RIP Gilles4Ever (Updated 23/05/2016)

Not many will know but Gavin was suffering from a condition called Spinocerebellar Ataxia, a hereditary degenerative disease affecting motor functions. Gavin told us that the loss of fine motor skills had become especially pronounced in the last couple of years. Movement, speech, eyesight and even typing were becoming increasingly difficult.
As you can see, despite this, Gavin was an extremely active member, moderator and friend to this forum who's input will be sorely missed. As a friend for many years, his passing will leave a large hole in my heart as I am sure it will be for all of us.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Pat and his family at this difficult time.

RIP Gilles. I've always enjoyed his contributions here and in the Paddock Club: a reliable, deeply honest and good-humoured poster. Can only imagine how much his friends and family will miss him.
He also sets an astonishing example for the other mods to follow.
Many condolences.

Very saddened and shocked by this. A kind and decent man who cared very deeply about motorsport and about this board. He was supportive to me and to all the mods here and I'll miss him a lot.
There's going to be times where stuff happens to the teams and drivers we both enjoyed where I'm going to think 'Oh I must PM G about this' and then I'll remember.

I didn't really knew him personally either, but I enjoyed his posts and contributions on this board and the conversations with him on the live chat.
I didn't knew about it. Just a week ago he was joking (at least I thought so back then) on IRC that he is typing too slow after someone was for once faster than him. He wasn't joking

Condolences to his family, especially to his wife.

That's very sad to hear. Forum readers owes him a debt of gratitude for his hard work and dedication; he was certainly the most active moderator I've known in the history of AtlasF1. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Incredibly sad news, I only knew him from his dry comments on the IRC sessions, but his participation was always so apposite. His courage in dealing with this terrible problem is humbling.
I'll miss him a lot.

Horrible news Didnt know much of Gavin personally, but chatted to him regularly in IRC. Winding him up about Massa was the most interesting part of a GP weekend :-(

Speaking entirely selfishly, he made my life as a mod very easy indeed. But as a poster and for the forum, it is a huge loss. G4E was clearly as sharp as ever until the very end. My condolences to his family and his many friends here.

Absolutely heartbreaking news. He has been a cornerstone of this forum and the irc channel for so long. Always calm, sensible, friendly and humourous. Rarely has someone suffered so many fools so gladly.

Was always present in the gigantic mclaren threads and helped in keeping them clean, and my god that must have been a struggle.
My Deepest Condolences to his family and friends. All the best to them in this difficult time. What a loss!
I dont know how it works, but if autosport plans to send something for the family, funereal ill happily donate

I hadn't interacted with Gilles4Ever in ages, mostly on account of my moderate inactivity here, but I remember talking to him a bit years ago and he really did seem to be a very down to earth, friendly, and sincere guy. He was a big part of these forums and things will probably feel a little emptier now that such a prominent member, and all around good guy, has left us. Best wishes to his family and friends, they're surely going through a lot.

Gavin will be a big loss to the forum, not just as a moderator but as a great contributor and a decent human being . It is the mark of the man that nobody even knew until recently that he was even ill.
RIP Gavin, my condolences to his family and friends.

What a sad situation.
Gavin was undoubtedly a pillar of this curious fellowship of motorsport fanatics.
His enthusiasm and contributions helped shape this community in profound ways - and will be missed by all.
I hope his wife finds the support she wants and needs in these difficult times.

Saddened to hear this
From the interactions we had, Gavin came across as a really nice guy. I've been a little inactive on here in recent years - I've mostly spending my time in the bike threads, but he was a regular poster in there so I got to converse with him fairly regularly.
These forums will be worse off without him. My thoughts are with his friends and family.
