, the move has been approved by FIA. Technically the cars are quite close to F3 specs and lapping within 0.4 of previous British F3 times at Snetterton

Best not to think about it.

Yea, was gonna say, this sets up Euro F3 to be a proper 'step up' over British F3 rather than an alternative.

I think this actually great news for British Motorsport, Palmer has genuinely done a top job with F4 now F3

It's a really cool little series, but it's not in any way "Formula 3"

And it was what, 2 years ago?, that the FIA wanted Euro Open F3 renamed because while they were F3 chassis and engines, there were too many spec parts to qualify for Formula 3 status(paraphrased).

So it has qualified for super license points because it changed its name? What BS
