It falls to me to pass on some extremely sad news. Yesterday Monday 28th March 2016. Gilles4Ever passed away. His wife Pat asked me to let you all know.

Not many will know but Gavin was suffering from a condition called Spinocerebellar Ataxia, a hereditary degenerative disease affecting motor functions. Gavin told us that the loss of fine motor skills had become especially pronounced in the last couple of years. Movement, speech, eyesight and even typing were becoming increasingly difficult.

As you can see, despite this, Gavin was an extremely active member, moderator and friend to this forum who's input will be sorely missed. As a friend for many years, his passing will leave a large hole in my heart as I am sure it will be for all of us.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Pat and his family at this difficult time.

Sorry to hear this news. Can't say that I knew him personally but, as you say, he was active here and I enjoyed reading his posts.

Condolences to his family. :(

RIP Gilles. I've always enjoyed his contributions here and in the Paddock Club: a reliable, deeply honest and good-humoured poster. Can only imagine how much his friends and family will miss him. :(

He also sets an astonishing example for the other mods to follow.

Many condolences.

Awful news. I will miss his knowledge and fairness and someone who seemed to be an all around good guy. My condolences to those he leaves behind.

Very saddened and shocked by this. A kind and decent man who cared very deeply about motorsport and about this board. He was supportive to me and to all the mods here and I'll miss him a lot.

There's going to be times where stuff happens to the teams and drivers we both enjoyed where I'm going to think 'Oh I must PM G about this' and then I'll remember.  :(

No, no, no, no :(

I didn't really knew him personally either, but I enjoyed his posts and contributions on this board and the conversations with him on the live chat.

I didn't knew about it. Just a week ago he was joking (at least I thought so back then) on IRC that he is typing too slow after someone was for once faster than him. He wasn't joking :(

Condolences to his family, especially to his wife.

RIP Gee :(

That's very sad to hear. Forum readers owes him a debt of gratitude for his hard work and dedication; he was certainly the most active moderator I've known in the history of AtlasF1. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Incredibly sad news, I only knew him from his dry comments on the IRC sessions, but his participation was always so apposite.  His courage in dealing with this terrible problem is humbling.

I'll miss him a lot.

Horrible news :( Didnt know much of Gavin personally, but chatted to him regularly in IRC. Winding him up about Massa was the most interesting part of a GP weekend :-(

Thoughts with his family and friends :(

We will all miss Gilles4Ever because of his genial easy manner. None of us knew about his condition until earlier this year even though it has been affecting him for years. And still he was always here on the front line making sure things ran smoothly and not showing any signs of the problems which would take him away from us. He put on an incredibly brave face and we didn't know.

He was part of what made this place and I'm going to miss him. I feel sad about this despite only knowing him through this site, so I can't imagine how it must be for his family and friends. My thoughts are with them.

Speaking entirely selfishly, he made my life as a mod very easy indeed. But as a poster and for the forum, it is a huge loss. G4E was clearly as sharp as ever until the very end. My condolences to his family and his many friends here.

That being said, this is nothing compared to what his friends and loved ones must be feeeling. My condoleances to all of them.

I'm shocked and saddened by this news. Like others I didn't know him that well but he was such a superb and knowledgeable mod that always dealt with things fairly. It was only the previous weekend I was chatting with him along with many others in live chat about moto gp and he was still as sharp as ever. It will be so weird not to see him posting in the Bike topic among others with the latest news. He will be missed greatly by the whole community and my thoughts will go out to his family and friends in this incredibly hard time. :(

Thanks to Slarti for posting a like in the Paddock Club to this. I can only echo my earlier thoughts in the PC; If one's life can be judged by the friends they leave behind then Gilles4Ever has left quite a legacy. I will miss him.

Even i didnt know him personally i always enjoyed his contributions and he was a very fair moderator. Ive been here since the atlasf1 days and remeber him.
Was always present in the gigantic mclaren threads and helped in keeping them clean, and my god that must have been a struggle.
My Deepest Condolences to his family and friends. All the best to them in this difficult time. What a loss!
I dont know how it works, but if autosport plans to send something for the family, funereal ill happily donate

I hadn't interacted with Gilles4Ever in ages, mostly on account of my moderate inactivity here, but I remember talking to him a bit years ago and he really did seem to be a very down to earth, friendly, and sincere guy. He was a big part of these forums and things will probably feel a little emptier now that such a prominent member, and all around good guy, has left us. Best wishes to his family and friends, they're surely going through a lot.

Saddened and shocked to hear this news, G4E was one of the people who made this place. So knowledgeable and easy going, I shall miss his input dearly. RIP Gavin, my sincerest condolences to his family, friends and others who knew him on a personal level far more than I did. Ciao Gilles, I shall miss you.

Gavin will be a big loss to the forum, not just as a moderator but as a great contributor and a decent human being . It is the mark of the man that nobody even knew until recently that he was even ill.

RIP Gavin, my condolences to his family and friends.

What a sad situation. :(

Gavin was undoubtedly a pillar of this curious fellowship of motorsport fanatics.

His enthusiasm and contributions helped shape this community in profound ways - and will be missed by all.

I hope his wife finds the support she wants and needs in these difficult times.

Just the other day my friend was on my computer snooping at my posts and I told her not to post anything silly otherwise Gilles4Ever would see it. I can't believe it. I never knew him by name and only through the forums, but he seemed a thoroughly lovely person. RIP.

Saddened to hear this :(

From the interactions we had, Gavin came across as a really nice guy. I've been a little inactive on here in recent years - I've mostly spending my time in the bike threads, but he was a regular poster in there so I got to converse with him fairly regularly.

These forums will be worse off without him. My thoughts are with his friends and family.
